In a pre-emptive strike, the street artist Shepard Fairey filed a lawsuit on Monday against The Associated Press, asking a federal judge to declare that he is protected from copyright infringement claims in his use of a news photograph as the basis for a now ubiquitous campaign poster image of President Obama.
...
Mr. Fairey is the focus of a retrospective that opened last week at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. (In a development that was not much of a surprise, he was arrested there on Friday, accused of illegally pasting his work in places around Boston; he has pleaded not guilty.) A collaged work made by Mr. Fairey based on his Obama poster was acquired last month by the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, part of the Smithsonian Institution, and placed in its permanent collection.
Jon Glaser's "Delocated" Premiered Last Night on Adult Swim

Dropped the ball a little bit on this one, but Jon Glaser's new show, Delocated (which also stars Eugene Mirman), premiered last night on [Adult Swim] (which is essentially the Cartoon Network after dark). Look for more new episodes on Thursdays at 10:30 PM on [Adult Swim].

Delocated is a live-action comedy that parodies reality series. It was created by Jon Glaser for Adult Swim. It is Adult Swim's first live action original series. In the series, a family in the witness protection program are moved to New York City, but only under the restrictions that they surgically graft voice changing devices to their vocal cords and wear ski masks whenever they're on camera. David's problems are exacerbated when his family leaves him over the idea and the assassin, played by Eugene Mirman, discovers his new location.
New TV Shows: Important Things, Eastbound and Down, College Humor

In terms of new shows, it's been a dismal season for network television (I mean The Mentalist, is that piece of drek really the best new show on TV?), on the other hand, the cable landscape looks like it has a few bright spots on the horizon. Though I haven't seen any of them yet, on paper, Important Things, Eastbound and Down, and The CollegeHumor Show, all look like the kind of thing I might enjoy watching. For the uninitiated, here's a little more about each show:

Important Things with Demetri Martin | Wednesdays at 10:30 PM on Comedy Central (Premieres Tonight!)

His TV show, like his act, incorporates these jokes, along with drawings, and guitar-playing, and pie charts, and sketch comedy, and anagrams, and animation, and guitar-playing-with-harmonica-and-a-tambourine-tied-to-one-foot. What it doesn't incorporate is jokes about politics, or Bush, or what-the-hell-is-happening-to-this-country, or any references to the general cultural lunacy of the type that have made Stewart and Stephen Colbert so successful. With its hybrid of stand-up and sketches, Martin's show is more reminiscent of Chappelle's Show, except without the racial edge--as if Dave Chappelle were a white guy who went to Yale and was obsessed with palindromes. [NYMag.com]

Eastbound and Down | Sundays at 10:30PM on HBO (Premieres Feb. 15th)

HBO premieres a new half-hour series about an arrogant, burned-out, former major-league pitcher named Kenny Powers (Danny McBride), who is forced to return home to North Carolina to teach Phys Ed at the middle school he once attended. While wreaking havoc at school with his boorish behavior, Kenny crashes at the home of his brother Dustin (John Hawkes); plots a triumphant return to the big leagues; and makes a pre-emptive romantic strike on former high-school squeeze April Buchanon (Katy Mixon), now a teacher engaged to principal Terrence Cutler (Andrew Daly). The series is executive produced by Will Ferrell (guest staring in two episodes), Adam McKay, Chris Henchy, Jody Hill, Danny McBride and Ben Best.

The CollegeHumor Show | Sundays at 9:30PM on MTV (Premiered February 8th)

CollegeHumor, which peddles fraternity pranks and workplace stunts to an online audience of millions, is making the move to television. The Web site's hijinks are being reformatted for an absurdist 30-minute comedy series, "The College Humor Show,"... The CollegeHumor staffers -- who specialize in three-minute bits of sophomoric comedy for the Web -- wrote, shot and starred in the television series, while they continued to crank out content for their day jobs...
...
By relying on its existing staff as actors and using its offices as the set, the show is a hybrid of reality TV and scripted storytelling. "It's a reality premise," Sarah Schneider, an editorial manager for the site, said in an interview this week. "With a fictional execution," Mr. Van Veen added. Then they high-fived.
Coraline Coming to Off Broadway with Music by Stephin Merritt

Coraline

Coraline was the number 3 movie at the box office this past weekend (Feb 6-8), so that must make the MCC Theatre feel pretty good about its decision to stage a musical adaptation of the Neil Gaiman graphic novel starting in May 2009. Magnetic Fields front man Stephin Merritt is composing the music and lyrics for the new show.

