This Week In Comics for July 28, 2007 - A Fred Review

This was a pretty decent week. I had 13 books and they had a B average. Image was the Publisher of the Week. Captain America #28 was the Book of the Week. Black Canary #2 was the Shit Book of the Week.

Marvel
Marvel had a pretty good week. They had the Book of the Week in Captain America #28. They had a B+ average over 5 books.

Captain America #28 - Wow! This was really really good. This is certainly one of the best books on the shelf month after month. I'm really excited to see where this goes.

Rapid Fire

What the hell is in that letter? I have to know and I have to know now.

Is it weird to find Sin attractive? (The character not the concept)

How many people is that guy going to hypnotize? damn

Nick Fury is the shit. We need him back "above" ground.

Silencers (the opening scene) was awesome. I love the dialogue and I love Bucky's internal narrative.

This was really amazing. A+

Ultimate Spider-Man #111 - This was a fitting send-off for Mark Bagley. This was an amazing, funny, touching, and interesting story. Bagley will go out on an incredibly high note. I've had a lot of admiration for Bagley for a while now. It's true that he's not in my small group of favorite artists, but I respect him a lot because his art is above average and the book always comes out on time. Bendis really gets Spider-Man. A

WWHulk #2 - This was pretty good. The story was a bit wonky in places. The art was as well. I'm still in and I'm still excited but this particular issue could've been a bit better. B-

WWH Front Line #2 - The first story in this is really good. The second was barely readable. The third was kind of amusing. It's worth it if only for the first story. B

The Initiative #4 - This issue was ok. I'm kind of getting fatigued by reading the same stories over and over and just having them be a bit different. This had good points though. The art was terrible. Absolutely disgusting. C

Image
Image had a light week. They brought it though. They were the Publisher of the Week with an A average.

Sidekick Summer Spectacular #1 - This book is really funny. I wish that there were a Sidekick ongoing. This issue had everything that you could possibly want: bondage, transvestites, retarded superheroes. A

DC
DC had a mixed week. They had the Shit Book of the Week in Black Canary #2. They maintained a B-/B average over 7 books.

Robin #164 - This story was really good. It's the setup for the fight that will begin in the next issue. It should be cool. I'm even starting to kind of like Killa Nilla.

A little.

A real little.

Don't push it that's as far as I'm moving on that one.

Speaking of things about the book that I'm never thrilled about, let's talk about the art. I can describe it in 1 word: shitty. It's seriously bad. This issue would've gotten an A if not for the art. B

All Flash #1 - If this is any indication of the level of quality that we can expect during the Waid run then all of us that are reading it should be very happy. This was a great story. I LOVED what he did to Inertia. I'm interested in Wally and what happens next. The art was good but jumpy with the artist shifting.

Can anyone fill me in on the imagery from the last few pages? I was kind of lost. A

Amazons Attack #4 - This was ok. I'm beginning to tire of the story a bit. It feels to me like it could be over by now but it just isn't. Woods continues to underwhelm on art. B

Countdown #41 - This was ok. It wasn't their best issue yet. I'm still very happy with it overall though. Dennis Calero's art was pretty shitty. It kind of takes a lot to stand out as a 'bad' art week on this book and this did.

I really liked the Rogues stuff. They need more pages immediately. Their story fascinates me.

Someone needs to kill Jimmy Olsen. Absent an upcoming death, I may be forced to become a comic book character and kill him myself. Jesus Christ! Who cares?

Mary Marvel is the shit and deserves WAAAY more than 1 page. Hey, let's give her Jimmy Olsen's pages! Who's the person watching her through the purple crystal? Anyone???

I liked the Monitor Jim, Donna Troy, and Jason Todd stuff. I don't like that they've named Monitor Jim "Bob" though. I'll choose to ignore it.

I hate the whole Holly Robinson "Hangin' with Ms. Quinn" storyline. It just isn't interesting to me.

The Karate Kid needs to wax off out of my conciousness. I don't care about him at all.

The backup story about the Multiverse was cool as usual. I'm going to miss these when they switch over in a few weeks.

I'm left feeling that there are a lot of elements of Countdown that I really like and some that I'm not into. It seems that my opinion of each issue depends on the mix of the two.

C

Black Canary #2 - Yeah, I don't know about this one. The first issue was entertaining enough. This issue though - not so good. I'm rather annoyed with the writing and the art.

The art - There are several panels where Wonder Woman looks like an alien. People's head just don't hang in such opposition to the flow of their bodies. Merlyn's eyes change color on nearly every page. Does he have magic eye color changing powers that I don't know about? Black Canary looks like Victoria Jackson in several panels. This would be fine if it weren't in stark contrast to the cheesecake-ish panels where she's entirely ripped. In still another group of panels, she looks like a cross between Paris Hilton and Gwenyth Paltrow. Honestly, I could nitpick the art for another two pages. Let's just say it sucks and move on.

The writing - My apologies to Tony Bedard's parents, this isn't going to be very nice.

Is it really necessary to hammer home what a sexist prick he thinks Ollie is in the flashbacks? I think it's pretty clear. The ass-grabbing comment was unnecessary. Ollie is incorrigible, but he's not a jerkoff.

Also in the flashbacks, he portrays Ollie as very bumbling and I'm not really interested in that picture of him. I like the competent Ollie that we're used to. The scene where he has all of his goofy trick arrows spread out on the floor and he's fumbling around for the right one is insulting.

The scene with the League of Assassins is terrible. There is so much hacky exposition that you could actually choke to death reading it. It just sucked.

Then, the League of Assassins invade Sin's high security school for bad kids(really) to kidnap her and she kicks all of their asses at the same time. This isn't nearly enough of an amazing feat for an 8 year-old so she ended the scene by beating up the police and crying.

Then, she gets kidnapped by Merlyn dressed up as Ollie. Oh by the way, Merlyn has an entirely new eye color again when he kidnaps Sin.

This was not good by any stretch of the imagination. I care about the characters so I'm inclined to continue with it but I'm uncertain about it.

F

JLA #11 - Holy shit! I nearly dropped this book because of how bad it has been. This issue was amazing.

Meltzer's writing is spectacular here. The basic story is that Red Arrow and the Chicken Lady (how could I possibly remember all those characters' names?) are trapped in the rubble of a fallen building that also happens to be under water. The narration and the dialogue felt breathless, disorienting, and at times desperate. I know just what he was going for and I picked it up as he laid it down.

The art in this was fanF*ckingTastic. Seriously, the pencils, the colors, and the layouts were world class. I don't think that I've felt this positive about the art in a single issue since Maleev did New Avengers #26. A

The Spirit #8 - I love Darwyn Cooke's stuff so much that if he wrote and drew a book called "Fred gets beaten with a pipe wrench for 22 pages," I'd read it. This is so funny and so pretty. I love the schlocky goodness of it all. They save the city and their own lives by UNPLUGGING the nuclear bomb. That's hysterical - I don't care what anybody says. A

This Week In Comics for July 11, 2007 - A Fred Review

I had a pretty mixed week. The Book of the Week was Superman Confidential #5. The Shit Book of the Week was Omega Flight #4. I gave out 3 "F"s this week. I normally give out 1. I chose Omega Flight amongst all of them because I had the highest hopes for it initially. The Publisher of the Week was DC.

DC
DC had a really great week. I had 7 DC books and they had an average directly between A- and A. They were the Publisher of the Week and had the Book of the Week in Superman Confidential #5.

Superman Confidential #5 - How can you go wrong with Darwyn Cooke and Tim Sale? Well? I'm waiting for an answer. In truth, I don't think that it's possible. This is awesome. It's Superman and it's a story about Kryptonite. On paper, I shouldn't give a shit. The thing is though, Cooke and Sale are doing a hell of a job with it. Sale's pencils are some of my favorite out there right now and Cooke's writing is spectacular. Cooke has actually made Superman sympathetic and likeable to me. We've discussed Superman a lot around here, and I always end up at some approximation of "I don't like him. He's too powerful and he's a douche." In this though, he learns of his vulnerability to Kryptonite and it actually makes him happy that he could possibly die because it makes him feel more human and makes his life feel more precious. That's powerful stuff and I applaud Cooke for finding an angle that I'm actually interested in. I suppose that this proves that my usual disdain for Superman is more disdain for the writers that have written him and the stories that they've chosen to tell.

