Andy Patterson

A Singer-Songwriter from Gateshead, NE England, now living in London. Five years after first journeying south for University, it hasn't quite occured to him why he's still there. Past musical forays include hosting Open Mic Night at the University of Surrey, countless gigs under the name FINe and dANDY and a long time ago, amateur dramatics and Euphonium in a brass band. Now, spending most of his time doing anything but what he should be, he tries to find some moments to write things, then commit them to a format more reliable than his head, which is easier said than done, despite his occasional occupation.

The debut album is almost finished and should be available soon!

New year, New Ideas.

So, 2009-here it is. Time to do some work. New Years Eve is always an interesting night. Everybody is full of hope and their heads full of the changes they are going to make in the year to come. And I have my own. One of them being to finish this collection of songs I'm going to call an album. In fact I'm not just going to call it an album I'm going to call it 'Life is as Short as a Day'.
There. A decision made already. I reckon 3 of the tracks are ready for mastering. another 6 to tinker with and finish. 9 is a nice number. I think. I think by February I need to have achieved a good few things. And I shall. by the summer I want to be holding it in my hand. A finished CD. Of my own, on my own record label. I said this last year of course, but the blind optimism that follows the striking of Big Ben's chimes can only be good for me. And for us in general.

2009. Bring it on.

The Live Conundrum

So live music is what its about. I keep reading this. And indeed, everytime I go to a gig, it inspires me to do more. It makes me want to perform as well. But is it as easy as all that? The number of singer songwriters gigging in London on any on night must be enough to put anyone off. I mean, what do I have that they don't? Would I book me? On my public showing ie the tunes on my site and myspace, maybe not.

So the answer might be to have an acoustic demo CD, or a few tracks on the web, of all the tunes you want to put on your album, but in the form people are going to hear if they book you for a gig. But then what is the point? Do gig-goers not turn up to gigs to hear a different version to the one they can sit at home and listen to on their laptops? I do. And if you need one to get a gig, then where do you do the gig to do the recordings? 'Live in the studio' gigs never have the same feel as a gig with an audience.

To plough on in the same furrow is the direction. However if anyone is reading this, big shot I know, that runs a night in London, or anywhere in the south east, or anywhere in fact and wants to give a gig to a Geordie with a bag of songs, then give me a shout.

Update

The last few weeks have seen a flurry of activity, with Helen Knee singing some Backing Vocals for the song 'Tonight' and Merith Godwin Greer adding some sublime fiddle to 'London Nights', 'Too Much Power' and 'Dance a Waltz at Pelaw'.

Collaboration is a wonderful thing indeed. There should be the fruits of this available to listen to so

The Recording Process and beyond

I set out on the trail of recording my own album. With much support from others, I started out. With a book of songs, a few demos already on disk and a whole load of time without work I began to learn a lot about the songs, their deficiencies and their strong points.

Its all nearly done. Each day brings me to the end of the recording process and the start of the mixing. So many things to do though. So here I am with this collection of songs. What now?

There's so much can be done from the laptop these days. From the recording through the mixing to the releasing and marketing, so why wait for somebody to come along and 'sign' me to their label, for them to then steer me in their direction to their ends with them taking most of what might not be any profits.

But then are any of us in it for the money? So. Self publishing, self distribution. All in one. Doing everything for yourself. There will be mistakes made of course, but that's fine. It will be an experience and one that may just work out.
