About

Bruno Letort (by David Sanson) Born in March 1963, Bruno Letort is one of the essential figures on the contemporary music scene in France. After an itinerant childhood, from Vichy to Paris via Pakistan, Letort studied composition and harmony. This dual course of study, this equal sensitivity to disciplines and styles, which makes light of the contrived boundaries between scholarly music and popular genres, would constantly guide his artistic path. His scores for orchestra (Pièces pour les pays baltes - Pieces for the Baltic States, 1992; Les Cités obscures - Dark Cities; Le Continent obscur - The Dark Continent, in 1998-99), his many string quartets (the disc Escales in 1992) and even a first interactive opera (François Villon, in 1994) are evidence of a wide-ranging inspiration, sensitive both to the heritage of American repetitive composers and traditions from outside Europe or the most advanced new, ambient or electronic music. This creative world draws a large part of its richness and evocative strength from its comparison with others. Bruno Letort's work has always aimed to be cross-disciplinary and interactive, as shown by the number of works that he has composed for the stage and for films, ballets, plays, as well as exhibitions, commemorative ceremonies or video games. He works very closely with Benoît Peeters and François Schuiten, and in particular, wrote L'Affaire Désombres with them. This multimedia show, written for the festival of the 38th Rugissants in Grenoble in 1999, was released first on CD and then on DVD. An educationalist, artistic director (Tapage Nocturne festival in Paris, since 1997), writer (Musiques plurielles, Balland, 1998) and journalist, he has also been a producer at France Musique since 1994 and set up his own label "IEditions!" in 2005 distributed by Harmonia Mundi. He founded "Signature" (National radio's label) in 2000 and recorded as producer with Pierre Henry, Bumcello, Fred Frith, Hector Zazou, Elliott Sharp, Franck Vigroux, Noël Akchoté, Jean-Luc Godard, Bruno Coulais, Luc Ferrari, Christian Fennesz, Mika Vaino, Christian Zanési, Dominique Grimaldi, Renaud Pion, Henry Fourès, Benat Achiary...
