About

" The real deal..... one of our finest talents" - Rolling Stone Australia
"I see things in a funny way," Bertie Blackman says. "I come from a family of painters, so everything I do is pretty visual.
You can see and feel my music."
Bertie burst onto the Australian music scene in 2004. Her stunning single 'Favourite Jeans' was a statement of intent.
In a pop world filled with fashion followers, Bertie is forging her own path. She later explained 'Favourite Jeans':
"With everything being so trend-driven, there's so much pressure to look fabulous ... for me, walking out
in my favourite splattered and worn jeans is my way of staying true to who I am."
'Favourite Jeans' became Bertie's radio breakthrough, and she was dubbed "Australia's underground queen".
Her debut album, Headway, was a folk-inspired adventure, powered by Bertie's acoustic guitar.
The follow-up, 2006's Black, saw Bertie armed with an electric guitar and delivering some grittier sounds.
The Sydney songstress says, "I always trust my instinct".
For her third album, Secrets & Lies, Bertie traded her guitars for keyboards, exploring the electronic world.
"I wanted to do something more electronic and not as band-oriented," she explains."It's dark,
but also a pop record. It's good to make a pop record."
"..... there's always been something about a feisty girl with an axe and a pen, and those
who enjoyed this sound the first few times around probably will again." - mess+noise
Bertie delivers pop music with depth. Her voice is seductive, her lyrics are inventive and honest. And Bertie
is a mesmerizing live performer. "When I'm playing the music, I just disappear into what's going on," she says.
"It all just kind of channels through."
Bertie writes most of her music at night. "I live in my own darkness," she sings in one of the new songs,
'Byrds Of Prey'.
Bertie made Secrets & Lies with Sydney-based UK producer Lee Groves (Goldfrapp, Gwen Stefani, Aqualung).
"Working with Lee was amazing because he is so open to ideas. I loved hearing what he did with the tracks.
This is such a diverse record."
From the sexually-charged 'Thump' to the deceptively dark 'Shout Out', this is an album of many moods.
"I wasn't listening to the radio or pop music when I made the record," Bertie explains. "I went into another world."
She smiles. "I think I'm a little nuttier after this experience. But making this album was a cathartic experience."
Secrets And Lies will be released in early 2009
