About

Having spent most of 2007 on the road in support of their debut full length, Bazaar Bazaar, BIRDS OF AVALON have emerged from the studio with a new EP and are ready to kick off 2008 with more touring. BIRDS OF AVALON are Craig Tilley, Cheetie Kumar, Paul Siler, David Mueller and Scott Nurkin.

BIRDS OF AVALON took flight soon after the release of Bazaar Bazaar, and toured with the likes of Ted Leo who told Harp Magazine that BIRDS OF AVALON was his "favorite new band" and Flaming Lips who gave the band the same glowing praise on their website. The whirlwind year also saw the band tour with The Fucking Champs and hit the festival circuit, including dates on Fun, Fun Fest, Popfest, Whirlyball, and the McCarren Pool Party in Brooklyn.

This spring BIRDS OF AVALON will release a brand new 6-song EP, entitled Outer Upper Inner, care of Volcom Entertainment. Recorded without the use of any computers whatsoever, the band opted instead for ½ inch tape on 4-track recorders, which was actually half of the old Columbia Records remote recording unit. It was as if the band traveled back in time to 1967 to enter the studio. Mitch Easter, who was the championing force behind such an experimental test, produced pinnacle recordings for REM, Pavement and Wilco and is one of the few people qualified and motivated enough to take on such a project today.

"Mitch felt our band would be good candidates to do this sort of experiment. We took his suggestion to heart when some of the new songs we were working on seemed to beckon a less layered, dense recording approach" says one of BIRDS OF AVALON'S dueling lead guitarists, Cheetie Kumar, adding "Mysterious sounds and tones happen that you could never contrive deliberately and that is just what we were after."

Back from their flirtation with the past, BIRDS OF AVALON are looking to the future. The band will leave their hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina and embark on a tour that will bring them out to SXSW before meeting up with fellow progressively minded musicians, Black Mountain, for a Midwest jaunt.