Cooke's writing goodness doesn't stop with the story or dialogue either. The narratives are also fantastic. One example from this issue would be: "Above it all stands Gallo, a dark prince in a mad kingdom." This statement wrapped his also impressive background narration about Las Vegas. It worked flawlessly. It would seem that some writers plot well, some write narrative descriptions well, and some write dialogue well. The best can do all three of these things. Cooke is such a writer.

I've got one more "Cooke is amazing" example for you. Ma Kent is telling Superman that she worries about him but that it worth it. She says this:

"Of course I worry for you. I'm your mother. But I'm so proud of you. I see the good that you do. And that all seems worth one old woman's worry."

How fucking good is that! Wonderful indeed.

I don't want to sell Sale short here (heh). It's just easier for me to go on about Cooke's talents than it is for me to do the same for Sale's. Sale has a unique and unbelievably excellent style. The comic book industry would do well for itself to find a way to get more work out of him. Maybe they make a deal with someone to add hours to the day????? Satan? Anyone? Who's coming with me? Ah, nevermind. A+

Green Arrow Year One #1 - This was really good. I've been very excited for this book and it delivered. There were some things that I was slightly annoyed by in terms of timeline (example: stealth bomber). Otherwise though, it was very good. I can't wait to see where this goes. I love Jock's art. It was fantastic. A-

Countdown #42 - This was really good. I'm glad that I'm reading it. I'm going to go through it point by point as I have nearly every week so far. It may seem that I like it less than I say that I do. This isn't the case. I don't hate anything about it. I just feel like there are opportunities for it to be better.

I was glad to see the Rogues stuff. I liked it.

I liked the Mary Marvel stuff as I always do but I am beginning to wish that they were doing something bigger with her. A team-up with the Riddler is kind of petty. I realize though that it is early.

The stuff with Holly Robinson is a bit better I guess. I've never really warmed up to this storyline. The whole Harley Quinn as an Amazon thing is not really to my liking.

I love the Jason Todd/Donna Troy/Monitor Jim story. I honestly wish that it got more pages each week. Ideally, Monitor Jim would've had a bit more dialogue. The guys they talked to about Ray Palmer were kind of annoying.

Karate Kid - now there's a guy that I never want to see again. He is the only thing that I come close to hating in all of this. I just don't care.

The Jimmy Olsen stuff is either becoming more palatable or the reduction in pages devoted to it is serving it well. Snarky? never

The History of the Multiverse backup was cool again. I like that DC is doing this and that they did expository backstories in 52. It makes it easier to stay abreast of all of the history.

The art was probably better than it has been yet.

One last thing, the Ball Park/Mad Magazine ad is the most annoying advertisement in the history of advertising. B+

Green Lantern #21 - This was really good. I'm actually thinking of going back and reading some Green Lantern. That being said, I don't like any of them but Hal. There were two or three distinct moments in the book when I wanted to kick Guy Gardner in the face. The art was cool. Yaaay Sinestro Corps War! A

JSA #7 - This was really cool. Nearly all of the suck of the Lightning Saga is gone. There was the small Superman and Starman thing that shot out from it, but it wasn't too bad. I'd say that JSA is back. Citizen Steel is cool. I'm really interested in his story. I'm not sure that I even mind that he's the 715th member of the team. The art was good. A

Fables #63 - This was good. It was more preparation for the coming war. It's all still setup for the big collision. B+

DMZ #21 - This was really good. It consistently delivers every month. I won't even consider reading it in trade. A

Marvel
Marvel had a terrible week with a C- average. They had the Shit Book of the Week in Omega Flight #4.

Deadpool GLI Summer Fun Spectacular - Well, "Spectacular" was the right word for this. I nearly didn't buy this because it was the GLI and I wasn't all that interested. I am really glad that I did. It was hysterical and silly. I genuinely can't recall having as much fun reading a comic in a while. On the art front, some of it was pretty bad. This one shot had 4 fun stories for under $4. nice. The best part was getting to see Deadpool without PikaCable. A

New Avengers #32 - This story really good. I'm excited for the whole Skrull thing now which is a complete turnabout in my opinion.

The art blows though. I know people like it but there were several pages during the crash where I couldn't even make out what was going on. I know its a plane crash and it's suppossed to be confusing but a little clarity never killed anyone. C

Nova #4 - This was cool. I enjoyed it. I'm interested in seeing where this goes next. That alone says something about the high quality level of the book. This isn't a story written for "my tastes", at least not on paper. B

Omega Flight #4 - So this was not so good. Ok, let's not mince words - it sucked. hard. I spent most of the book questioning why I was reading it. It left me with questions and pissy comments. Here they go:
1) Is the word 'canuck' a slur? I always thought that it was. I'm hoping that one of the Canadians around here can set me straight. If it is, why is Marvel using it in their books?
2) What's up with Sasquatch? I can't even take him seriously. Every single time he's on panel I laugh. He looks like he was assembled from hair removed from bathtub drains all over Canada. Is he indeed the Pube Monster?
3) What the fuck? Demons? Seriously? Were all of the enchanted polar bears being held back by editorial?
4) I was really excited for this book when it was announced. It has turned out to be unfounded excitement. I am sad for you Canada. You may have universal healthcare, but Omega Flight REALLY sucks. (there should be like 10,000 smilies here - don't take it personal)

Ick. F

Ultimate X-Men #84 - This was better than it has been. Overall though, Kirkman's run has been disappointing. I'm either becoming tired of the X-Men or I'm becoming tired of bad X-Men stories. Sadly, there hasn't been too much difference in either of those options lately. D+

WWH Gamma Corps #1 - Yeah, I know that it's my fault for buying it. This was horrid and from now on I'm only reading WWH, IH, and Front Lines (the first one was good). Mess from top to bottom. The character designs for the members of the Gamma Corps are some of the worst I've ever seen (that Rob Leifeld didn't do). F

X-Factor #21 - This was really good. I like it nearly every month. The Endangered Species backup was horrid. A

Anita Blake something something #1 - Total piece of shit. I'm never reading any Anita Blake stuff again. I fell asleep twice reading it. F

This Week In Comics for 7/5/2007 - A Fred Review

I had a pretty good week with 14 books that maintained a B+ average. The Publisher of the Week was Marvel. The Book of the Week was American Virgin #16. The Shit Book of the Week was All-Star Superman #8.

DC
I had 7 DC books with a B average. They had the Book of the Week in American Virgin #16 and the Shit Book of the Week in All-Star Superman #8.

American Virgin #16 - This is an outstanding book. It's slowly becoming one of my favorites. Adam Chamberlin's journey is exceptionally interesting to me. This is the second issue of the latest arc which turns his spiritual and metaphoric journey into an actual journey. He's traveling the world with a girl that he met a few issues ago and he's trying new things. I'm really into the concept of this book and the things that it makes me think about. And further, how could you not love the Iron Phallus festival? I really like Becky Cloonan's pencils. A+

Countdown #43 - This was the best issue of Countdown so far. I've really enjoyed Countdown so far so fact says a lot. I loved Bart's funeral. It was emotional, touching, and very well done. The video of him was a nice touch. I think that it's really easy to get dragged into this horrid maudlin place with a death/funeral/remember the life stories, and the team at DC skillfully avoided it. I genuinely enjoyed the shifting perspectives during the funeral. I think it was a cool idea and was executed quite well.

I'm intrigued by the Jason Todd, Donna Troy, Monitor Jim (I don't know his name) story. Why do they need to find Ray Palmer? Someone? Anyone?

Jimmy Olsen needs to die next. Sadly, I care so little about him that he could have a "great death" and it wouldn't really hold my interest.

The Rogues needs to stay together. They don't want to have to look for coke. They should just stick with Mirror Master.

Hey - where was Mary Marvel? Huh, huh? Where'd she go? I don't like that she was missing.

Why do I care about Holly Robinson? How can she spend this long away from Mr. Cooper? Why is Harley Quinn an Amazon now? Is she with the Amazons? I think so, but what the hell do I know?

The backup was good as usual.

The art had some problems as usual. A

Y The Last Man #57 - You ever read something that you want to talk about but you can't because you know half the damn people that read it do so in trade? This is my problem here. So, no need to scream "SPOILERS" because there won't be any. I will say that Vaughn sure knows how to gather large piles of shit to throw on the fan. Excellent. A

Scalped #7 - This was probably the best issue of Scalped so far. This story was told from the perspective of Chief Red Crow. It was an interesting approach. It was also a risky approach. Red Crow is one of the "bad guys", but Aaron told the story from his perspective and actually shed a lot of light on who he is. It could've been a disaster as it's easy for stories like this to fail miserably. Jason Aaron may be relatively new* on the comics scene, but I can see a future ahead of him.

