About

Aquaboogie is a (for want of a better term) music project of Stuart McDonald, a journeyman ambient practitioner with a love of odd contexts, Chinese pop songs and kraut rock, who operates out of a small room in the back of his house in Wellington, New Zealand.

Over the years I (for I have shifted into the first person now) have worked closely with Group Five and Jet Jaguar, and have gigged with Bevan Smith (forget which incarnation; I think he may have just embarked on his guitar phase), Frey, Panoramica, and Sstimuluss. In theory my career highlight was being on the same lineup as Biosphere, but I was tired and bored and didn't stick around for his set.

In 2006 I scraped together a few tracks and released an album on Angry Rabbit called International Travel. You can listen to the tracks here and, if you like, purchase a copy on the AR website.

Over the years I've puttered about in different places. I had a couple of releases out on the Monotonik label: Woozy Dog and Little Star 'eps'. I also had a kind of single, Intensive Care', on the Kahvi net label. I also did a semi musique concrete work of field recordings for Autres Directions in Music's The Noise and the City compilation in 2004. More recently, Monotonik released an EP of tracks I did with Jet Jaguar, under the name Malty Media.

I'm interested mostly in the idea of recontextualising different sounds to make interesting cultural collisions. While this does sound like a lot of wank, my main aim is to make sounds that go together in a way that makes you go 'hey!'

More field-recording fun

Does anyone read this? Oh well, I'll blather anyway.

The most recent excitement is that I did five weeks in Europe and Japan and came back with a swag of field recordings. So far I've made two proper tracks from what I collated.

The first features field recordings …

Divestment

Last weekend I passed on my old music gear to a young friend. The feeling is something akin to relief. The gear is a sort of who's who of middling ancient synths.

  • Item 1: Yamaha CS-5. Monophonic, 1979. Better model: CS10, CS80.

  • Item 2: Yamaha DX100. FM synthesis, …

Shock of the Old

The last Malty Media radio show (December 30) was a lot better than the previous one - I was worried that we were losing our mojo. Because we were on leave, we did a bit of last minute work, including construction of a drum and bass tribute to Children of the Dog Star, …
