battery collection is the pseudonym of joe melnyk. joe has been involved with music creation for the majority of his life in one form or another. starting out with drums at the ripe old age of ten, joe soon discovered that he loved making original music in bands with friends. so he became engrossed with doing just that for the next several years and has played in various bands around the canton, akron and kent, ohio area.
more recently, joe has turned his attention to electronic and computer based-music. after finding nobody to start a jazz/pop/electronic band with, he decided to take matters into his own hands. so he borrowed a friend's synthesizer indefinitely and hasn't looked back.
battery collection music can best be described as electronic influenced pop. early on, joe decided that he was fed up with trying to make crazy electronic sounds interesting and construct songs out of just that; the creation process felt too sterile and laboratory-like for him to enjoy it. so battery collection grew out of focusing on something electronic music seems to minimize - melodies, and lots of them. songs are constructed out of layer upon layer of intertwining melodies, built over a bed of bass grooves and a combination of electronic and live drums.
known for an energetic live set, a battery collection set consists of remixing, improvising, deconstructing and otherwise mangling new and existing material in real time.
battery collection has shared the stage with: casiotone for the painfully alone, crystal castles, health, mice parade, don caballero, gil mantera's party dream, the six parts seven, beaten awake, natalie portman's shaved head and several others. this year, battery collection released a free, self-titled five-song ep via online label hippocamp and is currently putting the finishing touches on a follow-up full-length release.
