Isn't it Ironic?

So I finally found something to take away the pain of my beloved Buckeyes losing another championship to Florida: Alanis Morissette doing a cover of the Black Eyed Peas' My Humps. 'nuff said.

Confession

I like the new Avril Lavigne single "Girlfriend."

There, I said it. I know, by all rights, I should dislike this song just like I disliked all her old stuff, but there's just something about this one that catches me. I'm not sure if it's the infectious beat, the cynical humour, or maybe the fact that she looks so darn cute in the video (I can't believe she's 22, though ... and married? why's she singing about being a girlfriend, I don't know). Anyway, call this a guilty pleasure or whatever, I don't care. Just deal with it.

Haha

I just looked out the window, and saw a guy running down the street, and he looked like a guy that was in my french class last year. Then I notice behind him are three older chinese women running after him. My friend and I had a good laugh at that one. That's all.

What a strange week

Well, this whole crazy week started with the always-euphoric Faint show last Thursday, after getting my haircut from my ex-girlfriend, who hasn't cut my hair for a year and a half. Then on Friday I got to see my parents and my sister who was in town from Boston, and her oh-so-cute dog Gabby. Saturday was St. Patty's, but otherwise a normal day at work, then off to celebrate St. Patty's in style, followed by the recovery on Sunday. Before leaving work Sat. nite, I found out that I was scheduled at all the following week, which everyone thought was really strange. So instead I was able to pick up hours in the stock room, which meant I had to be at work everyday at 6am, and had to get up at about my normal bedtime. Then on Wed, I was taking out the trash bag of soda cans to put in the recyclables, and somehow sliced my finger open, with blood gushing everywhere. I didn't have to get stitches, but I still have a nice little canyon on my finger tip. Stitches also would have been bad since I'm in the process of switching insurance, and thanks to those idiot bastards, I'm not currently covered. This slicing of my finger also brought on a migraine for me, which I haven't really gotten since high school. Even though it was a mild one for me, I was still incapacitated all of wed. nite, and still had to fight through it all day thurs. Thankfully nothing crazy happened today, and we even got all of our work done and got to go home 2 hours early (at noon).

That was my week, how was everyone else's?

On a side note, Casino Royale is the best Bond movie ever. And Eva Green is the most beautiful woman alive.

Gotta get me outta here

Going to a frat party here in rolla last nite for st. pat's (not st. paddy's cuz there's nothing irish about this whole rolla st. pats best ever festival) has convinced me that I gotta get outta this town. Now the party wasn't exactly my particular style, cuz everyone's drinkin bud light without a guinness to be found anywhere and they're playing hip-hop music instead of techno, but I can get past all that and still have a good time. What I hate about these parties (and this town in general) is the inherent desperateness that you see everywhere. At this foam party we went to, the guys outnumbered the girls by about 6-1, and every hot girl had a boyfriend on her arm and about 20 other guys just standing around her and following her. The boyfriends refuse to let the girls out of their arms' reach for fear that she'll end up with one of the other hundred guys in the room, even all the ones standing around her at that moment. The best part of this was the time when two girls were dancing together and they each had a guy practically attached at the hip. They both just had bras on, and about thirty guys were just standing, not dancing or anything, in a circle watching this like a schoolyard fight. They were even stacking coolers on top of each other to stand and get a better look. One guy reached his hand in and was ecstatic that he had touched this girl's boob, and another guy was telling his buddy he would give him three-hundred cool points if he pushed his way in and danced with the girls. (The buddy didn't go) Normally I'm one of the people that hates to just stand around and watch, I'd much rather be out there dancing, and when I'm at a club or show in any other city, I'm always out there dancing, usually with some random girl that I just went up to and started dancing with. We dance, have a good time, and that's the end of it. I don't know her, she doesn't know me, not even sure if there's a boyfriend, I'm not desperate, I'm not looking for anything but a dance, and everything's cool. But here in rolla, I just can't seem to get into it. I'm sure it's just a mental thing, but I'm burned out, and gotta get away.

On a side note, the job that would've gotten me out of here real quick isn't looking good, but I haven't given up yet. However, the grad school situation looks a little better, and if that works out really soon, I can figure out where I'm going, even if it just to springfield, mo or lawrence ks. Either way, hopefully it's just a few years til I get my masters, find a job, and move back to boston, unless I find someplace better.

I know I'm rambling, just deal with it, and watch employee of the month if you haven't. It's freakin hilarious. And someday I might actually get more pics up, but for now I guess I'll just have to be mysterious, or something like that. And join my Noid group, it's lonely just me and the Noid.

Whoo! Alright Yeah...Uh Huh

For those of you who haven't heard the new single by the Rapture, outlandishly known as "Whoo! Alright Yeah...Uh Huh," you need to check it out. The video's on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0bzmjZQYno.

People don't dance no more
They just stand there like this
They cross their arms and stare you down
And drink, and moan, and diss

Genius!

Rant About Music Fans

I know I shouldn't read message boards about anything related to music cuz all it does is piss me off, but here's a few comments I wanna make:

There' a difference at being a talented song-maker (lyrically and musically, separately) and being a talented musician. Talent for making good songs is really a matter of personal opinion, but basic musical talent isn't. Either you can do it or you can't.

