It's about damn time I shook the dust off of this account. I've been meaning to over the past couple of months, but I could never seem to find any time or reason to do so. In the time between my last post and this one, I've been deleting entries since I started this journal. I didn't want to abandon this account, either. Whether I liked it or not, and because of the limitations of Free Livejournal accounts, I had to go through the drudgery of manually deleting individual entries. Come to think of it, I'm glad I didn't post as religiously as I thought I did.

So, how was 2008 for me, you ask? Not so great, I suppose. There were some saving graces here and there, but it felt like a step back in general. No, wait, maybe it wasn't a step back. It's probably more of a dreadful stagnation more than anything else. I don't feel like I've been able to achieve much in the way of pretty much anything over the past year.

This is supposed to be the part where I list down my New Year's Resolutions. Experience has proven that they pretty much don't work most of the time. Screw it. For 2009, I might as well live by these three words:

So we've finally moved to Provident. Nice. Now, all I have to worry about is getting our huge ass mattress and my animation table out of Anonas. I'd call our cousin who lives nearby to help us out, but he's been busy as of late.

Kind of a sad day at work today. Three teachers are leaving. It sucks even more because I get along well with them. Well, at least there's the obligatory exchanging of contact info and the hope that we'll hang meet up again one of these days.

Saw Ate Rose, our former HR head, here at work when I arrived. I really didn't expect her to show up. I'm glad to know that we're still on good terms despite the disappearing act I pulled off last Friday. She knows my undying hatred of Decades and other similar clubs. I hope to make up for it next payday when the evening people head out for karaoke night. Time to prep the pipes for an epic rendition of Always Somewhere.

My cousin's also leaving on Monday. As I told her, after the dust settles, it'll be me VS "them" in the end.

Ah, Friday...

Things might not be going according to plan at the moment, but I'm feeling alright, nonetheless.

I'm looking forward to getting the hell out of the metro once again. That is, if I don't hop onto the wrong bus after knocking down some beers over at Sta. Mesa. As I told my sister, in the remote chance that I do end up on a bus bound for the Batangas port, it's sill good. I'll just catch the next ferry bound for home. Problem solved.

If it happens to be a bus headed elsewhere... I pretty much don't care at the moment. Who gives a shit, it's the weekend. I guess I'm better off getting lost somewhere in Luzon that to be left wasting a potentially good weekend on the same damn things I've been doing for pretty much every weekend.

It's not like it's radically different in Lucena. I still might get roped into going to a mall and such, but at least it'll be in the company of cousins who more or less, are on the same wavelength as I am. It's a good step forward, considering that I haven't seen them in quite a while.

As for next week...

"An uphill battle" would be the best way to describe it. There's a bunch of stuff that I've got planned, and I'm hoping to God (yes, I still believe in Him... fortunately) that everything neatly falls into place and everyone leaves with a smile. Damn, that didn't sound like me.

I know you're gonna see this one way or another. Just so you know, I'm still keeping my fingers crossed. So "bleepin' painful that they're about to get pulled out of their sockets" crossed.

- Less than a week 'til Iron Man opens here. I'll watch on opening day, then go drinking after work, in true Tony Stark fashion.

- Will probably be spending the weekend in Lucena again. It'll save me a ton of money.

- I need to get back into jogging. It's one of the few things keeping me from a future full of strokes and heart attacks, given my lifestyle.

- Gotta get our passports renewed within the next two weeks.

- Is anyone selling a used copy of Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow?

- And yes, I'm in dire need of something new to listen to. Any recommendations?

All it took was a single intentional snub from our bratty little cousin to get my sister all fired up. She does that to both of us (and our mom, of all people)often, and I guess this was really the last straw for Beanne. I generally don't mind these things too much, but yeah, it's gotten way out of hand. She finally expressed her desire to move out of our place in Anonas over lunch. I thought Dad would be agitated, as he usually is when we bring up these kinds of issues. It panned out well, surprisingly enough.

So it's been finalized... well, sort of. We're moving out, we just don't know when, and we have to find a good place first. The biggest concern of course is the location. As much as possible all three of us want the new place to have quick and easy access to Miriam College. Price? It's actually second on the list. But knowing my dad, I'm pretty sure he'll manage to strike a balance between those two issues.

More details as the story develops...