* He doesn't even have a wiki page yet. I just checked.

The art is still a bit troubled. A-

Black Canary #1 - This was pretty good. It was interesting enough to keep buying it. The art didn't blow me away or anything but overall this was good. B

Detective Comics #834 - This was surprisingly decent. I didn't really care for the first half of this story but the conclusion was far better than it. The art was touchy in places. B-

All-Star Superman #8 - Wow! What a piece of shit. I seriously had to force myself to finish this. I flipped through the book 3 times while I was reading it just to count how many pages were left. I hate Bizarro and the Underverse and the whole dumb concept. You need a fucking decoder ring to understand the dialogue. Quitely's pencils were excellent as usual, but not nearly enough to save it. F

Marvel
Marvel had an awesome week. I had 5 of their books and they had almost an A- average. They were the Publisher of the Week.

Fallen Son Captain America #5 - This was really great. I had read it already last week so I wanted to read it again and grade it and review it in the context of this week's books. I am certainly glad that I did. This issue was the Cap funeral issue. The speech by Falcon was very touching. The words by Tony were as well. Very nice finish Mr. Loeb. Cassaday's pencils were fantastic, especially on the spreads. A

Punisher MAX #49 - This was really good. This was an interesting new twist on the usual "find bad guys and then kill bad guys" storyline. I enjoyed it quite thoroughly. It was very intense. A-

Daredevil Battlin' Jack Murdock #2 - This issue was a bit of a drop off from the first issue but this was still very good. It seems like Wells really gets it. Jack Murdock's self-loathing and shame seem realistic and (frankly) warranted. He also captures the tension between the Murdocks and the parallels between them very well. The art was pretty good, there were some spots that didn't work well, but overall the pencils were well done. A-

Ms. Marvel #17 - This is a really fun book. I enjoy reading it. It isn't exceptionally deep or anything, but it's a good time. The art is good. A-

Dark Tower #6 - This series has been really great. I'm excited to see the next and final issue but will also be sad to see it end for now. The art is utterly amazing. Jae Lee and Richard Isanove may compliment each other as well as any other penciller and colorist that I've ever seen. A-

Runaways #27 - This was ok. I'm not overly-enthusiastic about Whedon's arc to this point but I'm sure that he'll turn it around. The art was horrible all around. The pencils and coloring just sucked. C

Image
I only had 1 Image book this week and it got a B.

The Astounding Wolf-Man #2 - I'm a bit torn about this. Part of me loved it and wants to ramble on about how cool it was, and another part of me wants to point out that this is Invincible with a werewolf. It's cool though. I'm in for the foreseeable future. Jason Howard's pencils are enjoyable. B

This Week In Comics for June 27, 2007

This was an odd week for comics. My books came in with a C+ average. There were some great books and a some shitty ones. Middle ground was hard to find. Book of the Week is JSA Classified #27. Publisher of the Week is Image. Shit Book of the Week is Thunderbolts #115. I still have to get to Iron Fist #6. I'll post that later in the week.

DC Comics
DC had a very mixed week. Despite having the Book of the Week in JSA Classified #27, they had only a C average. Teen Titans was the Shit Book of the Week and Wonder Woman wasn't far behind it. Amazons Attack was pretty great, but Countdown was only middling. What can I say? Some had it and some didn't.

JSA Classified #27 - I loved this issue. I have the hugest man-crush on Ted Grant. Holy fuck! How cool is he? This story was awesome from start to finish. I loved the sequence in the beginning with Ted in high school and the whole thing that happened to his parents. How fucking sad was that! No wonder he's so tough and mysterious. I loved the scene in the bar where he was beating the fuck out of everyone in sight to get to Joe the Slob. He's so badass! And then, the strip club scene. That was awesome! He had the funniest line of the year. He was talking about having gone to the strip club before and he says: "Hey crimefighters gotta unwind, right?" Laughed. My. Ass. Off. I liked his silly fight with the Brutal Brothers and the douchebaggery of the Sportmaster. I loved, loved, loved the fact that he equated the Sportmaster with his father and gave him a second chance. I was blown away by how great the ending was. The final scene is Ted at his father's grave telling him that he doesn't forgive him but that he's beginning to understand him a bit better. Awesome. All around awesome. Perfect story from Frank Tieri.

The art was also nice. A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Amazons Attack #3 - This was good. I wish that I knew which order to read all of the crossovers in though. It's kind of annoying when I start with this one and get tipped off on plot points from WW and TT. I liked it though. I'm very interested in the next installment of this. The art was good but nothing spectacular. A-

Wonder Woman #10 - Some stories end with a bang and some with a whimper. This one ended with Jodie Picoult leaving a steaming pile of shit on the kitchen table. This just sucked. It wasn't as bad as her earlier issues. I didn't even find it insulting - so that's new. The ending though was so manufactured and melodramatic that Picoult should be fucking ashamed of herself. Honestly, I can see now how she works for Lifetime. The pencils also sucked. F

Teen Titans #48 - It's been quite some time since I've seen art this bad. I have a proposition for all of you. If you meet or happen to know Al Barrionuevo, I need you to ask him this: do you draw with your penis? It's like he has no control over the pencil. It looks like he slapped ink on something and crudely smacked it into paper over and over until he could begin to see what it is.

The story was not so great. It seems like Amazons Attack is beginning to hurt the books around it. The mini itself is good, but the ripples it's causing in the pond seem to be on the verge of knocking the boat over. This issue starkly contrasted the greatness of the last. F

Countdown #44 - This was good. It was a bit weak compared to some of the previous weeks but overall I enjoyed it. The History of the Multiverse backup was fun again. The stuff with Monarch and the Foreskinner needs to go away, it's just dumb. The Mary Marvel stuff confused me a bit but I did like what I got. It would be interesting to hear someone summarize it and who all they were talking about. The Jimmy Olsen stuff was weaker than it's been and that's really saying something. The Rogues stuff was cool. Why is Holly Robinson with the Amazons? That is who they were right? C

Marvel Comics
Marvel had a mixed week with a C average. They had the Shit Book of the Week in Thunderbolts #115.

X-Men #200 - I've got a question for all of you. Are the doctors messing with my fucking medication again or is Jean Gray on the cover of this book? I'm almost certain that she's dead. I'm pretty certain about that. It's one thing when the cover doesn't happen in the book, and it's another far worse thing when the cover has DEAD PEOPLE on it. She didn't die last week. It has been a while. Theoretically, the X-editors know right?

Onto the story, or as I call it - the problems. This story sucked. I would honestly rather have my scrotum fastened to the side of a moving train with a nail gun than ever read anything with Gambit or Cannonball in it. This has the extra special benefit of having both of them as well as Rogue in all of her famed "mah" glory. Luckily, she seems to die at the end of the issue. This is a problem too because she was killed by Mystique (whom Iceman fucked - ick). Seriously, Mystique as the leader of the Marauders? She's evil again? Yeah, I get it. People don't change. Stop trying to tickle my ass with a feather.

The art was damn near a capital offense in both the main story and the backup. F

Thunderbolts #115 - So it was bound to happen. Much like the soap in a Turkish prison, this book is DROPPED. I'm not helping Ellis pay his rent with superhero stuff anymore. Sorry, but I just can't do it. I nearly quit reading it in the FIRST PANEL. Really though, I did. Venom said this:

"I want to rip bite their heads off and shove my tongue down their neck holes so I can lick out their hearts."

How fucking hacky is that? Honestly, if not for Transmet and a few other things, I'd be demanding that Warren Ellis' computer, typewriter, and all other equipment that can be used to write scripts be destroyed. I want to lick out your heart because I'm the '90s. Hrrrmmmmmmm.

asshole

It wasn't necessary to turn Bullseye into a vegetable. They set up this whole "prisoner in his own body thing" that was really lame. It reminded me of the video for Metallica's One. the main difference being that I wouldn't say: "If I had arms I'd kill myself"; I'd actually say: "If I had to keep reading this, I'd kill myself."

