Canada

Canada is an American indie folk-pop music group hailing from Ann Arbor, Michigan. Their songs are are generally acoustic and feature guitars, drums, cellos, glockenspiels, melodicas, rhodes piano, organ and accordians. They are known for their group vocals and harmonies and energetic live shows where members switch instruments between songs. "They rise above the poor acoustics and give us a rollicking good show, They enjoy themselves whilst they are at it too In keeping with the fashion of the moment, they boast an eclectic gathering of xylophonist, two cello players, numerous percussionists and the like. A swirl of country meets old world knocked in to shape with a garageband ethos."

The band, comprised of long time friends, formed in late 2004 and self-released the six song "How Dare You EP" in July of 2005. Soon after, they were approached by indie Michigan label Quite Scientific and soon signed with them to record a full length album. Recording took place during the fall and winter of 2005 in Lansing, Michigan on a soundboard originally used to mix portions of the second and third Star Wars films.

The band released their debut album, This Cursed House, in June of 2006. The album became the #1 most added album in college radio for June 20, 2006, and later climbed to #13 on the CMJ Radio Top 200 (CMJ New Music Report, Issue 971).

Three short Mid-West/East Coast tours followed with friends Page France (Suicide Squeeze), Saturday Looks Good To Me (Polyvinyl) and Headlights (Polyvinyl). Joe and Ryan became brief members of Saturday Looks Good To Me during this time, playing bass and drums respectively. Ryan later became a more permanent member with the group and toured with them as their drummer during their 2007 US and European tours. Canada also performed at The 2006 Pygmalion Music Festival in Champaign-Urbana, The 2006 CMJ Music Marathon in New York City and SXSW 2007 in Austin.

Canada are embarking on their first nationwide tour during June and July of 2007 and are currently recording their follow up to This Cursed House.

Brief tour update....

or, We Don't Know Why Our Mothers Worry, pt. 1

For example, at a show in Buffalo the other night, we loaded in at 7pm. First, Kaylan and I knitted (we're knitting scarves for the band this tour; she's working on Joe's and I'm working on Ryan's), Saul and Ryan played cards, Steven read, Joe talked to his girlfriend, and Shaul did a crossword. Then Kaylan and I continued to knit, Steve and Ryan read, Saul was lost in a maze in some choose-your-own-adventure book, and Shaul continued his crossword. Ryan and I played cards for a bit. Joe slept in the car for a while; Saul slept in a chair.

Then, Scott David Herman, who does a bunch of sweet websites, including the 826mi site, and with whom I correspond almost daily but have never actually met, showed up with his wife. He is awesome, and it was a huge joy to finally meet him and hang out.

Long story short, we changed into our Halloween costumes (did I mention the whole band is the Royal Tenenbaums this year?), and rocked the shit out. Drinks were on the house. You know.

In Rochester, we played LESTER, our new favorite game, until we were all giddy. We played at the Bug Jar, and they basically have a kitchen apoxyed to the ceiling (including dishes in the sink and food on the plates). After the show, Kaylan and I went to the bar to get a drink. Some guy came up and offered to "buy this round," and the bartender pointed to a gentleman further down the bar and said, "It's already been bought." I only mention it because shit like this doesn't usually happen, and it was pretty hilarious.

Assorted, because I have to get back to, you know, tour:
*Touring is about the best way you can spend your time. I don't ever want to come back. Hoo-rah for spending 24/7 with your favorite people.
*Saul is still eating weird.
*One night, we sold almost $200 in merch. Woo!
*Last night we played in an actual castle in Waltham. We also ate at a place called Joe Sent Me.
*In Providence, RI, some bars give away free hot dogs. These bars also have jukeboxes that play lots of Steely Dan, strong drinks, and horseradish mustard.
*RISD has a sweet art museum.
*4am is going to bed early.
*Highlights: eating at OCB, trying to throw things into one another's drinks, apologizing to Kaylan almost contantly for our crassness, Saul "stalling for time" on stage last night, signing a CD for a 10-year-old girl, convincing Saul that the van was towed, Ryan cutting some fat bastard off to get a sweet parking spot, talking too much about gross things (will not repeat in print). Oh yeah, also: every minute of every day.
*Headlights are very, very nice.
*CMJ is right around the corner, where we will get free shoes and see tons of awesome bands!!!

Also, it should be mentioned that earlier today, Steven PICKED UP A DIRTY LEAF OFF THE SIDEWALK, SHOVED IT IN MY MOUTH, AND PHYSICALLY FORCED ME TO CHEW ON IT. Unrelatedly, he later said that because I'd chosen the band over Revenge of the Book Eaters, he would never mention the French fry incident again. I have a witness. (A collective sigh of relief goes up. He's started mentioning it on stage.)

