Nathan Curry

Christian / Indie / Pop

Louisville, KY

About

Catchy and repetitive choruses, deep, thoughtful lyrics, and a desire to reach the world through music are just a few of the traits that have helped sculpt Nathan Curry into the artist that he is today.

Hailing from Louisville, Kentucky, this eighteen year-old singer/songwriter is very familiar and at ease with the music world.

"Music is something that has always been in my blood. Even from the time I was a little boy, I was surrounded by it. My grandmother could play piano and my parents had really nice voices. It's just something that has always been there."

Despite growing up around music, Curry confesses that he wasn't really into it at first.

"Art was my love. I was an artist. I would always be drawing and creating things. I liked music and I sang a lot around the house and occasionally in church, but I never saw it as a true career."

Curry remembers the first time he decided to take singing seriously.

"I was at church camp one summer. 2002. I was hanging around outside, just humming to myself. And then, for no real reason, I started singing "Let Me Call You Sweetheart." Some of my friends came up to me and said "Wow! You can really sing. I had no idea!" It was that moment right there that gave me a new confidence. I knew at that point that music was something I absolutely had to be a part of."

Growing up in the church also strengthened his desire to communicate with a lost and hurting world.

"I grew up in the church and was saved when I was eight years old. I always loved the old hymns and songs that we sang in church, but I always saw it as good music with a fun sound. I never saw it as a tool that could be used to influence an entire world. It wasn't until I went caroling one Christmas that this truth made itself evident to me. My church and I went around the neighborhood singing to several of the senior adults in our church who were too weak and frail to attend. Seeing the smiles on their faces is a picture that is always in my mind. The tears that fell due to the everlasting promise of peace on earth and good will torward men. I then realized that music was not just a bunch of words with a fun and catchy tune. It was a way to communicate with others. To express true kindness, love, and understanding. The same kindness, love, and understanding that our Lord offers to us. My entire world opened up and the future looked much brighter from that point on."

Now, seven years, two choir tours, dozens of music competitions, and three garage bands later, Curry has taken his love for music, mixed it with his desire to create, and in the process has produced a unique sound that is not only pleasing to the ear, but to the soul as well.

"It's not the instruments that make music beautiful. It's the words. The words that come from your heart. The words that have the powerful ability to change the entire world. That is the kind of music I desire to make. If I can't do that, then I'm simply wasting my time as an artist."

"I can't tolerate music that is (as I like to put it) "surface art." Music that doesn't make a person think about their lives or the way in which they live. Music that has no heart, foundation, or philosophy to it. I can't stand that kind of music. I'm challenged to make music that digs down past the surface, reaches down the throats of the listeners, pulls out their hearts, and lets them carefully examine their souls and what they can do to improve them."

Curry is currently working on a short demo and is planning to move to Nashville, where he hopes to disperse his gift of love and charity through his music.

"Music is not what shapes our lives. It's love and an understanding of the soul and all the trials that a man's soul can go through. Well, my Lord has been through those trials and He came out on top. I'm simply here to tell you that you can do the same. My hope and prayer is that people can listen to my music and in the process grow closer to God and begin to understand and witness His consistent and unchanging love for them."
