I watched the better part of a season of the Apprentice a few years ago. This year I've seen about one & a half episodes. But I've seen Trump make the same error (in my opinion) twice.
If you've seen the show, you know he calls in a few people at the end who will possibly be "fired."
Twice he has fired people because they volunteered to go back in and risk getting fired. Both times they did this in order to show loyalty to their team leader. They sacrificed for the sake of the team. Trump said something like, "Never ever put yourself in a position like that...." followed by, "You're fired."
Really, Donald?
Never take a risk?
Never sacrifice for the sake of the team?
Never allow yourself to be vulnerable?
Never display loyalty?
Obviously, Trump has done pretty well in the business world. But where would he be if had people who worked for him who actually were willing to put the team in front their personal security? Where would he be if his employees weren't always looking out for themselves first? Where would he be if his employees didn't have to behave like a congressman trying to keep his job?
I realize that this is how much of the world operates. But I know it's not the best. There is a better way that empowers people & applauds selflessness. A way that breeds passion and creativity. A way that builds energy and synergy.
If I had an employee that displayed this type of loyalty, I wouldn't fire them; I'd want to give them more responsibility. So on this one point of business leadership, I think Trump has it all wrong. (Next time I'll blog about his hair.)
