Beautiful/Decay Issue: R

Over the last couple of years, we have made a conscious effort at Beautiful/Decay to put together each issue as if curating a group show. We first come up with a theme and then spend many hours doing research, visiting studios, and looking at thousands of images to find the perfect grouping of creative minds from the art, design, music, and fashion communities to complement that theme. Sometimes this task can present quite the challenge, but we always seem to put together an interesting group of interviews and articles by some of the most stimulating and contemporary minds out there.

Consequently, I have kept a mental rolodex of artists whose works are engaging and fresh, but don't necessarily fit one of our predetermined themes. For our first issue of 2007, we have decided to break our mold of a themed issue and instead are featuring a brilliant group of artists whose work stands on its own. Issue: R features a cornucopia of artistic voices and practices, starting with our cover story on Zeloot, a talented young illustrator from the Netherlands who creates psychedelic art-inspired rock posters. From there, we move to the rich Fire Training Facility photographs by Becky Brister, stencil work by John Fekner, the psychedelically meditative drawings of Mike Pare, the collaged fabric work by Ai Kijima, private stock by Lyes, and the dramatically dark sculptures of Richard Stipl. Issue R is a hyperactive reflection of some of Beautiful/Decay's favorite artists connected solely by their collective resistance to a theme. 118 pages full color.

For many artists, the very idea of a public enemy inspires them to create, to rebel, to have a voice and speak out.

In Issue: O, you ll find the psychedelic paintings and drawings of cover artist Erik Parker, the inquisitive typology of photographer Anthony Hernandez, and digital renderings from artist Ben Volta. Our Sound section includes interviews with musician Imaad Wasif and DJ/producer extraordinaire NickNack; we also feature a special segment which reveals ten recording artists answers to the question Who is the public enemy ? On a micro street level we zone in on the origins of L.A. gang graffiti and follow up with Canadian graffiti artist Labrona for Private Stock.

At once a question and a statement, we ve left this one wide open to interpretation. In the pages to follow, the face of opposition is crystallized by a host of artists to determine what is the public enemy.

100 pages full color 8.5 x11 inches with a spot die cut varnish on the cover.
