Zhang JianWen ist Betreiber des chinesischen Elektronik-Labels bypass. Da verwundert es nicht, dass es sich der Soundingenieur und Musiker nicht nehmen lässt, von Zeit zu Zeit seine eigenen Werke auf der Heimatadresse zu veröffentlichen. Mit "Pleh" legt er eine weiteres Meisterwerk experimenteller ambientischer Klangausflüge vor. Für ein Stück wie "Testing Code" würde ein Jean Michel Jarre wohl derzeit seine Großmutter verkaufen. ZhangJW muss das nicht und beweist, dass die Elektronikszene in China wächst und gedeiht.

we can learn that most Netlabels are run by Germans. China, in contrast, is listed with one entry. I guess this is Bypass, the only Chinese label I know at least. Their catalogue number 16 comes from US American Phillip Wilkerson, whose minimal Ambient makes me think of German Electronica... and so the wheel came full circle.

According to his website, Wilkerson is a busy man. He has a good cue of releases with the usual candidates for experimental Ambient/ Drone stuff (Clinical Archives, Treetrunk, JNN). I do not consider myself an expert in his oeuvre, but Wilkerson's EP "Incidents in Spring" makes me speculate to become one.

Phillip Wilkerson shifts harmonious layers of processed textures, each rich in tone and design. His sound is artificial and glitchy, still Wilkerson manages to enshrine the warmth of his source material. While the first two compositions are plain Ambient or Drone, tracks three and four come off with songwriting qualities. Rural beats, transparent instruments (if you dare to call that cheapo GM piano in "Incident 4" an instrument) at interfering micro-melodies make me think of German Electronica like To Rococo Rot or Kreidler. Auspicious.

Elektronische Musik war schon immer etwas internationaler als andere Genres. Ebenso international ist die Netlabelszene. Für viele hier im konsumverwöhnten Mitteleuropa dürfte es ziemlich schwierig sein nachzuvollziehen, wie es wohl ist, wenn man In Peru sitzt, in Sibirien, in Vietnam oder in der Mongolei und trotzdem gerne frische neue Musik haben will. Plattenladen Fehlanzeige! Das ist das Netz mehr als nur eine Genugtuung, es ist ein Segen. Auch deshalb wird Netaudio hier immer noch unterschätzt.

Worauf ich aber eigentlich hinaus will: Bypass ist ein Netlabel, ein Netlabel aus China, was ich wirklich abgefahren finde. Musik gibt es im Electronica / IDM / experimentellen Bereich und wer wissen will, wie sowas klingt, wenn es aus China in´s Netz geschickt wird, guckt hier: bp.bai-hua.org
Die haben ziemlich gutes Zeug.

Comment donc quelques sympathiques moutons à Coimbra, quelques charmantes vaches dans leur étable rhénanes, chirurgicalement décryptés et enregistrés, par deux parfaits poètes atmosphériques, comment donc quelques bêlements et meuglements techniquement scènographiés, peuvent-ils si habilement nous séduire et nous persuader que, dans un monde où l'on "entend", l'écoute est encore synonyme de partage et donc d'humanité. Stall é a primeira colaboração entre Luís Antero e Marcus Kuerten pouco depois da edição de "Sound Narratives, Vol.5", pela Portuguesa Enough Records, que espelha certas identidades sonoras citadinas com gravações ocorridas na baixa de Coimbra e em dois diferentes pontos de Oliveira do Hospital; Luís Antero transporta-nos novamente ao ambiente rural, com gravações de animais, nesta colaboração com Marcus Kuerten que gravou os bovinos na Alemanha, as ovelhas foram gravadas por Antero em Portugal. Cursed Chimera (Benatos Thompson) brings a more traditional IDM gestalt to his new album, Infinite Caustic Change (on Chinese netlabel Bypass; bp.bai-hua.org). He cites British duo Plaid as an influence, and similarities are apparent. Like that Warp Records artist, Cursed Chimera flaunts a varied palette of sounds and approaches. Infinite Caustic Change starts in surprisingly pretty style (given CC's previous industrial/dubstep productions), brandishing florid melodies above complex rhythms, all of it executed with an acute ear for sound design. Like Plaid's best work, it sounds rich. These tracks come across as if they're being meticulously massaged into being on hardware, but Thompson admits to using plug-ins.

By track 6 of Infinite Caustic Change, "Ghosts," things turn wonky, with the rhythms spazzing out and the synth textures taking on a harsher attitude. "Constant Ghost Fucking" intensifies the noise and increases the chaos, changing the tone dramatically. But "Fellow Spirits" ushers in a more chill, chipper atmosphere; it's tailor-made for soundtracking a moment of resolution in a drama.

With "New York Winter," though, he channels late-'70s Kraftwerk—all glorious, Teutonic melodic pomp and precision beats. "8 Bit Bitch" caps the album with staccato bass bumps and strident synth palpitations. It's as if Cursed Chimera is saying to hell with beauty and deciding to go out with a belligerent jab to your brain