This argument started over Panic! at the Disco being nominated as NME's worst band of the year. Personally, I like the style, vibe, or whatever you want to call it of the music that Panic! makes, and they are very talented at enhancing that style and getting it to the masses. And they've become pretty popular and rich along the way. I commend them for that. However, their actual musical abilities are lacking and that's why I find myself unable to actually like them. I'll be the first to admit that I have no musical abilities (but all my friends are musicians) and even I can recognize that they still need some work. However, down the road, they might be better musicians and maybe then I'll like them, but right now hearing their lack of musical talent is just grating, and I think they deserve a worst band nomination.

And yes there are plenty of bands whose music I don't like at all, but they are definitely talented at making music, even if my personal opinion is that they suck at making a good style of music. And as much as people may hate them for many reasons not even related to music, U2 is a band that proved that they can become better musicians over time. They admit themselves that they sucked at music when they first started and tried to create a new sound or they were never gonna make it. And slowly their musical talents improved, even if you don't care for the style of music they make.

I think buying a cd of a band that was nice to you is just stupid. Personally, I'd rather listen to an asshole singing good music I really love than a nice fellow whose music is only so-so. Unless you personally know the band and you'll buy the cd to support your friends even if you it's not your favourite, buy the cd's of the music you like, not the personalities you like. I'm sorry, but a band being nice to fans is not proof that they are truly in it for the music, and not just to become rich and famous. Maybe if a band is mean to you that means they don't care about making fans and making music for those fans but just make the music they like. I don't know.

A band becoming popular does not mean they sold out or are too commercial. It's not a bad thing. Selling out means changing your style to something that you don't even like, solely in order to make it big. If a band creates the music they like for five years, and then suddenly get discovered by MTV, they have not sold out. Putting yourself out there on tv and radio and internet is not pretentious, but smart marketing. I hear a lot of people talk about the old bands that were not sell outs, but the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin did everything they could to be the biggest band in the world, so don't champion those old bands as fighting against commercialism.

Remember that making music for bands is their business. If they don't have the money, they can't continue to make music, at least not a big degree. A long time ago, musicians had to have rich aristocratic patrons to pay them to make their music, but that music was only heard by the patrons, not the masses of people that listen to music today and provide the support for the musicians. Like I said, changing your style just to get money is bad, but loyal fans of small bands spreading by word of mouth is a great way for a band to make money. I'm sick of the whole indie scene where it's like a competition of who knew a certain band first or who is a fan of the most obscure group, and no one will share the bands they love with others for fear that their beloved band will get big, have videos on MTV, and they can no longer be a fan of that band. Guess what? If no one ever told anyone about the small bands they love, those bands won't make any money, and have to quit making music to go back to flipping burgers. Like the band Acceptance (which I told practically everyone I knew about) decided it wasn't worth it to continue and they've broken up. Now I don't get to here any more stuff from those guys.

So listen to the music that you like, whether that band is the biggest band in the world, or if you're the only one who's ever heard em. And tell everyone about the obscure bands that you love, you're really doing yourself a favour.

That's all I really have right now. I'm sure there's more stuff about the music industry and fandom that pisses me off, and maybe I'll share those later. Let me know what you guys think about these things or other things that piss you off about music.

Well, there's always next year

This has been a pretty crappy football season for me, not because any of my teams did really bad, but because they did so good, but were stopped so close to the end. First, my Ohio St. Buckeyes blew the championship game in horrible fashion. Then my Tennessee Titans put on a great finish under Vince Young only to not make the playoffs on tiebreaks. My Kansas City Chiefs miraculously made the playoffs and got blown out by a Colts team I hate. Then my Patriots who looked to cruise to another Superbowl appearance lost a heart-wrencher to those same Colts. So I guess I'm cheering for the Bears to crush Peyton, and here's to next year for all my teams

Who puts rock 'n roll in your blood

I've been listening to the new song "Who Puts Rock 'n Roll in Your Blood" by the Elms, which is all about life in small-town America, and how is it that the guys in the band strive for something big and travel the country in pursuit of their dreams, while all their friends are content (or maybe not content) to stay in their same small-town and manufacture nuts 'n bolts for the local factory for the rest of their lives.

Now I prefer big cities, but I also understand the appeal of small-towns and the quiet, more peaceful life they bring. But lately it seems that all my friends who live in this same small-town I do, have lost all their ambitions and dreams. I'm not sure if it's a product of small-town America, or maybe just the certain small-town I happen to be living in, or if I just have the wrong friends, or maybe it's just my stress and frustration of doing nothing but school and work for the past few months with only a few nites of actually having a good time, or if it's just lack of sleep.

I just remember all the times we used to go out all the time to have fun (especially for concerts), but now they would all rather sit at home and do nothing. Even if there's a show that we all want to go to, we'll make plans and everyone will back out at the last minute with me left standing there wondering what the hell is going on. Some of them always claim they have no money, but they won't work more to get money, and I'm not even sure what they spend their money on, 'cause they never do anything. It seems the only one besides me who actually wants more, moved out of this town and is getting married in a month, so it's understandable that he has no money.

I'm not really sure what I'm ranting about; I'm just frustrated at people always backing out of everything in order to do nothing. Maybe I'm just impractical in wanting to have a good time now and then, maybe I'm just a dreamer, and maybe I just want too much, and maybe I just wasn't cut out for life in small-town America like my friends were. But I just think we should follow our dreams (in life and for one nite of going to a show or whatever), without losing ambition and bailing on your friends.

And also that new Elms album Chess Hotel is really good, so check it out if you haven't yet.