MCC Theater has just announced a bit of unconventional casting news for its stage adaptation of the graphic novel by Neil Gaiman. Jayne Houdyshell, 55, who was nominated for a Tony award for her performance in "Well," will play the 9-year-old Coraline, who wishes for a better a life and finds a parallel universe that holds great promise (until she gets to know her new parents). David Greenspan wrote the book and will also play the creepy Other Mother. The music and lyrics are by Stephin Merritt, of the Magnetic Fields, and Leigh Silverman is the director. Previews begin May 7 at the Lucille Lortel Theater. [NYTimes.com]

Press release after the jump.

World Premiere
May 6-June 20, 2009
Coraline

Music and Lyrics by Stephin Merritt
Book by David Greenspan
Based on the Novel by Neil Gaiman
Directed by Leigh Silverman

Poor bored Coraline. She's left to rattle 'round her perpetually distracted parents' house all by her lonesome. Then one day, her dreams of a better reality are answered as she steps through an old oak doorway and passes into a perfected replica of her own world. Greeted there by a vastly loving Other Mother and kindly Other Father, she's thrilled! But, as the saying goes: Be careful what you wish for...

A musical like no other, Coraline sprang from the minds of three of the most wildly popular cult heroes of our time. Adapted from the truly terrifying children's book by Neil Gaiman (author of the international sensation Sandman), this tale of menace and mayhem is set to music and lyrics by smart-rock iconoclast Stephin Merritt (of The Magnetic Fields), and boasts a book by celebrated downtown actor-cum-auteur, David Greenspan, who serves double-duty as the villain, Coraline's suspiciously nurturing Other Mother.

Coldplay Band Rules (From 60 Minutes Interview)

Coldplay "Band Rules"

These are the Coldplay "band rules" posted on the wall in Chris Martin's London studio. During his interview with Steve Kroft of 60 Minutes the camera paused long enough on them for me to freeze the frame and copy them down.

1. Albums be no longer than 42 minutes, 9 tracks.
2. Production must be amazing, but with space, not overlayered, less tracks, more quality, groove and swing. Drums/rhythm are the most crucial thing to concentrate on; diff. between bittersweet and science of silence. [A reference to The Verve and Richard Ashcroft solo]
3. Computers are instruments, not recording aids.
4. Imagery must be classic, colourful and different. Come back in glorious technicolor.
5. Make sure videos and pictures are great before setting release date. And highly original.
6. Always keep mystery. Not many interviews.
7. Groove and swing. Rhythms and sounds must always be as original as possible. Once jon has melody twist it and weird it sonical.
8. Promo/review copies to be on VINYL. Stops copying problem, sounds and looks better. [Ed. Note: My Viva La Vida promo was in CD format]
9. Jacqueline sabriado, ns p c c, face forward.
10. Think about what you do with charity account. Set up something small but really enabling and constructive. Ref j oliver fifteen [a reference to Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Restaurant]

There were more, but the camera didn't pan down far enough.

2009 Grammy Winners... An Industry Joke Continues

The Grammy Bump on Amazon.com

If you watched the Grammys last night, you know the good news is that T-Bone Burnett can finally complete that outhouse he's been building out of Grammy statues, and the bad news is that the awards show continued its time honored tradition of eternal lameness. Sure Raising Sand is not a bad album, and in fact, the Grammy win will bring some not undeserved attention to this somewhat overlooked 2007 release, but like Herbie Hancock's River: The Joni Letters was it really the best of the bunch? Surely it was the "safest" choice from among all of the nominees for Album of the Year, and that is why the Grammys are, and continue to be, a tired, old industry joke. Here are the winners in the "major award" categories.

Record Of The Year
"Please Read The Letter"
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss
T Bone Burnett, producer; Mike Piersante, engineer/mixer
Track from: Raising Sand
[Rounder]

Album Of The Year
Raising Sand
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss
T Bone Burnett, producer; Mike Piersante, engineer/mixer; Gavin Lurssen, mastering engineer
[Rounder]

Song Of The Year
"Viva La Vida"
Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion & Chris Martin, songwriters (Coldplay)
Track from: Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends
[Capitol Records; Publishers: Universal Music-MGB Songs]

Best New Artist
Adele

PS The highlight of the show for me was Radiohead's "15 Step" with the USC Marching Band.
