Lyrics

(C Gruber)

Consider a practical press, a communicator I guess
While I try to write these words, I'll do my best
Sure I have a story to tell it's swell and time will tell
What I meant to say when the records sway and the beat done fell
My life on the streets was brief, that's relief
To get yaself back up on ya feet
I didn't do it alone, but the decision was mine
I was bound and determined to see what I could find
Eventually the hustle ended, shoplifting stopped cold
Spend a night in jail, spend a week, ya done been told
To blow every chance the way I did makes no sense
I was lucky to be released on my own recognizance
My parents worked hard to try to build me up right
But it's hard to be right, when ya caught in a fight
They tried to make me into their dream, but just couldn't see
That what I needed to be was that I needed to count on me

I've been rising up/Since the day I was born
XG is rising up; motherfucker is rising up
Here we go, come on

My mom saw me a doctor, she said I had compassion
But that just wasn't my passion, but neither was cashin'
Now I look back at then, perhaps a doctor I'll be
That is if any med school will take a chance on XG
My father saw himself, but he didn't like that
He saw his failure in me and he beat that down stat
Not sure if they hated me, not sure I even care
All I know is that they hated me being me, no matter how unfair
I had to get hurt, I needed to rise up on my own terms
I had to take my chances, there were lessons to be learned
They sheltered me from so much, tried to keep me from myself
But they didn't realize that sort of things never helps
I had to sleep in graveyards, in shelters and such
Got sent to hospitals, saw my life was truly fucked
When Christmas 94 came along, I was institutionalized
My parents rejected me, I had no-one in my life

Out of simple desperation, I hooked up with wrong girl
We were codependent kids bringing a child into the world
We were only attached to each other out of need
So when it all fell apart, I got out with some speed
My boy B helped me out, and my new girl helped me up
They were there when I needed it worst, to help me be tough
They taught me never give up, never retreat
Before long, XG was on point, back on his feet
Stronger than ever, looking for some direction
With true support from my people, and genuine affection
Built up my skills, got myself work, and did well
It was never that easy, but I'd take over that hell
That I put myself through, attached to horrible folks
My life back then was tragic, that shit was a joke
When I finally emerged from wreckage I'd caused
It gave me the courage to take charge, be the boss