Fuck this shit. F

Ultimate X-Men #83 - Christ Jesus, who drew this mess? And the coloring? Did they use a Charcoal-infused LiteBright? Blech! The story was better than the art. Of course that's similar to being the smartest kid in Special Ed - it's not much of an accomplishment and it's not much to brag about. D

World War Hulk Front Lines #1 - I'm glad that I picked this up. This is far better than Civil War Front Lines at this point. Way to go Jenkins. B+

World War Hulk X-Men #1 - Apparently Christos Gage's name is Greek for "I can't write for shit." It was a mistake to pick this up. I should've known it. It was terrible, just terrible, from start to finish. When did the Hulk pick up witty banter? I've missed his quips to this point. On top of this, the story wasn't very interesting and was incredibly heavy-handed. I felt like Gage thinks of me as a 6 year old. F

Cable & Deadpool #42 - Is Cable dead? I really hope so. He needs to go away. The parts with Deadpool were great. C

Black Panther #28 - This was disappointing. I like Black Panther. I talk about it month after month. This story just wasn't that good. D+

X-Factor #20 - This was really great. I enjoyed it. Month after month this is one of the best books on the rack. A

Criminal #7 - Excellent. Ed Brubaker is bound and determined to supplant Bendis in my mind. He's doing a fine job of it. I cannot wait for the next one. Sean Phillips' art was good. A

Daredevil #98 - Great as usual. Brubaker is the man. Lark's pencils were great too. A

Image Comics
Image had an awesome week with an A average. They were the Publisher of the Week. Each of their books contended for Book of the Week. Sadly, none of them made it.

The Walking Dead #38 - This was excellent. The entire issue was awesome. I loved it all. I especially loved the tension in it. I spent most of the issue on the edge of my seat like I would in a horror movie repeating "get the fuck out of there" over and over again. Charlie Adlard's pencils were awesome as usual. A

Invincible #43 - This was a really great issue. I loved it. The stuff with Mark and his brother was really cool. Also, the issue ended with Atom Eve making a direct play for Mark. They could be together soon. That's so cool. I've been hoping for that. The art was cool. A

The Nightly News #6 - This was a fitting and spectacular ending to what has been a tremendous mini. I urge all of you to buy the trade. I cannot stress enough how much I enjoyed this. Hickman is refreshing and original and I cannot wait for Pax Romana or Red Mass From Mars. A

Dynamite Entertainment
Dynamite had a B average this week. I only had 1 book from them. 1 is still more than usual.

The Boys #8 - This was good. I'm enjoying it. I'm glad it's back. Ennis' story is developing and intriguing me. I was a little bugged by some of the content as it relates to the treatment of the gay characters in the story but Ennis did make an effort to redeem it in the end. I'm stuck between saying it was too much too late and saying that it's a story about bad people and unsurprisingly they behave in ways that many people wouldn't be proud of.

Robertson's pencils are great. B

This Week In Comics for June 20, 2007 - A Fred Review

This was a great week for comics. I'm short a few titles because of some shipping damage and sell-outs at my lcs but I'm assured that I can get the missing ones on Friday. OK, down to business. I had 7 books with an A- average this week. The Publisher of the Week was Marvel. The Book of the Week was Captain America #27. The Shit Book of the Week is The Spirit #7. I actually liked it, but there has to be a Shit Book. Sorry Spirit, I know it sucks and I don't like it either, but thems the breaks.

Marvel
Marvel had a great week with a solid A average. They were the Publisher of the Week. They also had the Book of the Week.

Captain America #27 - Ok let's run this down again. So, we're going to kill the main character in the book and 3 months later it will still kick ass? Yes. That is exactly what Ed Brubaker has done. This was an excellent issue. I loved it.

Brubaker is GOLD writing Bucky. It seriously works very well. If Marvel announced today that he was writing a book about Bucky's adventures as a chef, I'd buy it. I loved all of the Bucky parts in this. I loved the Black Widow backstory and fight stuff. I loved the plan to get Cap's shield. I absolutely loved Bucky with the old lady in the museum.

The Sharon Carter stuff was great. Her suicidal thoughts are reasonable and realistic. Her interactions with the Falcon were awesome. So was the whole Sharon and Falcon on the path of Bucky story.

The art was awesome as usual. A+

The Incredible Hulk #107 - Oh wow! That was good. I really enjoyed it. I filled in gaps and also went ahead in time like you frequently find in events. Oddly in this case, it didn't feel superfluous. I loved all of the stuff with Hercules and the Hulk. I loved the stuff with Amadeus and the Hulk and also his scenes with Hercules and Angel. I really liked the Namor/Namora storyline. I loved that Goliath's nephew was going into Manhattan to watch Iron Man get killed. The art was ok. A

Quick note: I'll be suing Marvel for stealing my likeness. The guy in the boat who says: "He'll tear them down from their golden palaces." is clearly based on me.

Ultimate Spider-Man #110 - Holy crap. Bendis is the man. This was a really fun and fitting conclusion to the Ultimate Knights arc. I liked it a lot. I'm glad that Bendis has gotten the Kingpin out of the picture for now, without anyone killing him.

This is Mark Bagley's last full issue and I'll be sad to see him go. It's the end of an era. I'm sure that Stuart Immonen's arrival at the midway point of the next issue will be great as well. A

DC Comics
DC had a prety good week with a B+ average. They had the Shit Book of the Week in The Spirit #7.

Robin #163 - This was a really great issue. It was cool, exciting, and frankly very touching. I'm so glad month after month that I began reading this book. Thanks to iFanboy (Josh specifically I think) for that. This issue was so good that I almost didn't notice how bad the art was. Notice the word "almost". The art blows. It's just not good. Adam Beechen is telling great stories though. A-

Flash #13 - This was a really good issue. I enjoyed it a lot. I liked the whole "hero stands when his legs are gone" thing. It was a nice touch and I like that they carried it through to the end.

This brings up an issue that we all have discussed before though. The Flash is motherfucking confusing. Seriously. Why was Bart's girlfriend calling him Wally? I've heard that he's coming back as the Flash(Wally), but what the? How does that work? There were a few others but fuck my head hurts. A- (word play not intentional)

Countdown #45 - This was pretty good. Although, it was probably the shakiest issue for me so far.

Counting Down The Points
1. I thought that this week would be a good opportunity to work the Rogues in but they were nowhere to be found.
2. Jimmy Olsen's description of the New Gods and Kirby's Fourth World made me wonder. It made me wonder how Jack Kirby could be both so gifted and so incredibly high at the same time. Well, good for him.
3. I could've done without Holly Robinson's audition for Hangin' With Mr. Wendel.
4. And I HATE HATE the ForeSkinners. I'm exceptionally perturbed that she's going to hook up with the guy from an '80s cartoon.
5. I liked Donna Troy kicking ass.
6. I liked the Monitor drama. Their in-fighting and intrigue fascinates me.
7. The Karate Kid can lick my ass. You're not selling that to me. I don't care how well he prunes a banzai tree.
8. The History of the Multiverse still fascinates me.

When I write it all out like that, it seems like I disliked it. I didn't. It just wasn't great. Also, the art was kinda crappy. B+

The Spirit #7 - What a weird issue! I'm glad that this wasn't Darwyn Cooke. I would be really disappointed. This issue contained 3 stories by 3 different teams. They varied in degree of quality. Walter Simonson's story with Chris Sprouse and Karl Story was quite good. I enjoyed it. Jimmy Palmiotti's story with Jordi Bernet was ok, but the art was beautiful. It wasn't Cooke beautiful but it was great. Finally, the story written and drawn by Kyle Baker sucked. I had a hard time finishing it.

Overall, not bad and better than most. B

This Week in Comics for June 13, 2007 - A Fred Review

This was a great week for comics. My 8 books had an average that was nearly an A-. The Book of the Week was Fables #62. The Shit Book of the Week was New Avengers #31. DC was the Publisher of the Week. I had only 1 book in my stack that I was unhappy with. It was a surprising week indeed.

DC Comics
DC was the Publisher of the Week with an A average. It was one hell of a week from DC. They also had the Book of the Week in Fables #62.

Countdown #46 - This was really good. I liked it with a few notable exceptions.

