Gig next Friday

Andy (Group Five)'s down from Auckland and is putting on a gig at Room 101, which is underneath (and part of) Bar Bodega on Ghuznee Street. It's a good space - easy to fill will with small numbers and has a good vibe.

Shanan (Octif) will also be playing, along with a guy I haven't worked with before, Richard (Filmic, see http://www.filmic.co.nz). He's quite a bit younger than us; hope he can cope with us boring old busstards.

As for my set, I'm basically reusing the one I played in Tokyo in February, although I have made some refinements. Good refinements they are, too. The annoying thing I've discovered is that when I write a track it doesn't really come together until the second or third iteration . For example, for this gig I've reworked a four year old track I did called Geocentric. As usual for me, I'm pretty comfortable with the track's various harmonic textures, but the beat was pretty bad. Well, not awful, just a bit stab-in-the-dark arbitrary. So now I've overhauled the beat in a fairly simple way - added bongoes and a 4 on the the floor kick drum. Not especially innovative, but it connects with the other elements a hell of a lot better.

For me when I'm constructing a track in the first phase, because some times I've put a lot of effort into making something work (like my initial beat idea, which in this case was 'try and make a decent beat this time'), it's very hard for me to throw it in and start again (as in 'make a beat that may not be that interesting, but fits in well with the other elements'). Anyway, I'm still learning, but painfully slowly ;-).

Anyhoo, if you happen to be in Wellington, New Zealand on October 19 2007, come along to Room 101.
