On Saturday we went to Boo Ha Ha. It's a Tulsa tradition that follows the Tulsa Run (in which the Kenyan runners once again finished 1st, 2nd & 3rd). Brookside is a yuppy area with restaurants, art galleries & coffee shops that is about 1 mile long. Boo Ha Ha consists of most of these stores having either candy or games set-up for kids, and includes a parade later on in the day. The sidewalk was lined with thousands of people & costumed kids. We were there with our boys and a neighbor and her little boy. We stopped to eat a hot dog outside, and that's when my Spider sense kicked in.
Peoria Street was very busy with cars and I was buying a bag of chips at a sidewalk stand, about 10-15 feet away from the passing cars. A cluster of people were talking loudly in an alleyway, and some motion caught my eye. A baby stroller was rolling away from the group of people towards the street. Nothing was but sloping concrete was between the stroller and the street. I'd like to tell you that I had to jump on the hoods of several of cars to get to the stroller, but I actually just had to take several quick steps.
Once I had the stroller, I saw that there was indeed a baby in it. I pushed it up the slope towards the cluster of people. They still had no idea. I had to get their attention to tell them that their baby had just rolled off in the stroller. The mom (or lady watching the baby) said in an almost laughing way, "Oh my baby," but didn't even acknowledge me and returned immediately to her conversation. She was very busy and seemed unaffected by it. At that point I kinda wanted to push her into the street. But that would have probably undone my good deed.
So the lessons for the day are:
#1. Your story is not more important that your child.
#2. Don't leave a stroller on a slope.
#3. Say thank you to people who save your child from danger.
#4. Buying a bag of chips might not just be a good idea; it might be your destiny.