Liked

1. The Jimmy Olsen stuff (most of it)
2. The Mary Marvel stuff (most of it was excellent)
3. The Rogues are always a lot of fun
4. Ths stuff with the Monitors and Donna Troy and Jason Todd

Disliked

1. Darkseid's assitant's name was Sleeze. It was just a bit hokey and dumb for me
2. Mary Marvel has to fight a DEAD BABY MONSTER - yeah seriously, a dead baby monster. Apparently, Palmiotti and Gray are gearing up for their new gig writing lyrics for Cannibal Corpse
3. Forerunner is a terribly designed character and that scene didn't really end either

The art was better than it has been. B+

Green Arrow #75 - Holy crap what a way to go! This was an amazing issue. I will miss this book, but at least Winick knows how to craft an ending. Ollie is out as the mayor of Star City, the recall election has been called off, Ollie's mayoral advisor has been made the mayor, Nocerta has been screwed, Deathstroke has been defeated, the Star City wall has come down, and Ollie proposed to Dinah. It was an action packed and amazing issue. The art was pretty great as usual. A

Fables #62 - This was an extremely good issue. I love this Flycatcher storyline and I'm glad that it will continue without Boy Blue. I had worried that it might die prematurely for lack of his help. In this issue, Fly hooks up with the Foresworn Knight and gets his magic armor, the sword Excalibur, and becomes a knight. He will be traveling back to the homelands to take his kingdom back with magic that makes it impossible for him to lose unless he becomes impure. I also really enjoyed the Prince Charming scenes where he gave Hansel his ultimatum to the Adversary. It was a great scene and it showed Charming's strength of character. I really enjoyed it. The art was great as usual. A+

DMZ #20 - DMZ is such an astonishingly good book. It really delivers issue after issue. I can't even imagine reading it in trades. I can't wait 6 months to get more story. It's just so great. I think that the artist on this was a fill-in but there were only a few spots where it was easy to tell. Overall, awesome as usual. A

Marvel Comics

Marvel had a B+ average for the week. The average was dragged down by the only bad book in my stack today. It was the suprising Shit Book of the Week in New Avengers #31.

New Avengers #31 - I'm not sure how to go on this. The issue itself had some great moments. The banter between Hawkeye and Spider-Man was funny. I liked the competitiveness. The story was interesting. I'm afraid of what it means though. If Jessica Jones' baby is a Skrull and Elektra is a Skrull then it's only a short hop to there being a full-scale behind the scenes Skrull takeover. I'm afraid that they will use it to roll back the SHRA, the Initiative, and a bunch of other things. It almost feels like there's an inevitable team-up to save the real Tony and Reed coming. Jones' baby might not be a Skrull though and it may not mean that. I may be overreacting. The art sucked balls again. Leinel Yu should get a job illustrating anime. People would appreciate his speed lines there. D+

World War Hulk #1 - This was awesome. I'm not usually big on the gigantic fight issues. It really worked here. The Hulk and Iron Man had one of the greatest fights I've seen. The Hulk really fucked him up. It was so awesome when Tony injected him with the nanobots, took him down, and shot missles at him and it just PISSED the Hulk OFF. Oddly, Romita's pencils were a bit off in a few places. They were good overall but I really don't like the way that he draws the Hulk. This was a lot of fun. So great, looking forward to #2. A

Cable & Deadpool #41 - This was really good. I was surprised. I was kind of dreading it because I knew that Cable was in it. It was awesome though. The Cable parts weren't that great, but they didn't completely suck like they normally do. It also helped that all of the Deadpool scenes were hysterical. I love Nicieza's Deadpool and I really hope that Cable is the "major death" in the X-Men event. This book needs to be just Deadpool. The art was the same as always, neither great nor terrible. A

Nova #3 - This was awesome. I loved it. This was the second half of the story of Nova's time visiting Earth. He fought the Thunderbolts and more or less won. He fought with his parents. He met up with Penance, who was in New Warriors with him as Speedball. That was a very interesting scene. I've been complaining that they're not doing enough with Penance and I was happy to see this. Penance asked him to join the Initiative and he decided to leave the Earth instead. I liked the art. I am worried though that this will begin to suck with him going back into space. I'm going to try to keep the faith though because I never expected this book to be any good in the first place. A

The Queen - A Fred Review

The Queen

I tend to be a bit hard on movies. There have been thousands of them made. I've seen hundreds myself. There are usually so many that have done what they're trying to do better that I can't help but negatively compare the movie to the ones that have come before. This was not an issue with The Queen. I had the pleasure of watching it last night and I can say that I've seen few do what they tried to do better. It was absolutely astonishing in a variety of ways.

The Queen tells the story of Tony Blair's election, the death of Princess Diana shortly after, and the period of mourning leading up to her funeral. The story is told magnificiently. The script was written by Peter Morgan, who also wrote The Last King of Scotland. It was directed by Stephen Frears. I mention the writer and director together because the story is so well done. The pacing was magnificient. The performances that the director got out of his cast were incredible. I'm actually kind of interested in seeing the script for this because I'd like to see what the contributions of each were. Has the writer written in all of the subtext that can be read from the faces of the actors that the director is directing? Is it there under the surface and the director has just pulled it out? I don't know the answers to these questions but I am quite interested. The symbolism of the deer was quite moving.

The acting was superb. Each player in the movie was incredible.

Helen Mirren played Queen Elizabeth so expressively. You could literally gather as much from her face as her lines. There's an array of unspoken, understated strength and conflict that she was able to successfully emote without saying a word. It takes a lot to sell a performance as a largely known living public figure and she sells it. I believed it every second of the film.

Michael Sheen was fantastic in the role of Tony Blair. Many of the same compliments that I've paid Helen Mirren also apply. So many things come through in his performance without actually being said. You can tell that he's a guy who respects the monarchy because it's a tradition and it's part of being British. This is why he tries again and again to save the Queen from herself. You can also feel how utterly unprepared he feels for all of this in that he's just taken office and all of this happens.

James Cromwell was astounding in the role of Prince Phillip. Phillip is somewhat reknowned for being a douche. Cromwell's Phillip was a perfect douche in every way imaginable.

Alex Jennings played Prince Charles and did a hell of a job. Prince Charles isn't traditionally a sympathetic character. You would think that this would be even more true in the telling of this story. However his performance, and the writing, actually made me feel for the guy. I didn't hate him for the first time in my life. Was he still a calculating asshole? Sure he was, but he did a good enough job to make me forget how much of an asshole I've always thought that he was for at least an hour and a half.

This was an excellent movie. I actually plan to watch it again soon. If I were to grade it, I would give it an A+.

Fred's This Week in Comics for June 6, 2007

This was a very mixed week. Some of my books were great. Daredevil Battlin' Jack Murdock #1 and Countdown #47 fought it out for Book of the Week and Daredevil Battlin' Jack Murdock #1 won. DC took Publisher of the Week honors. Then there were some really shitty books. New Warriors #1 and Invincible #42 fought like dogs on the lawn over the title of Shit Book of the Week until I turned the hose on them and declared New Warriors #1 the winner.

Marvel
Marvel had a C+/B- average this week. They had both the Book of the Week in Daredevil Battlin' Jack Murdock #1 and the Shit Book of the Week in New Warriors #1.

Daredevil Battlin' Jack Murdock #1 - This was awesome. I love it. If this issue is any indication, this mini tells the story of Matt Murdock's early life up to and including the death of his father from the viewpoint of Matt's father Battlin' Jack Murdock. It looks like Zeb Wells has some interesting thoughts and a rich field of ideas from which he has the chance to craft an excellent story. I'm intrigued by the possiblities of this. I'm honestly intrigued by their relationship in general. Specifically, I'm interested in the similarities between the two of them and how Jack shaped Matt into the man without fear.

The art by Carmine Di Giandomenico was excellent as well. A+

New Warriors #1 - Holy flippin donkey wang! Someone really knows how to make me vow to never again read a book. That's right Kevin Grevioux, I'm talking about you. This was horrid. Seriously, floggings should be going on right now.

Let's get to the problems. I nearly closed the book, went upstairs, piled all my comics in a heap, and burned them when I saw the day-glo New Warriors tag that they left for the police. The writing was hacky. The dialogue brought out performances that were less convincing than that of a heroin-addicted porn star with the shakes. So, needless to say I was bored and agitated.

And then the motherfucking kicker happened. The handsome guy that Sofia had a date with? Yeah, it was motherfucking Barnell Bohusk. Yeah, that one. AKA Beak from Grant Morrison's New X-Men. Apparently he lost his powers in House of M(not that I can recall him having powers outside of making people lose their breakfast) and became Hot Guy - leader of the new new New Warriors.

The art also sucked. Bite me. Never again. F

Avengers Initiative #3 - I didn't really like this. I didn't hate it either though. It was ok. It certainly wasn't as good as either of the first two. I don't care about Komodo. I really don't. She's not interesting to me. Also, the pro-reg people just seem like bigger fuckheads with every passing moment. It's beginning to feel a bit too asymmetrical. C-

Ms. Marvel #16 - This was really fun. I enjoyed it. This is a cool story and I'm excited to see where it goes. A

Omega Flight #3 - This wasn't all that good, I didn't like it. I'm torn as to whether or not to keep going. It's only a mini. D+

Punisher MAX #48 - This was great. I really like this story. This is the first arc that hasn't been 6 issues. I think that it will end in 7 next month. I really want to see how this ends. It looks like it might be great. A

DC
DC has a good week with a B+ average.

