Drum Programming

I love making music, but if there's one thing which i can't put my whole heart in, then it's drum programming. When making beats, there's a constant need to feel that things progress, if they don't go fast enough to my liking, i lose interest in the beat and never finish it. That's why my best stuff is always done rather quickly (with the mixdown and minor changes taking weeks). With programming drums, i don't get this feeling. A friend of mine described it as being a 'necessary evil', i don't want to go that far since the music i make, is heavily based on drumpatterns and if your drumgroove isn't good, your whole track just sucks. Dancemusic in general needs good drumming. But it can be quite the drag. What i did when i just started was taking readily available drumloops, layer some hits beneath it and just go on with the actual music in the track. That doesn't suits me anymore so i'm faced with hours and hours of meticulously editing drumparts and it drives me MAD. Another thing i don't like that much is cutting breaks. It's also very necessary work, unavoidable really, but i could spend my time better. One of the main reasons why i don't really like it, is probably because i can't translate my drum-ideas that well into real drum-patterns. I often know how the drums should sound, but getting that into my sequencer can be quite the task. Most often i don't succeed and either have a bad drumfill/pattern or i resort to tried and tested methods. Maybe it's time to get some drumpads so i can more quickly lay down my basic idea about what rhythm i want and bother about the sounds at mixdown. Oh well, there's always room for improvement and i might just have to bite through the sour apple and start taking it more serious.
