I just got back two new Cenotype reviews. So far they have all been pretty good.

This first one isn't the best, but I gotta roll the good with the bad and I can't say that I don't see his point, somewhat.

Interview 1

This 1st interview comes from Moving Hands Music Magazine

Cenotype "Origins"
Format: CD/Album
Online date: 3/7
Label: Hive Records
Genre: ambient industrial

I can't say that I've heard about this artist before and for those like me I can tell you that this industrial one-man-band hails from New York and has been active for years in that area. This type of industrial music is best explained as old-schoolish and a bit dark ambient influenced. The record starts with a really nice ambient, 10 minutes long, track which I really enjoy. It's a bit drone like and has all the nice metallic sounds and screeches you could want. But when the more rhythmic bass driven industrial begins on track number 2 I can't but feel that there's something missing. Sure it's cold and dark minimalistic industrial but I would like something more with such a great first song. There are two more ambient tracks on this CD which are excellent, especially track number 9 a track called Justice which grows from very low ambient music to what could almost be described as power electronics / noise and he does it really good as well. Would love to see more work from his ambient / noisier side, that would be great.

Interview 2

This second interview comes from gothtronic.

Cenotype is the industrial project of Lenny B. aka DJ Wintermute from New York. After some years of activity in the New York industrial scene, Lenny B. decided it was time to make his own music under the moniker Cenotype and Origins is his debut album. The sound on Origins is twofold, with dark ambience, such as you can hear in the ten minutes long dark ambient track 'Sinking', as well as with technoid industrial beats, but these two sides do form a coherent nicely blended whole. On the one hand the music grabs back to the early Ant-Zen sound, think Imminent Starvation with regards to atmosphere and on the other hand you'll hear the typical US rhythmic industrial, with merciless loud gabber related beats such as we know of for example Terrorfakt or Prometheus Burning. This rhythmic side seems to be influenced by the works of Dirk Iven's Sonar as well. The music overall has a threatening subsound tension, that is combined with noise eruptions and technoid rhythms focussed on the club environment. Good examples of these Cenotype tracks are 'Skip Trace' and 'The Mind Wanders'. The track 'Justice' that cleverly goes from dark ambient to a white noise eruption, has been made together with fellow New Yorker Leech of Navicon Torture Technologies, who was responsible for the screamed vocals as well as lyrics and added sounds. Worth mentioning as well is the ominous gloomy artwork of the cd, made by Davyd Pittman of Hive records. Origins is a strong album with a beautiful balance between sphere and beats, which ensure extra depth in supplement to the club centered beats. Really recommended to fans of the genre.

All-in-all, not too bad.

The first review here definitely had some valid points and constructive criticism, which is good, I think. It will only help me to improve for the next release.

The second review is pretty awesome.

I am happy. ================================================================ + 7/05/07

Cenotype is the featured band on Vampire Freaks right now!

The gauze-bandages evolution continues!!! By watching the artwork (great job, Mr. Pittman) to the new and debut release of the New York-based one-man act CENOTYPE I had the impression, that it could re-animate the ideals of the renowned veteran duo Ivens/Verhaegen (THE KLINIK) at some point. Behind CENOTYPE "hides" Lenny B. a.k.a. DJ Wintermute and ,,hiding" is the right term to keep his look behind some bandages and ,,black leather" shirts and jackets.
And the opening track, the more than 10 minutes clocking deep dark facility-like sounding ,,Sinking", even strengthens this impression - really cool Dark Ambient stuff to "sink" in. Although that this opener slows down this album, Lenny then likes to demonstrate with the following tracks why he got signed to Hive Records, one of the finest resources for harsh and rhythmic arranged Powernoise efforts. "Save Me" is a one of this pounding tracks featuring some strange human voice-like samples and a churning metallic attitude. "Pieces" and "Skip Trace" bring on besides the noisy inserts some solid bass kick work and follow rather some known paths which acts like TERRORFAKT, ALTER DER RUINE or ENDIF have gone before. Comes then with "Think It And Will Be" the return to a static and creepy Dark Ambient outfit, which features a mysterious female vocal performance in - I guess - Hispanic language. This diabolic piece works excellent to prove that Lenny understands it well to integrate diversity.
Follows then my personal favorite "The Mind Wanders". Well, what wanders here are the masses with the intention to bring some action on the dancefloors of the dark clubs. Rich and detailed arranged rhythm patterns featuring complex inserted percussion elements and tasteful synths spots unite to a killer track which rivals the throne of the Crunch Pod heroes ENDIF or CERVELLO ELLETRONICO. The track "Is" cools down the scenario with an almost sedating Dark Electro-like synth layer, until "She Dead... Requiem" and the final piece "Unearthed" bring back some rotten bodies to the dancefloors. In between the track "Justice" likes to start an assault with a chainsaw against your central nerve system. Starting as an ominous Dark Ambient piece until the rough white-noise-like wall of sound and an enraged male "screaming" performance lead the scenario - no wonder, since this track is a collaboration effort with NAVICON TORTURE TECHNOLOGIES, this fact already explains its outcome.

As for being a DJ, Lenny B. knows well to animate the masses by providing rhythmically Powernoise efforts. That he's capable to offer a wider musically insight with some murky Dark Ambient tunes rather surprises, but this even sets him to a higher and much appreciated level. Here's a true musician at work and this release is a top-notch and entertaining output for the Powernoise genre. Thumbs up!

Cenotype - Origins Editor's Pick

Cenotype -- Origins Buy it at Amazon

Apple iTunesalt Buy it from InSound

Warped industrial outfit Cenotype has shunned the latest EBM trend in industrial music for more of a classic harsh industrial sound. Akin to the more brash and twisted forms of industrial music, "Origins" is heavy, stinking, and dark. Energetic pulse-biters are still present reminding one of the great Psychopomps in delivery. Caustic synths and thick ambient soundscapes surround the driving rhythms to forge a trance-riddled psychotic dance that no one will emerge from completely unscathed.

Cenotype is the rhythmic industrial project of Lenny B. a.k.a. DJ Wintermute. A long time supporter of Industrial music, Wintermute decided it was time to express the ideas and songs that had been wracking his dreamspace and finally make them a reality. For years Cenotype has been active in the New York City industrial scene, and after much fevered anticipation finally unleashes his debut CD with all of the kinetic energy of an underwater nuclear test. With a nod towards the early Daft/Ant Zen sound, Origins is 10 tracks of chest-kicking industrial rhythms and murky black ambience. Like some archaic destruction machine, Origins unfolds in waves of grinding steel and arcs of white-hot electricity. Bass kicks warp and buzz below thick slabs of dirty ambient rumbling, and the violent churning rhythms make movement absolutely mandatory. This isn't armchair mood music, this is the soundtrack to an army of machines smashing your city to glass dust. Special Thank You to Polina Z. She is Cenotype's photographer and graphic designer. Go check out her work at www.polina-z.com. Live the insanity!
