About

The A.A.A.L.I.S

African American Ancestral Legacy Initiative Savannah

Is dedicated to the enrichment of the cultural/historical legacies of Savannah and the coastal region with frontal dramatic, musical, choreographic and oratorical presentations. We intend to build broader coalitions with other institutions, programs and everyday people that have a common interest in developing both historically and demographically appropriate monuments, shrines, promotions and arts.
Our aim is to inspire the accelerated development of such programs. We expect a rapid increase in the rate of like events which heretofore have been absent, dormant or slow to emerge. We also expect to shore-up the diffusive fragmentation which has added to sluggish progress in this area.
This is an empowerment and entitlement based philosophy that highlights the shrouded legacies of Sea Island , coastal, and Gullah-Geechee people. The A.A.A.L.I.S. has already begun to present costumed enactments that are enriched with highly researched documentation. The figures portrayed include: Equiano; Quamino; Stono Rebels; Aaron Bradley; Hugh Bryan; Black Red Coats; Black Confederates; African Kings and others.

Our goal is to remove the distinction of African legacies as footnoted, supplemental or segregated material. The history is deserving of a front and center treatment that will serve to edify all citizens. We advocate something different than a fun fact, composite or aside. We support African American history as important, valuable, fundamental and essential. A focus on that heritage supports a community of truth rather than one of compliance.

A.A.A.L.I.S. was created and developed by Artistic director, composer, writer, conceptualist David Pleasant with founding partners Art director - Pleasant; Music director, composer, dramaturge - Gary Swindell.
