I like to talk/write a lot. I think what I've already written should be sufficient cursory information for anyone skimming this profile...however, if you'd like some further musings, I'll paste stuff from myspace account:
If you're going to read "about me," I figure you might as well gain something from it. Thus, before regaling you with tales showcasing my wit and self-effacing humor, I'll reward you for your efforts by passing along my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe. Trust me, these things are sweet!
Combine 1 cup sugar, 1cup brown sugar and 1 cup REAL butter (face it, we're making cookies, margarine can't help you now!). Add 2 eggs and mix well. Then add in 1 teaspoon vanilla, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder. You should probably have a little taste now, just to be sure. Continue to mix and slowly add 2 ½ cups of flour, a pinch of salt, and 1 cup ground oatmeal. Grinding the oatmeal is key!
And now for the important part: stir in 12 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate chips! Take as many bite-sized-totally-not-unh
ealthy tastes as possible. If you want fresh cookies, bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes.
Now, about me:
1) My general punctuation of preference is the exclamation point. (!)
2) I want to believe that the hokey pokey is, indeed, what it's all about. I vacillate between this lighthearted attitude and a more serious outlook motivated by a desire to do something good with all the priviledge I've had in my life. It's extremely important for me to give something back.
3) People fascinate me. I always wonder how people became who they are...genetics? culture? Too many or not enough popsicles as a child? I suppose I AM a dorky PSYCH major at heart!
4) I'm a stickler for statistics; you will impress me if you have a firm grasp of the difference between correlation and causation.
5) A friend once said I was the happiest non-religous person he'd ever met.
6) Although most who know me would describe me as HAPPY, energetic, and easily amused, I also have a serious side...if you start singing a Disney song, I will most certainly join in (and perhaps even correct you on the lyrics), but then we may get in a 5-hour long conversation about the use of gender-specific language in Mulan versus Snow White.
7) In the past 2 years, vocations I've considered seriously include: PhD in Developmental or Clinical Psychology, occupational therapist for developmentally disabled kids, nonprofit work with a global focus, high school health teacher, writer/editor, college admissions counselor. I have no idea what i'll become but I love my job at Bridges (www.bridgesweb.org), helping to connect kids across cultures.
8) Did I mention I love cookies?
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Before Sunrise, Murderball (Quad Rugby Documentary), In America, A Goofy Movie, What About Bob?, Born into Brothels, Rainman, Philidelphia, the Shawshank Redemption, Before Sunset, Zoolander, Rabbit Proof Fence, Office Space, Junebug, Finding Nemo
Music is such a mood-dependent thing for me; the music that at one time delights me would disgust me at anothe rmoment. I've been known to listen to old school Janet Jackson, Garden State soundtrack, Gypsy Kings, Ray LaMontagne, Stevie Ray Vaugn, Guster, pop country, Louis Armstrong, REM, Elton John, Ray Charles, Jack Johnson, and this awesome group from Austin, TX called "The Hudsons."
I HATE commercials and thus rarely watch TV, but (thanks to DVDs) I do have to give a HUGE shout-out to the "Daily Show with Jon Stewart, " "The West Wing, " "House MD, " and BBC's "The Office."
Recent fave author is Jonathan Safran Foer..."Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" was amazing, I'd highly recommend it to anyone fascinated by humans and how we deal with the crazy world around us. One of my other favorite authors is a neurologist: Oliver Sacks (he wrote, "The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat"). I also love most books by Tom Robbins (especially, "Even Cowgirls get the Blues"), Bill Bryson, Tolstoy's "Irrational Man, " The Giving Tree, The Death of Ivan Ilych, "Man's Search for Meaning" by Victor Frankl, Empire Falls, The Uninvited Guest, The Songlines (Bruce Chatwin), "As Nature made him: the boy who was raised as a girl."
I like to either be extremely active and productive (running, playing soccer, swing dancing, working) or totally chill out (reading, watching documentary films, etc). I spend most of my free time seeing friends/family, swing dancing, running, reading, and doing little artistic/organizational projects like backing up all my pictures/video.
In short: I'm interested in people. In long: I love going to the kids' section of book stores and am fascinated by human development. I used to work in a school for developmentally disabled children and I sometimes miss that. Lately I've become very , liberal arts education), I also have to add that I am interested in the little things like baking cookies and going to the grocery store. I also really like swimming in the lake and eating toast.
