A photo of my dad today after his brain surgery they performed yesterday. He pulled through ok and is doing well :). Looks funny with half his head shaved hehe. Had to get a shot of that then ;)
They performed a procedure where they run a tube from the ventricles of his brain to his abdomen called Ventriculoperitoneal Shunting. This was due to an excessive build up of spinal fluid that they discovered after doing a lumbar puncture on his spine. They did this procedure because they suspect my father has a condition called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalous (NPH). It can commonly mimic dementia/Alzheimer's in the elderly due to the build up of spinal fluid in the ventricles surrounding the brain; which would cause pressure build up and push against areas of the brain.
With any luck, we're hoping this shunt will drain off excess fluid & hopefully lessen the Dementia, improve his balance & walking capabilities, and possibly affect other areas of his health in some positive ways. Hopefully he can regain some normal functionality & motor skills that have been dwindling over the past few years.
Keeping my fingers crossed & hopes up that this does provide some improvement & comfort for him. He's 77 yrs old and we plan/want to have him around with us for a lot longer :).
