info: the 40 minute, looped, live installation had musicians 'josh and june' performing in sync with the above video. they performed a fusion of highly improvisational jazz utilizing drums, tenor sax and flute. the video was projected on a large expanse of glass which had a mylar film applied. the film allowed the video to be viewed inside the gallery and at the street level below. the screen was approximately 16? x 4?. statement: since 1990, michael has been studying the interactivity between artists and viewers of sculpture, painting, architecture and/or installations. the project before you has grown out of this search. the main difference in this piece and past works is the role each 'object' plays. in short, roles are inverted. the video installation you are seeing places michael as 'conductor' and the musicians as 'art'. the video content's sole purpose is for the musicians to use as inspiration for their improv jazz set. this video was shot while michael lived on the island of hawaii. it is footage taken, in segments, while driving the entire way around the amazingly beautiful island. the vastly different colors are a reflection of the tremendous range of climatic regions hawaii contains. after manipulating the content to pull out what michael feels is the 'essence of the journey', what remains is a color matrix which sets the tone and mood for the musicians to play. in conclusion, the work creates a triangle of connectivity and creativity from 'conductor' to 'musician' to 'participant'. -- title: CONDUCTING IMPROV -- artist: michael ammerman -- exhibition date: 04.06.2006 -- location: bvs seattle gallery -- file size: 2.3 mb -- online music: pamaronoff . tv jazz -- live exhibit music: josh and june
