This will be an ongoing article of reviews of the bands I see live. It will be in story form since it is a page from the book of my life of going to shows (concerts)/art happenings/clubs and hanging with my awesome friends:
Aaron's Rockin Life n' Review,
Sybris, Unwed Sailor and Little Trooper @ Taphouse Grill June 19, 2008:
Indie fucking awesome rock is really invading the Taphouse now (one again) thanks to Jimmie -Kitchen Manger and booker for Taphouse-. So he brings out Sybris from Chicago, IL on their tour with Unwed Sailor. Opening band was Little Trooper from our area in 7 cities, Norfolk.
My best friend Deb and her Boyfriend Dave came out to the show with me that night. Dave really never hung out with me that much before so he didn't know the kind of music that would be showcased that night. He comes from the same background music tastes and has gone to a lot of the same concerts as I have. So this night would turn electric for us all.
Well Deb, Dave and I get there to the Taphouse at 10ish and Little Trooper is already playing. I find out through the doorman that they are local. I have never seen them before so I am interested since there is a local crowd of hipsters up in front of the stage. Well I catch a PBR and make my way through the packed front. Well our boys from here were rocking out the good stuff with awesome blazing guitar work, snappy pounding drums and bass and good flowing lyrics. It was a very danceable vibe flowing in the crowd of hipsters. So I am dancing right in and getting all the beats down to the good local indie rock music of the Little Trooper. I was glad to learn again that good music still prevails in this town.
Dave and Deb where cuddled drinking beers and showing me posters, tickets, pics from Dave haze days loading on his phone. He has been to some shows that I was at back in the day so that was awesome. So we have something in common. That is good since I have taken his girlfriend/my best friend to tons of shows and clubs that he couldn't get out too to hang out with us. I catch another PBR..well I am into 3 at this point I believe..
Sybris takes the stage.....
Sybris are from Chicago, IL. They posted on my comments on MySpace the day of the show they were doing a show at Taphouse and I should come out. Well I was being myself as usual and messaged them back that I would show up if they put me on the guest list because I would not have any money for beer if I had to pay. I did have money and I was just being a smartass because of course I was coming out to the show that night. But sure enough I was on the guest list and I found out after I paid the doorman for the show. Oh and +1 as well.
Sybris was freaking amazing though. The lead singer Angela invoked an awesome spirit of Sonic Youth meets PJ Harvey with her lyrics, beautiful surround voice and guitar work. Plus if you know me, I love Shoegaze, Ambient, Experimental and/or just Beautiful Noise. Call it what you will. But Sybris are it!! Their sound resided through my heart, soul and to the dance floor. I am dancing up a storm to the awesome sonic noise and clear the floor with my energy. I wasn't moshing or hitting people or anything. The Hipsters were just to cool to dance to a band that they haven't really heard. I am flowing with the music and I don't give a fuck. There is even a punk to the left of me calling me ridiculous and making fun of me. Oh he doesn't know me if I wasn't with friends and wasn't having an awesome time I would have gone apeshit on his ass. But I was in noise heaven and he could not burn my wings. Sybris is mind blowing goodness though so yeah check them out.
After the set I have someone tap me to my right. It is my girlfriend Deb. The other awesome D. My night is complete and the minute the punk fucker see my girlfriend and me kiss and all, he and his friends leave. Weird, did he not think I didn't have friends or a girlfriend. Was he just jealous that I can have a good time? Who fucking cares, not me, because I am loved and I love the friends and loved ones I have and the music that calls to my heart and soul.
Unwed Sailor is takes stage as I am making up to my girlfriend for not stopping by her house like I promised before heading out. Well I am not one for instrumental bands. As much as I love noise I need some kind of vocals or samples in that type of music. But Unwed Sailor helps warp my brain to the side of jam but not jam band. They also have awesome influences, a lot that are my favorite bands. So I kiss my girl's neck to make her smile while the crash of great progressive noise of Unwed Sailor starts. It was an awesome thing and got the crowd to move. The guitars fill the Taphouse to the brim with reverb and the drums and bass beat it all through the roof.
It was really good times had by all. And the Taphouse was packed and busy all night.
Well was drunk towards the last song of UnWed Sailor...And My Deb gave me the awesome eyes.....so we leave and enjoy the rest of the now late night/morning time.
Good friends, good love and awesome great beautiful noisy music. What more can a person ask for. I don't. I just flow and bask in it.
