We all know people who are socially-retarded in some way or another. They aren't bad people. They mean well. They just aren't quite aware of their surroundings and the norms. Sometimes they lack any sort of awareness of etiquette. If you don't know of their condition, they might hurt your feelings.
I'm noticing a new group of people. They seem unable to be aware of any sort of etiquette when it comes to living in urban settings. Perhaps Tulsa is an obvious spot for this to occur. There are lots of backwater towns within a 30 minute drive of Tulsa and some of the families are bound to move into the city limits for different reasons. Many who do, will adapt quite well. But some will be unaware of their new context. Here would be some clues that maybe the city isn't for you:
-Your teens ride a loud go-kart around & around their backyard all day. Lots of tight turns.
-You can't understand why it's not OK to let your Pit Bull roam free. You assure us that you are known as the "The Dog Whisperer" (true story - how was I to respond?).
-The front yard is a good place for used-appliances.
-It's perfectly safe for your little kid to ride his/her bike down the middle of the streets, all over the neighborhood.
-The neighbors will be impressed that you are breeding Pit Bulls in your backyard (note #2).
-When you wake-up in the morning, you walk outside in nothing but your boxers.
-Late at night, you listen to really loud.... A. Talk radio. B. Polka. C. Hip Hop D. All of the above
-Your relatives park a charter bus in front of the house when they visit.
And yes, we've experienced all of these things. But we'll just keep walking the line of trying to be as loving as possible, while at the same time not getting bitten by their dog.