Countdown #47 - I've been so excited for Countdown every week and it has been paying off. This issue was certainly no exception. I was happy to see a bit less Jimmy Olsen than there has been. The Olsen stuff has actually been good, but it's nice to have a bit of a break. The Marvel family stuff is awesome. I don't see myself getting enough of it anytime soon. I'm glad that Mary Marvel has powers again. I wish that Black Adam hadn't given his powers to her but I'm sure that he'll eventually get them back. The multiverse backstory still kicks ass. I loved the Rogues stuff. I really dug the interaction between Trickster and the Pied Piper. The parts with the Monitors voting and debating was awesome. I really liked that a lot. This is the part of the storyline I really don't expect much from typically but I've been enjoying the hell out it.

Questions:
1) Who is Holly Robinson? Was she in fact on 21 Jump Street?
2) Why do all of the monitors have mutton chops?
3) If all of the monitors basically look the same, why is one of them a cyclops?

The art was serviceable. A+

Detective Comics #833 - I don't know what to say about this one. It had it moments. I guess that it was more good than bad. The story is kind of good and I'm interested in seeing where it goes next month. That being said, there were some things that took me out of the story. Is Gordon still the Police Commisioner? If so, why's he still interrogating suspects/interviewing witnesses? I don't really buy that. Also, there were some moments where the dialogue and narration got a bit sketchy. For instance, in Batman's narration he says: "I hope you still feel that way when you're the victim punk." That's just hacky and I expect more from Paul Dini. Also annoying, Loxias' shirt had an angry squinting happy face with bloody bullett hole in the forehead. Does the artist (Kramer) still live in the early '90s? I haven't seen one of those since then. (It may have been a Watchmen thing as Josh mentioned in his review but I immediately associated it with the other phenomenon) I don't know about this one. C-

Scalped #6 - This gets a bit better each month. It's really beginning to come together. I like it, I'm impressed, and I await #7 eagerly. A-

Image
Image had a below average week with a D+/C- average.

Invincible #42 - This issue only cost 1.99, and I still feel ripped off. That's odd enough. Even more odd though is the fact that I can't really recall feeling this about Invincible, or any Kirkman book for that matter, before. This was advertised as "New Reader Friendly". It wasn't just new reader friendly, it was totally unnecessary. It was a fucking ashcan that Kirkman and Image had the nerve to charge me for. There's the lightest excuse for a story that you could possibly imagine. It was entirely retarded. The worst part was that it took FOREVER to read it because of all of the exposition. I like it when a comic takes a bit of time to read, but this was boring.

Kiss my ass Kirkman. If you want to promote your book, don't charge me for it. Stop being an asshole and put out a free ashcan. F

Strange Girl #17 - Mixed results this week. This is the first time that I've even been moderately unhappy with an issue. I saw the news today that this series is ending at #18. This was the second to last issue. I feel like they tried to wrap things up too quickly here. I feel like too much happened, and it happened to fast, and that maybe there wasn't enough reverence paid to the things that happened. It was still good overall though.

I guess that this is how it goes though when a book sells like 3,000 copies a month. You all know how much I love this book and how incessantly I've promoted it. It's ending, and I am truly sad tonight. B

Dark Horse
Dark Horse had a rather low week as far as Dark Horse weeks have gone for me lately. Their average was a B.

Buffy #4 - This was pretty good. I liked it. It was a bit weak compared to some of the previous issues. I felt like the story was a bit choppy. It jumped around, or felt like it did, a bit more than I would've liked. It was still better than most things that come out in a month. It just wasn't as awesome as usual. The art was pretty(with small odd spots) as usual. B

I also had 2 more books and I don't expect them to affect weekly honors outcomes. I'm exhausted. I'll post them tomorrow.

Fred's This Week In Comics for 5/31/2007

This was a pretty good week. It was lighter than I would've liked but there were some solid performances. I had an overall average of B this week. The Book of the Week was JSA Classified #26. The Shit Book of the Week was X-23 Target #6. The Publisher of the Week was DC.

DC
DC had a very light but very great week. I had 3 DC books. They had an A- average. They gathered both the Book of the Week honors with JSA Classified #26 and the Publisher of the Week honors.

JSA Classified #26 - You ever read a book that reminds you why you read comics in the first place? That's how I felt about this book. I genuinely can't remember the last time that I picked an issue out of my stack and had more fun reading it. This was astonishingly good.

This was the first issue of a two-part story that features Wildcat on a campaign to take down an underworld crime ring. After winning a fight against Sportmaster, he discovers an underground club where they offer wagering on hero/villain fights. This issue ends with the leader of the crime ring conspiring against him. The next issue should have one hell of a fight in it.

This story really underscored a lot of the reasons that I love Wildcat so much. I'm not going to turn this into a 2000 word Wildcat essay or anything, but he's written very well in this. He's an honorable, noble, old school bad ass mother****er. There's a scene in the book where he's fighting Sportmaster and he's got him beat. He decides that he has to keep the fight going long enough to hurt him bad enough to make him retire. He doesn't do it because he's a bastard. He doesn't do it because he hates him. He does it because Sportmaster is past his prime and he fears that he'll soon be killed by one of the bad guys that he runs up against. I could keep going all night about how great he is but I'll spare you all that tonight.

The story was written by Frank Tieri. I haven't read too much of his stuff before and as such this is certainly my favorite story of his so far. The pencils were done by Matt Haley and they were great. The inking and coloring were done by Jerome Moore and Dave Baron and it was awesome. There were pages where the inking and coloring were world class examples of greatness.

A+

JSA #6 - You know, I've been really into this book so far. This issue had it's moments but overall wasn't so great. I feel the taint of JLA on it. Taint is, for several reasons, the most appropriate word.

Let's give the rundown. Ok, when the book launched I had absolutely no idea what was going on. It didn't matter though. It was fun and cool and I was into it. I began to understand it a little bit right before this crossover started. Then, I went back into total confusion. I was beginning to regain my footing until this one. There are large chunks of the plot that I can't even describe to you because I just don't ****ing get them.

This is an inherently bad crossover for one major reason: the number of characters involved. There are approximately 4000 characters between the JLA, JSA, and the Legion. It's crazy and this one ended with a little blurb about the next issue having a new member named Citizen Steel. What the ****? seriously.

The art was great. B-

Countdown #48 - This was really great. I'm really into Countdown to this point. I find myself spellbound during the Marvel family scenes and I'm also really into the Jimmy Olsen stuff. I really expected to not be into the Olsen stuff so that makes it even cooler. The History of the Multiverse backup story is really cool too as I don't know as much as I'd like to about the DCU.
A

Dynamite
Dynamite had itself a rare week and one of its books found its way to my stack. They had a B+ average.

The Boys #7 - When DC dropped The Boys months ago, there was much speculation about what exactly was in issue #7 that DC refused to ship. Well now that I've seen it I think that it's pretty clear. This book has always been glaringly more vulgar than anything else that they're putting out right now. This issue takes it even a bit further. One of the storylines in this issue deals with Tek-Knight. Tek-Knight is a superhero who has suddenly developed a compulsion to rape people, animals, and inanimate objects. Tek-Knight has a boy sidekick that he has to send away so that he won't rape him. Tek-Knight has a former boy sidekick named SwingWing. Who is Tek-Knight really? It's pretty obvious that Garth Ennis was taking a shot at Batman who is one of DC's premier marquee characters.

Mind you, I'm not complaining. I actually find it amusing from the standpoint of not being able to believe that Ennis thought that he could get away with it. Certainly it's also understandable that DC wouldn't want to publish this. Overall, I'm glad to see it back. B+

Marvel
Marvel had a very light and very mixed week this week. I had 3 Marvel books and they had a C average. They had the Shit Book of the Week in X-23 Target #6.