Alright, I've got people I'd like to hang out with. Bitches got our drink on before the show tonight. Saul's lovely lady (hi Sarah!) specifically asked that I try to blog from the road, so I'm doing the best I can...

And that's the weather, kids, from the mystral planes of endless skies, the skyless ends of earth in flames! (I didn't write that.)

- Amelia

Dear People Who Think the People in Canada Are Nice: You're Wrong.

It started with this innocuous email from me (Amy):

Are we playing Mittenfest on 12/23? It's an 826 benefit. I thought we were, but it's not on the myspace. LET'S DO IT!!

Ryan's response:

actually, let's not. i hate mittens, music, "fests," having fun, alcohol, all of you, everyone who's going to be there, myself, our instruments, and the idea that the money we may help raise will go toward improving the lives of children.

let's just get fucked up and go to a strip club.

Steven's response:

I think I'm going to be too busy, I'm eating at Burger King that night. Sorry.

My response:

Dear Canada,

You are all assholes. I hope you grow up to have children who can't read, write, or express themselves at all. Children very much like you.

I quit. You'll have to find yourself another person who can barely play the cello.

Rot in hell, your friend,
amy

PS Kaylan, Aaron, Saul, and Joe...I still think you're pretty okay.

Steven:

Aaron Shaul, this is why you're my favorite Canadian. You are like the Buddha.

Me:

What did Shaul say?????

Steven:

Aaron Shaul said, "i'm only interested if its name is changed to tacobellfest, the venue is changed to taco bell and i get free taco bell."

Ryan:

On 11/30/06, Aaron Shaul wrote:

i will only play mittenfest if amy allows ryan to travel to sweden, find frida hyvonen, bring her back, and marry both women. i will settle for nothing less.

jeez shaul, you're crazy!

Shaul:

actually, ryan misquoted me. i said "i will only play mittenfest if amy allows ryan to travel to sweden, find frida hyvonen, bring her back TO ME, THEN GET US (ME AND FRIDA. NONE FOR ANYONE ELSE) TACO BELL. i will settle for nothing less.

Steven:

Buddha.

Friends, do you know who suffers in this scenario? Do you know who is the innocent victim in this mindless banter? THE CHILDREN, friends, THE CHILDREN.

See you at Mittenfest!

summertourdates

Hi. This is the band Canada.

We wished to let you know that our summer tour dates are appearing and are posted on our main page, and our wish was granted. We will indeed update as the rest of the shows are confirmed. We want to come to your cities and drink your beers in your wonderful sunlight with you and your friends and your families and your dogs and cats if you have dogs and cats. Steven will be leaving his cat (and best friend) behind and he is sad about that. Fact.

So excited for summer we cannot sleep, we cannot eat, we cannot even dream (Saul has been sleepwalking out to the Canada van in the middle of the night with his backpack thinking its time to go, what a rascal).

Also, a new split EP with Page France is almost finished (truth). Our next record is underway (indeed). And when the rain thinks it laughs last, then I drool on it.

Rain and Darkness and Electricity

Hi. Thanks for stopping by today. It is raining furiously here in Michigan at the mo'. I'm sitting here in me bedroom with the porch door open and all sorts of rain and darkness and electricity are attacking the senses of most of the metro-Detroit area. I figured now would be a good time to update you on all the happenings.

First, our first national US tour starts in exactly 24 days. We'll be starting our tour in lovely Ypsilanti at The Elbow Room on June 8th with a bunch of bands on our record label (Chris Bathgate, The Dead Bodies and I Am A Bolt Of LIghtning) as well as a great band called Elm from Arm, whom you should come see. There will be free beer while it lasts. It shall be our very last Michigan show until the end of July. From there we shall be traveling slowly Westward for all of June and then spending July to the East.

Second, our split EP with Page France has been put on hiatus for the time being. A great and powerful warlock kidnapped our master copies and has thrown them through the Abyssal Door and, last we heard, are floating somewhere along the rim of Saturn. But fear not, on our tour we shall (hopefully) have a cassette EP available with six songs. Side A will be three brand new tracks never before released and Side B will be three of our favorite live tracks from the last year or so.

Third, we are well underway on our next LP and have about 12 brand new songs such as Brick Beetle Blues, Crimson Cookies and The Future Farm Is Now The Home Of The Cat's Crow (No Sense In Sleeping).

Stay tuned for further developments and announcements. Thanks for reading and for listening, as always.

Yours everlastingly,
Steven of Canada
