aKido is the electronic rock band and pseudonym of Kim Gaboury. The Montreal-based composer and guitarist began this studio project in 2004 after four years away from music and finding no joy in a desktop publishing career. The young musician first caught the public's attention with his self-released demo e.p. 'PLAYTIME', a collection of eight tracks recorded between 1998 and 2003. The groundbreaking digital animation video 'Les Humains' won multiple awards around the world and 'PLAYTIME' made the top 20 for college radio RPG airplays accross Canada (Earshot Mag). The latest e.p. is titled 'BLINK', and is available on Nordique Records. 'Dancing in Chains', the first single off 'BLINK' made history as the highest charting instrumental song ever in CBC Radio 3's prestigious top 30, peaking at number 3. Kim assembles a live band to tour with, featuring Joyce Vallus on sampler and vocals, Martin Gaboury on drums and Serge Nakauchi Pelletier (from Pawa up First) on bass.
"The music of 'BLINK' raves without lapsing into out-of-control mayhem, and its elegance is bolstered by the inclusion of Joyce Vallus's silky vocals. Also distinguishing the music is the fact that Gaboury composes songs, not tracks, so that electronic pop pieces like "Cause Celebre", for example, impress as studiously arranged and sequenced wholes. Songs repeatedly take surprising twists and turns. Symphonic electronic pop, shoegaze guitar riffing, traces of drum'n'bass and acid all lurk in there." (textura.org)
"As much swirling, moody gothic pop new-wave as electronic experimentation, aKido seems hooked on classics and moves through the past in a most contemporary way." (Nightlife Magazine)
"......the whole concert was mesmerizing. The music was melodic, rhythmic, electronic, upbeat, piercing, rocking and bittersweet, all at once..." The music tells a story but you are your own interpreter. There is almost no words, and the existing words are merely suggestions. Joyce Vallus' exquisite voice enters and pushes the dream sequence a little further and reminds you that life was still pretty..." (33mag.com)

"We all admire the spangled acrobat with classical grace meticulously walking his tight rope in the talcum light; but how much rarer art there is in the sagging rope expert wearing scarecrow clothes and impersonating a grotesque drunk! I should know." (Vladimir Nabokov) Thank you for your friendship! Musical greetings from Munich/Germany!
