I think this song started from an argument my girlfriend and I had about that band "The Pains of Being Pure at Heart." My explanation was that I was no longer 15, and had no use for such empty pop (in fact, even when I was 15 I wanted something more), and that they were only successful because they did a good job stealing all the twee cliches and repackaging them as something new and hip, when in reality, people liked it because they wanted that warm nostalgic feeling of being a kid again.
This song is about marketing, about using psychology for evil and trying to sell us fake feelings of comfort instead of helping us address why we have those feelings in the first place. It's about how much I hate money and how badly I want everyone to feel free and alive.
now they're selling our youth back to us at a profit
it's happening now, though I think we can stop it if we'd all just realize
it's not the toys or the songs or the trends we miss
so much as the hope that was in our eyes
still we're jamming this junk in our every orrafice
hoping it heals, seeking something with sustenance
but it just bores us and clogs all our pores
and we feel so forlorn that we neglect our chores
'cause we keep wanting moremoremoremore
'til we're so sore that we can't afford to ignore any more...
see there's no magic cure that's ever going to save us
we may get a little worried but that's how they raised us
all sorts of people scared silly but they dont mean to shame us
we're not embarrassed anymore and no you can't make us
and we wont let these advertised lies enslave us
we are pro-bono custodians, no you dont have to pay us
so lets all show them just what were made of
cuz we aint never had nothin to be afraid of
