About

clique is a musical experiment, not to be confused with experimental music, as in the genre. Stylistically, clique may in fact encompass any genre. Operating somewhat like an exquisite corpse game, clique is an experiment in blind collaboration. To explain by way of example, here is how the first project, clique-i, took place:

This was clique-i:

I (John LaSala) first created a skeletal piece of music ("proto-clique"), loosely establishing a tempo, tonal center, and hints at some melodies. I then handed "proto-clique" off to another cliquester (Bilian) and asked him to create something--anything!--to go along with it. This lead to "clique-clique."

So far, nothing unusual. But here's where it gets interesting.

For the 2008 RPM Challenge, I then passed only "proto-clique" off to another cliquester (Joshua Wentz) and he created "jinn-clique," leading to the first test in the experiment: How will "jinn-clique" sound against "clique-clique," two pieces of music that were both created against the same reference ("proto-clique") but neither of which were created with knowledge of the other? It turns out they sounded pretty awesome together, their hybrid synergistically giving rise to something with a unique character that likely couldn't have been born elsewise.

So then all three of these "cliquetracks" created so far, along with every conceivable hybrid, were subsequently passed around to a host of other cliquesters, spawning evermore fascinating musical creations, the new creations being combined with old ones only to be passed on again. In the end there were nineteen cliquetracks. And during one feverish evening I mixed 'em all up into seven different mixes, using each one to attempt to bring out all the curious qualities that the countless combinations and permutations could produce. The results are "clique-i: mix the first" through "clique-i: mix the seventh," all of which you can hear here at Virb.

become a cliquester

So that's the story of clique-i. Who knows what the 2009 RPM Challenge will yield for clique-ii! If you'd like to be a part of it, either send me an e-mail or send a message through Virb.