I'll be in Lucena for the latter half of the weekend. My cousin's parents are celebrating their 22nd (Lea, did I get it right?) wedding anniversary on Sunday. Sister's leaving for Lucena in less than two hours. She's actually hitching a ride with Lea and her dad from the office. Me? I've got work. And besides, it's payday, baby. Wouldn't wanna miss that, now would I?

It's also Julius' 23rd birthday tomorrow, which I almost forgot. Yeah, I'm a horrible friend sometimes. Anyway, it's most likely that I'll drop by early, say my greetings and drop off a present, then haul ass to Lawton or Buendia to catch a bus to Lucena.

It's been a while since I went drinking in Sta. Mesa. I miss those assholes.

Some thoughts on Crisis Core...

So, I've had Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII for nearly a week now. I still consider myself lucky for managing to find one last copy on the PSP shelf of Data Blitz in Greenbelt 1. According to the clerks there, it's been flying off the shelves. It's nice to know that there still are people willing to invest in legitimate copies of games.

For a game based on a character that we used to see only in fleeting glimpses and flashbacks, Crisis Core is solid. It fits nicely into FF VII canon and gracefully manages to keep things fresh and engaging. Still, the motivations of some characters leave me scratching my head in confusion. Or maybe it's because I'm just not as well-versed in the FF VII universe compared to some of my friends.

The thing I like best about the story, though, are Zack's interactions with the characters (old and new) he meets along the way. What makes it cooler is how well it's tied into the gameplay. All of this makes Crisis Core a more "personal" game than FF VII itself... which is good, actually. We're not on a grand quest to save the world from certain destruction, it's more of a journey through Zack's days in SOLDIER and how he matures (nicely executed, by the way) leading up to the events portrayed in FF VII and Last Order.

We all (or at least most of us) do know that Zack's inevitable fate. However, it's fun to note that Crisis Core somehow gave me the impression that there's something I can do to change it. It's that feeling of false hope quickly crumbling into helplessness that gives the ending added emotional weight. The sequence of event's during the game's last few minutes has shades of 300, something which I was quick to notice.

... and the ending itself? It'll make you wish for a remake of FF VII, that's all.

Still, the game ain't perfect. I've got a few gripes that I'd like to share real quick:
- The camera, which is uncooperative as hell and can actually be your worst enemy in certain battles
- Side missions lack variety, same for the environments.
- Somewhat repetitive combat. The DMW (Digital Mind Wave) system and boss battles make up for this, though

The overall presentation is the kind you can only expect from a high-profile Square Enix game. The story-based cutscenes and CG movies (some of which, are actually used for Summon attacks) are nothing short of stunning. The soundtrack also delivers a well-placed shot of nostalgia for fans of Final Fantasy VII's original soundtrack.

With all that said, I'm still waist-deep in the game. There's a ton of missions, items, and the obligatory secret boss to defeat, and I'm still pretty far from acheiving those goals. Check back in a couple of weeks (or months, perhaps), since I still play my other games on a regular basis.

Spinning Blades of Death, Wasabi, and.... Zombies?

I had to buy a new electric fan for our room today. Our current one is on its last legs and is just plain being a bitch to work with. Now, I'm not the kind who'd drop 700 Pesos on a brand new fan, but after my dad said he'd refund the amount (it's part of our domestic expenses, anyway) I promptly headed out to Cubao to pick up a fan.

I'm pretty happy with the purchase, actually. It's pretty sturdy and delivers a quite a breeze for something of its size. Yeah, I bought a desk fan. The old one was an industrial-grade stand fan.

Industrial fans make me nervous. They have this whole "spinning death blade machine" thing going on. It only took one incident to prove it. My phone's charger's cord got sliced in a disturbingly clean and efficient manner. The fan's speed was at 1, to boot.

The whole time at Shopwise, me and my sister were avoiding the steel-bladed bastards like the plague.

We checked around the rest of the Cubao area, though. SM's prices were considerably higher, so it turned out to be a waste of energy just going all the way to their appliance section.

In the end, we went back to Shopwise, bought the fan, then bolted back home.

Well, before the aforementioned purchase of the electric-powered cooling apparatus, we dropped by Tokyo Tokyo. The last time I ever went to one was back in June of last year. It was awesome because I taught my sister how to handle an ungodly amount of wasabi. Fortunately, I made sure there was enought red iced tea on hand for both of us.

Tekken stuff...

Divine Fist, baby. However, I didn't achieve the rank with Asuka, as I initially thought I would. Dragunov has it. I'm pretty much on my way to doing the same thing for Feng.