X-23 Target #6 - I am so glad that this is over. This mini started out pretty good. The first 5 were fun, pretty, and enjoyable. This issue was a piece of crap. It was such a dissatisfying ending. Stupid. F

Illuminati #3 - This was ok. It looked very nice. I wasn't so into the story but it didn't suck. C

Daredevil #97 - This is a great book. Brubaker's still the man. I like this storyline and I like the overall direction that his stories have taken. I can't wait to see how this story ends. Lark's art was beautiful as usual. A

Fred's This Week In Comics for May 2, 2007

What a weird week of Whedon this was. I've never had to struggle so hard to choose a favorite book. There's only been one week that I can remember where I liked more books by percentage. Typically I try to only award one A+ per week as my grades are curved and there should really only be one. I couldn't do it this week though. This week I handed out three of them. The Book of the Week was Runaways #26. It soothed all my worries that came out of Runaways #25 and also was a great Molly Hayes issue. The Shit Book of the Week, and the only one I disliked, was Shazam! The Monster Society of Evil #3. The Publisher of the Week was Marvel. Marvel may have been surpassed by Image and Dark Horse in the GPA department but the depths of their awesomeness could not be ignored this week. The overall average for the week was nearly an A-.

Marvel Comics
Wow, what a week for Marvel. They earned Book of the Week with Runaways #26. They were also the Publisher of the Week with a high A-/low A average.

Runaways #26 - Way to go Joss. I was really worried after reading Whedon's first issue on the Runaways(#25). This was exceptional though. I'm actually upset that he's only got 4 issues left now. What caused this strange transformation? One awesome fucking issue of Runaways. Whedon pulled it all together in this one. The Runaways fought the Kingpin and the Punisher thing was worked out awesome. These were my two largest concerns after the first one. He also made the thing they were stealing for the Kingpin actually belong to their parents meaning that they weren't really stealing it. This was my other concern.

I love Molly. She's such a great character and Whedon seems to really get her. I loved that she destroyed the Punisher and felt bad about it. I loved her resolving to never hit anyone with powers again and then asking whether or not ninjas have powers. I loved that she guessed how Old Lace saved Chase's life.

For the next issue, Nico has been sliced open by a ninja. Also, the Runaways have used the thing they stole for the Kingpin to go back in time. This would normally worry me but I'll give Whedon the benefit of the doubt. The art was better than average but not great. A+

Incredible Hulk #106 - It's always strange to read an issue of a comic where the title character doesn't really appear. It's stranger still to read an issue like that and actually enjoy it. This was one of those rare occasions. The Hulk only appeared in flashbacks in this issue. The issue actually focused on She-Hulk, Doc Sampson, and Mastermind Excello. Greg Pak should be commended for getting me to enjoy this story as these are 3 characters that traditionally I haven't really cared for. This worked though.

This issue basically set the stage for the supporting cast in the Hulk's return to Earth. Mastermind Excello is trying to recruit She-Hulk Jen Walters to help him aid the Hulk. The issue ends with Mastermind meeting up with the Champions. It could be assumed I supposse that they will be joining him. Oddly though, the Hulk and Hercules are fighting on the cover to #107. I guess it won't be an easy team-up. Also throughout the issue, it's revealed that Mastermind is trying to bait Reed Richards into sending Doc Samson after him. He succeeds and there is a big fight between She-Hulk and Doc Samson. She-Hulk wins.

The art is spotty. It's really good in some places and really bad in others. The real story here though is Greg Pak. He's quite talented and he has a bright future in comics ahead of him. A

World War Hulk Prologue - This was really good. There were 3 stories in it. The first was an AWESOME Peter David story where the Hulk kicked the shit out of a bunch of aliens and then turned on his Warbound group in a blind rage. There was also a storyline about Jen Walters and Doc Sampson discussing the cause for the Illuminati's war against the Hulk. The Hulk also learned to focus his rage with Hiroim the Shamed. It was well done. The art was a little spotty but you'd kind of expect that with 3 different pencillers, 3 different inkers, and a colorist on the story.

The second story was a Mini-Marvels story written and drawn by Chris Giarrusso. It was really cool. It was fun and funny. I loved it.

The third story was a story about Mastermind Excello that fills in some gaps in the Hulk #106 story. It was pretty good. It was written by Greg Pak. The art was terrible mangaesque shit drawn by Takeshi Miyazawa.

Overall very good and a hell of a value at $3.99. A

The Initiative #2 - This was really good. I can't believe how much I'm actually enjoying this book. This is really entertaining. I'm intrigued by emo boy er I mean Trauma. He seems to be an interesting character that Slott can do some cool stuff with. He's in good company as Cloud 9 and a few others seem to fit into this description as well. I'm also intrigued by the whole Justice/Yellow Jacket/Gyrich levels of power, information, and conflict dynamic. I think it's a rich area for Slott to play with.

I liked Caselli's art more than I ever have before. Take that for what it's worth. A

Omega Flight #2 - This was good. I'm still excited to see what happens. It is taking quite a long time to build up though when you consider that it only has 5 guaranteed issues. It feels kind of weird. US Agent is really obnoxious and I hope he dies. The art was not really my thing. B-

Ms. Marvel #15 - I'm so glad that I stuck it out with this book through Civil War when Ms. Marvel was difficult to root for. It has gotten really good again. In this issue, Carol and her SHIELD team take on MODOK and a few splinter groups of AIM. These are all of the ingredients for a story that I'll hate, but Reed pulled it off. I actually enjoyed it. I'm fairly shocked. The story ended with Wonder Man going rogue under the control of MODOK and attacking Ms. Marvel. The resolution should be interesting. Aaron Lopresti's pencils were pretty good. A-

Punisher Max #47 - This was great. This is such a consistently great book. I can't believe that the Garth Ennis that writes this is the same Garth Ennis writing the Barracuda mini. This is a book that you can pick up at the start on any arc. A new one starts at #49. Check it out. A

Astonishing X-Men #21 - I've been having a hard time with this book. I usually can't remember what's going on because of the delays and so I don't enjoy it as much as I would. I didn't have that problem this time. This issue was awesome. I liked it a lot. This is apparently Whedon's week. The art is beautiful. A.

Dark Tower #4 - This is such a pretty goddamn book. Richard Isanove should be the envy of every colorist to ever live. The colors are really that striking. The story is also very good. I can't wait to see the conclusion. B+

DC Comics
DC had a pretty mixed week with a high C+ average. They had the Shit Book of the Week in Shazam. They also had Book of the Week runner-up American Virgin #14.

Scalped #5 - This was good. The story is starting to come together. I was a little worried after the last issue but it seems to be back on track. I'm back into it. I can't wait to see where it goes. The art is not so great. B

Detective Comics #832 - As far as fill-ins for Dini go, this was great. Out of that context though, it was on the high side of good. I was unhappy that it revolved around such shitty villains, but this was definitely not a repeat of the Mr. Phosphorous incident of #824 and for that I am thankful. The pencils were so routine and unremarkable that they were nearly invisible. That's better than the alternative though. B-

American Virgin #14 - This is such an awesome book. I've just finished reading it and I'm so excited to read the next one. I really wish that there were 50 more issues for me to read right now. I love the story to this point and I love where it's going. You must read this book. A+

Shazam The Monster Society of Evil #3 - I'm actually offended by this book. It started out so fun and light in the first issue. It has come off the rails with the last two issues. I don't have any need for ham-fisted politics in my comics. I just don't. It's one thing if one of the underlying themes of a story could be applied to the politics of today. It's quite another to have it be blatant, obvious, and screechy. I don't know that I will even buy #4. This was a bit much for me and I need some time to think about it. This is my first exposure to Jeff Smith and to be honest I think that Bone is now off of my list of things to read. F

Dark Horse Comics
Dark Horse had a great week with an A average.

Buffy #3 - The week of Whedon continues. Holy shit this book is good. This is almost as good as having the show back. It's very funny and exciting. The art is really good 90% of the time. There are some spotty trouble spots. A

Image Comics
Image had a great week with an A+ average. They had Book of the Week runner-up Strange Girl #16.

Strange Girl #16 - This was awesome. This story seriously gets better with each issue. I don't want to go into too much detail because I know that a bunch of you are reading it now too and I don't want to spoil it. It's awesome. A+

Fred's This Week In Comics for April 25, 2007

This week was a light week for me. It was also a really shitty week. The average for the week was a C+. DC was the Publisher of the Week. Daredevil #96 was the Book of the Week. X-Men First Class #8 was the Shit Book of the Week. In a better week, this issue of DD would never get picked. Let's get into it.

Marvel
Marvel had the Book of the Week in Daredevil #96. They also had the Shit Book of the Week in X-Men First Class #8. Overall, Marvel was TERRIBLE this week. They had a C average.

