Last week we sent about 5000 postcards to every house w/n about a mile radius of our church building. We communicated that we would be glad to help people with outdoor work that they might need help with. We've planned to cut our worship services short this week and then send people out to serve in our community. The feeling of having no idea how something will turn-out is so energizing. If that "something" had nothing to do with our faith, it may or may not be energizing, but making ourselves available for the unexpected "somethings" that line-up with the character of Jesus - now that fires me up.
So how is it going? Actually, quite awesome. We've had a steady stream of calls and e-mails coming in. We've heard from an elderly lady who decided that she shouldn't climb a ladder to clean her leaves. (We agree). We've heard from some people with with disabilities, sicknesses and injuries. They are so thankful for our offer to help.
I can't wait for Sunday. If we don't get to help everyone on the list, we'll find another time to do that. If it rains, we'll get wet. If it storms, we'll come back later. I'm honestly not overly excited about leaves & sticks. But I can't wait for us to be able to minister to people. I love that we are putting flesh on our recent teaching about "What is church." It's not a 1 hour service. It's not a building. Church is us - followers of Jesus. People who are being Jesus to others. People putting flesh on the Gospel.
Hope you can join us. Hope you'll be praying about it.
