About EMPTY

I started DJing in 2003, after a skint friend needed to sell his decks. Having long been interested in Drum and Bass, I soon started to buy large amounts of vinyl from a wide array of labels. I soon found myself torn between two ends of the spectrum, I love the drumfunk styles, from labels like Paradox & Bassbin, but I also have a taste for the darker side of the genre, labels such as Renegade Hardware, Barcode Recordings and Freak. So I divided my loyalty by mixing drumfunk, under the alias EPÈE (pronounced EP-AY), and continued my darkside assaults under my original moniker, EMPTY. Then one night in 2004, after going to see tech-house DJ, James Zabiela, perform an awesome set using Pioneer CDJ1000's and fx units, decided to take the plunge into the digital realm and pack up my vinyl. In 2004, I started producing after being exposed to Cubase SX by my friend and now co-contributor, MYTH. I started stretching out into different genres, most notably breakbeat. Despite attempts to delve deeply into breakbeat, I found himself pushing the bpm of my tracks up and up, until I couldn't resist anymore and was creating my original love Drum and Bass. Originally creating the staple Drum and Bass sound I so often heard on a friday night out, I soon became disheartened with the results. Still torn between both dark and light styles and my love for experimental sounds, my productions soon took on a very progressive state, with long epic intros and simple often melancholy synths or pads played alongside intricate breakwork. A sound I'm still developing today. Now in 2006, I have started to develop my mixing once more, this time with the use of Ableton Live alongside my Technics SL-DZ1200 and Korg Kaoss Pad II. With this technology, i can now remix tracks on-the-fly and add my own loops of pads, breakbeats and synths to compliment mixes or play them live on my keyboard. The thought behind it is still to continue playing Drum and Bass, but try and develop a new and less structured method of mixing, away from norm I witness at clubs most weekends. As yet still something in the making, but definitely something I plan to master.
