Who thinks they know what country music is? Was popular music back in the 60's and 70's just as bad as it is today? Maybe just the creative ones went on to be legends and the cookie cutter stars vanished. I doubt it. I mean sure, there were plenty of one hit wonders back in the day, but the award winners, the big names, the legends, they were actually creative talented people. They sold lots of albums, and made lots of money for themselves as well as their labels. Why is it that we have to put up with this crap music that we are told is country music? Who is driving this train? Is it the record labels, using their formula to sell the maximum amount of albums, is it the people buying the music, do they really like the garbage that is played on the radio, or are they just buying what is being played 24 times a day on the radio?
I read this week that Kenny Chesney made over $75 million last year. Are you kidding me? This guys sings almost as bad as J Lo. People are spending that much money to hear this guy sing? HE'S HORRIBLE! And what about country's boy band, Rascall Flatts with their lead singer who looks like he's was the originator of the Super Size Me diet. With his bad hair plugs and dreamy down syndrome eyes. Their remake of Tom Cochrane's "Life is a Highway" could not be less original. Of course it's a cover song, but at least try to make it a little country? Come to think of it, I think Tom's version is actually slower, making the country version, a little more rockin. What pisses me off more is that because of my three sons, I've heard the song in the movie Cars about 400 times, and I find myself jammin out to it when it comes on. They wanted me to download the album, but I refused and downloaded the original instead.
Anyway, do I have a point? Have I made a point? I could go on for days. But, to me, people who buy what they hear on the radio will buy just about anything. So why not find artists who are creative and have something to say, or who write intelligent, thought out, creative songs? There are plenty of great musicians and artists out there who know what country music is, and how to keep it fresh while still maintaining the definition of Country. Let their music be heard, and let Rascal Flatts guy, go back to being the night manager at Wendy's.
One more thing, just something funny I heard while listening to the radio. A local Country Music DJ was goofing one day after an award show about Mr. Faith Hill, whatever his name is. I had to look it up, Tim McGraw loosing to Lorretta Lynn at the CMA's or Grammy's or something. Anyway, he can't believe that Tim McGraw lost, and then in the same breath says he hasn't even heard the Lorretta Lynn album. Here is your expert on country music, or at least have some knowledge of country music, ripping on Lorretta, and he hasn't even heard the album.
I'm done.

I really think the state of music nowadays is terrible distress. Not the industry as much as the individuality of artists. I too find myself jaming to something that I am fundamentally against (Fall Out Boy) but for the most part all my money and support goes to the bands who are doing something different. I laugh to myself when I look at bands like Linkin Park who have written the same song 50 times and made buckets of money from it. Sure they're rich and could care less what I think but at least the bands I like fulfill my need for creativity.
