About

B4C - Blastique, No.4 and ChinaRED, are an electrochemically fused entity comprising of a scientist, a rocker and a communist. Joining forces with the intention of detonating unwitting dance floors everywhere; their collective passion for meat, glitch, broken beats and distortion makes for a genre-bending amalgamation of sound, both in the studio and on stage. B4C promises to be a live PA explosion of pure intensity and terrifying proportions.

If there were a super DJ collective in Kuala Lumpur, B4C would be it. Comprising John Kuan aka ChinaRED (founder of www.foundationkl.org), Reuben aka Blastique (producer and DJ) and Raj J.I aka No.4, each member brings a unique front to the music that the collective makes. While each man performs under his own individual moniker; together, they make live music that is all at once intense, where the music pounds through you and leaves a mark on your heartbeat.

The trio came together in mid-2006 with an aim to break away from the usual DJ-ing format. No.4 says, "The attempt to break away from the usual stuff was a real romantic notion for us. It was like trying to jam a square peg into a triangular hole. Possible, but not that easy." Taking the best of what each member had to offer, Blastique took upon himself to play the Ableton to lay down a solid foundation for bass and beats, while ChinaRED and No.4 added unto the base sound with live sampling and sound manipulations.

B4C pride themselves on their live PA performances, where they want to change the way people usually view DJ sets. "This wasn't going to be something where you could have a glass of wine in one hand, do a little jig on the dance floor and find someone to hit on. It was going to be Ted Bundy meets Mikhail Baryshnikov with 10000w of subs between them!" No.4 exclaimed. And indeed, that's exactly what they have been doing; bringing back the excitement and pulsating beats that KL's dancefloor have been in dire need of.

Already, B4C has managed to win the hearts of listeners. The collective won the Heineken Thirst Studio People's Choice Award in the very same year they started out as B4C. Strangely enough, when I asked No.4 what is his best experience with the collective so far, he tells me that it's the fact that most of their live shows have been completely unplanned and unrehearsed, with all three just going on stage and losing themselves in the music.

Unplanned shows that result in mind-blowing performances? It seems like making music is second nature to B4C. With a vision to change the face of dance music in KL by expanding their roles to integrate more live elements, on-the-fly sample, instrumentation and keyboard mangling, B4C is on a roll to give the Malaysian nightlife scene something worth shouting about. No.4 points out that B4C would never ever settle for anything less than perfect.

"We've never been one to just sit back and continuously do something we're already comfortable with. That would just be boring, both for us and for the people who come to watch us play. We've been together for more than a year now and we know each other pretty well, so I think the time is right for us to rebuild and regenerate ourselves again. We've got some plans and ideas that we really want to explore," he says.

Those who have never heard the amazing music of B4C can check out "Riot Gear," the song on the Junk CD, which also happens to be B4C's very first collaboration. And, catch them live at Recharge Revelation 5 Global Gathering Malaysia come 27 October.

"We all admire the spangled acrobat with classical grace meticulously walking his tight rope in the talcum light; but how much rarer art there is in the sagging rope expert wearing scarecrow clothes and impersonating a grotesque drunk! I should know." (Vladimir Nabokov)
