From his 14+ years of playing at some of the Westcoast's most legendary nights and events to managing both of the world-renowned record stores Otis Music, Chris Lima has been passionate and driven from the start. His Beats & Scratches shows are remembered as being some of the most innovative the city had seen in a long time.
While his sets are as entertaining to watch as they are to listen to, it didn't take long for people's ears to perk up to his unique production style. His Clash and Beatles edits were only the beginning of the buzz. Now, DJs from Ibiza to San Francisco, Costa Rica to Philadelphia are dropping his tracks and asking him to simply keep them coming.
His sound is not easy to generalize as he draws from so many different influences. From the forward thinking mentality of Electronica to that party rockin' vibe of old school Hip Hop. The infectious rhythms of Brazilian and Afro-funk to the late night slammers that make you sweat. Simply put Chris Lima blurs the borders of what some might refer to as "Dance Music". But he's not one to settle as he's always exploring new directions whether in the studio or on the crossfader. There's rawness to his style of music that people can't help but get in to and his skills on the turntables have left crowds scratching their heads and filling the dance floors.
"...I'm not one of those DJ/producer types who stands hidden behind a pile of gear in some dark corner simply playing music and not interacting. To me that's boring and if i'm up there not having fun there's a good chance that those listening won't either. Whether I'm DJing or playing live I see it as a privilege and that the people around me deserve everything I can give them. I like to be active while on stage and put on a show and entertain a little. To me that is a very crucial factor that some DJ's, producers and performers out there lack, don't know much about or have simply forgotten. And it's a shame that there are some people out there who may think that's what DJ's or people who produce and perform electronic based music are all about. I hope that some of those same people are able to see and hear me play one day so I can alter that perception a little bit."
~ C. Lima 2007
2007 has already been another fantastic year for this Vancouver native. His unique and diverse musical sensibility has allowed him to share the bill with artists such as Fred Everything and Sonar Kollektiv's 1Luv. And more recently, with the legendary Alex Paterson and Techno guru Kenny Glasgow at one of Canada's biggest Electronic music festivals called Soundwave. And with a much-anticipated EP on the horizon and more shows always around the corner, there's no doubt more and more people will be getting their heads around the LimaBeats sound.
