To tide You over, here is a construction practice of a Bugs Bunny Comic Cover:

Here is the construction compared with the original:

This is my first construction study, by eye, drawn from my monitor. It is very messy, a lot of editing, and the Bugs character is too short. The bear character has the best structure, but still there are miscalculations. I will try something easier next time. The challenge was definitely there and this exercise taught me a lot about 'looking'. I also learned Bugs Bunny is deceptively difficult to draw on your first go.

Just a reminder of what an actual Musk Ox looks like.

I recently read a blog post by John K here: http://johnkstuff.blogspot.com/2007/02/being-enslaved-to-someone-elses-style.html
about being a slave to someone else's style. He names T.S. Sullivant, widely recognized as the father of cartooning, (citation: http://www.animationarchive.org/2007/03/biography-father-of-cartooning-t-s.html) as the source from which Disney emulated, to which most cartoonists and animators emulate. John K celebrates Sullivant, who actually went and practiced observing the real animal, chose elements that seemed not only visually interesting, but what could best express emotion.

John K then continues on about how the practice of animation is devolving into copying style from 4th, 5th, 6th generation of a copy of Sullivant's cats, for instance. OR 2nd, 3rd generation copies of Disney's deer or bunnies. I can see his point and now look to my own design of the musk ox.

Perhaps I am having problems designing my Musk Ox not only because my animal anatomy needs practice, but there was also no 'Disney blueprint'. So I post now what a real musk ox looks like. I will find what on the animal is visually interesting, and continue from there.

Some points: The animal's fur is the most expressive part of the animal to me, yet what I'm having most difficulties expressing. I've been falling into the trap of attempting to render each individual strand of fur. I ask, how can I convey the fluffiness AND the wonders of the turbulence in the direction of fur strands around the body while keeping it simple, drawn with energy?

The first one that came to mind was the zookeeper, who used to be a hunter, but in his old age finds hunting the animal alive to be more suitable. Well, more economical really because he can pull funds from the zoo, not his own purse, to execute the 'hunt' so to speak.
