Canon
I was driving home from work when a new song jumped out at me from the humdrum of the daily traffic. The sound was unique, the lyrics compelling and curious; “Don’t Trust the Teachers” sang the lead. As an educator I listened harder to see what typical teenage rock message was being promoted now. Instead I was surprised to find the message was one, that I myself had concern with… the over drugging of children in our schools. This was not a typical “Rock” message. They lyrics were succinct and clear. There weren’t a lot of useless cuss words used to shock. The message was shocking enough.
As it turned out this was an interview with Canon’s drummer Cassidy Turbin and their bassist, Benji Pope to promote their new CD “Wide Awake”. These band members impressed me with their musical knowledge of jazz and music theory. Cassidy described Jason Turbin, the lead singer and composer of the group, as someone whose art comes from a classical vein. And you can here this in the music. The complex chord progressions and intricate melody however is married with the styles of Cassidy’s unique percussion, Benji’s innovative bass melodies and Tieg Johnson’s proficient guitar lead to give the band a sound we’ve not really heard before.
When I got home I checked out Canon’s website to listen to more of their innovative music. With songs like “Alive” and “Renaissance”; I realized I wasn’t listening to love songs or the typical rebelliousness of rock. Rather this was an invitation to look around us with eyes wide open and to really witness the environment, as it exists; but also an invitation to do something about it. This CD is an invitation to challenge the social veneer of the status quo and to get active as is evident in the lyrics of the song “Alive”.
This impressed me to study the group further, to listen harder. I suppose I could include the bio of these very talented and interested young musicians but I know you could do that by checking their Web site at www.canontheband.com, which you should and listen for yourself, the magic that Canon has created. I am very sure this is a band that will be around a very long time to come, challenging us with their viewpoints and talent.

Welcome to our virb site. We have over 60,000 friends on our myspace page, but I like the look and feel of virb better. Also, the people on virb in general seem like they would be more into our type of music, so I made a page. Please write us, we always write back!
