'a98 - solar wind / binary star ep' reviewed on ivibes.nu

Anssi Hohti is reviving the A98 alias with this two track EP as Finity Recordings is demonstrating yet more of the trance which is emerging from Finnish producers at the moment...
:: A98 - Solar Wind / Binary Star
:: Finity Digital
:: FTYD006

1) Solar Wind
'Solar Wind' is one of those flowing kind of tracks with the unrelenting rolling basses and rhythmic synths that push a production onwards. There's also light and airy synth presence which really smooths out the top end of the production and adds in the right amount of trancey feel. Carrying on with the smooth and flowing feel, a new lead is introduced - a high pitched, clear sounding instrument, which draws out a long and winding melody which follows a good path of progression and due to just the right amount of reverb, it blends really well with the surrounding sound. What you get is one of those decent tracks where a quick flick through is not enough to appreciate it, but a full listen will engross you as it takes you on its journey.

2) Binary Star
'Binary Star' is quite different to 'Solar Wind'. It employs a bassline with a quirky rhythm which is in a pretty psy-trancey kind of style. Crecendos of synth, sumptuous pads and a jittering chord progression are thrown into the mix to provide a wholesome and uplifting experience. The breakdown is filled with melodious synthlines and the whole thing culminates in a rich bed of melodic synth which goes on to lead the track in a wandering pattern of uplifting melody, backed by some especially wonderfully crafted pads. Quite the track of two halves really - once you get over the interesting blend of synth and bass styles, the track comes to life after the breakdown to provide you with some really quite pleasant sounds.

Conclusion:
More goodness from Finity's digital label here. It's good to see A98 back with a pair of decent tracks, and not being afraid to try something different either.

Finity Recordings is an electronic dance label founded in May 2005, featuring cutting edge trance and progressive. Finity focuses on looking for fresh trance & dance music, and the label mainly aims to help the up and coming Finnish trance talents to pave their way into the international dance music market. One of Finity's most recent releases is a98's "Solar Wind / Binary Star EP".

a98 (Anssi Hohti, or better known as Allende) is a trance and progressive producer from Finland. He's probably most well-known for his remix of Snow Patrol "Open Your Eyes", which has seen an unofficial white label release. Other than that, he has had various releases and remixes on labels such as Deepblue, Subtraxx and Alter Ego.

Solar Wind

The first track off the Solar Wind / Binary Star EP is Solar Wind. Starting off with a solid perc line, the track slowly builds with the addition of FX, a driving bassline, and massive synth pads. The breakdown finally makes an appearance at the 4 minute mark. It hastily introduces a rather smooth and catchy lead pattern, definitely the stand-out feature in this track. A superb chord progression outlined by the bassline and those huge pads compliment the captivating lead. A very accessible and uplifting tune, enjoyable to say the least. Uplifting and melodic fans should be very satisfied with this one.

Binary Star

Binary Star is a bit edgier than its predecessor. Starting off with a crisp perc line, it wastes no time in pulling itself together. The bassline is very driving and is soon followed by a storming acid riff. Melodic hooks and sweeping pads come into play before the breakdown commenses. The lead is rather nice once again, featuring a synthy pluck sequence. The breakdown ends quickly, making room for the rather melodic chorus, consisting of pads, FX, and the lead. Overall a well written production.

Conclusion

Both tracks are more or less solid uplifting tracks and are in my opinion equally as strong. Perhaps not too innovative, but they're certainly enjoyable and will definitely appeal to those inclined towards uplifting, synthy trance. 3.5/5