Daredevil #96 - This was great. Matt's client Melvin Potter was broken out of jail while being transferred back from the mental hospital. He has completely snapped and gone back to being the Gladiator. Milla is seeing a therapist and Lily Lucca is back on the scene. This story arc will likely end up being really good. It's still kind of being set up.

The art in this was awesome. I love Michael Lark and I always look forward to his work on DD. A+

Fantastic Four #545 - This had some problems. The story was told in a way that made me lose my way occasionally. I eventually always figured it out but it did happen a few times. The story basically follows the FF's continued journey through space to Epoch the planet whom they believe has Gravity's body. It was stolen from his grave in the last issue. How does a planet steal a body? I don't know and it wasn't explained. I'm guessing flunkies, but if we're talking about planets that have faces and talk then I guess you could say that anything goes. The Silver Surfer is there when they get to Epoch in his role as herald of Galactus. Apparently, Galactus is planning on eating Epoch soon. Aren't we glad that worked out? I thought they wouldn't have a story. So then blah blah happens, fight the silver surfer blah blah and then Galactus shows up. At this point, Black Panther RUNS AWAY. Read that twice, it's worth it. This was about when I began to debate whether to throw the book or roll it up and stick it in McDuffie's ass. I've come to no decision. After BP (who apparently is now the King of France as well as Wakanda) runs away, Gravity shows up to save the day. The art was not good but not horrifying either.

They brought Gravity back to life. If you're one of the 4 people on the internet whining that he died, you can stop now. You won. Yaaay for you.

Bleh - C-

Fallen Son Avengers - This series is meant to punctuate the five stages of grieving as they are lived out by people in the Marvel U over the death of Captain America. This was the issue that dealt with stage #2: Anger.

It had it moments. There were parts of it that I genuinely liked. There were parts of it that kind of put me off because of how hostile they were. I think that was illustrative though of the goal of the issue so I won't hold it against it. I will hold the appearance of Namor against it though. It wasn't that Namor appeared that annoyed me. It was that he was used as "Sam The Explainer". There is a character in many stories that exists solely to illuminate the audience. It's never as apparent in good stories as it is in hackish ones. This use was hackish. He comes onto the scene to stop the Mighty Avengers from beating a guy to death. His dialgue can basically be summarized as follows: "You're just angry that Cap died. Killing this guy won't solve anything or make you feel better. Deal with Steve's death.". It was dumb, obvious, and unnecessary.

Ed McGuinness did a great job on the pencils and pulled the grade up a bit. B

The Punisher MAX Presents Barracuda #3 - I have really mixed feelings on this book. I'm torn between feeling like it's moderately entertaining and that it's insulting and shitty. I'm going to keep reading it because it's Garth Ennis and there are only two issues left but please don't view that as any kind of endorsement from me. It's not something that I'd recommend. The art is on the good side of bad by a hair or two. D

X-Men First Class #8 - Well, this is the final installment in this cavalcade of nonsense. I'm so glad it's over. I nearly set this issue on fire when they explained away Professor X's trip through the jungles of Africa by showing his ALL-TERRAIN POWER CHAIR. These issues take place between issues in the first 32. That shit never existed. Fuck this book. I will not be buying season/series 2. The art also still sucks. F

DC
I only had 1 DC book this week. That is a really light week for me. They earned Publisher of the Week with an A- average.

JSA #5 - This was great. I liked it a lot. I've been reading JSA and really enjoying it but I've been very lost. I think with this issue that I'm starting to get it. This was part 2 of the JSA/JLA crossover. It will be continued in JLA #9 in a few weeks. The story was great. The pencils were a bit troubling in spots. There were some scenes with Superman in them where the face was just off. He didn't really look like Superman. The coolest part of the book was Batman kicking his own ass. Dr. Destiny had created a bunch of Batmans from the nightmares of the inmates at Arkham Asylum and Batman had to take some of them down. They also found two more members of the Legion. The increased page-time for Starman was also a bonus. A-

Image
Image had a light but decent week with a B+ average.

The Walking Dead #37 - I guess this was probably kind of necessary. This issue was more of a setup/housekeeping sort of an issue. It felt slow in comparison to the way things have moved lately. A group of men left to go find the national guard armory that the other city had been raiding for weapons. Maggie and Glen got married. And the issue ended with Rick's wife beginning to tell him that the baby she's pregnant with isn't his. It was good I guess but I do expect more from TWD. The pencils were ok as usual. B+

This Week In Comics
This was an average week with a B- minus average. Marvel had the Book of the Week with Mighty Avengers #2 and was also Publisher of the Week. Image had the Shit Book of the Week in Drain #3. I'll get right into it as there's a lot to talk about.

Marvel
Marvel had a high B- average and earned Publisher of the Week Honors. They also had the Book of the Week with Mighty Avengers #1.

The Mighty Avengers #2 - I love this book. There was absolutely no reasonable expectation that I would, but I really do. It would be an understatement to say that I'm not the biggest fan of the characters in the book. Bendis writes them so well though. He's made me moderately interested in The Sentry. The Sentry, for the love of God. How talented is this man? I thought that Ares was a total throw-away character. He's not. Bendis has made him kick ass. I've liked Ms. Marvel but she's had some problems that she's seems to be getting past. Bendis has found his own version of her voice that I love. Iron Man has been missing and that certainly doesn't hurt. Black Widow is interesting and I've never really cared about her. Wasp is more interesting than she has been, to me anyway.

It's just through and through great. I love the thought balloons. They're amusing and they let me into the inner dialogue. I like that.

I love the art. I don't care what anyone says about Frank Cho. He's excellent. I will buy everything that he does from now on.

And that brings me to The Question. The Question is: If I had sex with Female Ultron, would it be gay sex? Has Bendis gotten Female Ultron in my Tony Stark or Tony Stark in my Female Ultron? I don't know. I'm not sure that I care. Bendis always brings out these weird eww kind of questions. The Ultimate Jessica Drew/ Ultimate Spider-Man thing was the most recent example before today.

Well done all around. A+

Ultimate Spider-Man #108 - Bendis was a victim of his own success with this one. I would've loved this and overlooked the few problems it had were it not Bendis and were it not Ultimate Spider-Man. He has been nearly flawless on USM to this point in my book (I liked the Clone Saga).

Issues
1. Naming the principal of Peter's high school after John Siuntres. I like John Siuntres. Many people, Bendis included, love John Siuntres. But this took me out of the story for a moment. Also, it just felt cheap. I feel like Bendis is above bullshit like this.
2. The use of Ronin. Ronin is the big deal in Bendis' 616 NA right now. The internet is full of speculation about who Ronin is. This felt like a cheap ploy to do one of three things. Options follow:
A. Create more Ronin buzz. Have both books benefit from the 616 hype.
B. Create Ultimate/616 symetry by making Moon Knight Ronin in both universes.
C. Make people think that MK is Ronin
3. Moon Knight has the craziest storyline of any character anywhere. It's impenetrable. The Ultimate Universe is a chance for a clean slate. Moon Knight is still an aggravating crazy bastard. Horrifying.

The school shooting thing was a little weird in light of the events of this week, but that's not Bendis' fault obviously.

Overall, not a bad issue. The problems weighed it down for me but again with anyone else it would be a masterpiece. The art was serviceable as usual. B

Ultimate X-Men #81- I call bullshit on this whole thing. The Ultimate Universe was supossed to be a place where death mattered. Robert Kirkman has brought The Beast back to life. He's also removed his blue fur and he's got him working for Nick Fury. I don't know about this at all. Some things were cool. Nightcrawler finding the Morlocks was nice. There were a few other things. Overall, major fucking bullshit. D

X-23 Target #5 - They had me. They really did. This series was good in a light fluffy "ooh it's popocorn" kind of a way until the very last page of this issue. The story in this issue was even entertaining. However, the story ends with X-23 going back to the X-Mansion to kill Wolverine because he's the source of all her problems or something. In that they're basically the same character, this to me feels like artistic masturbation. I can only guess that the series will end as I'd expect any masturbatory session to end, with someone in a self-satisfied heap. I will not be that someone. This was not done for my gratification apparently. On the art side, this book is very pretty. C

Cable & Deadpool #39 - I don't think I'm reading anything like this at the moment. I don't know that I ever have. It's so great and funny. I love Deadpool. I love that he breaks the fourth wall and makes jokes about continuity and the editor of the book. The art was passable as usual. The cover was pretty shitty as usual. I'm sad that Cable will be in the next issue. He's been out of the book for about 6 months. My hatred for Cable is well-documented. Great book. A

X-Men #198 - With the run that Adjectiveless X-Men has had lately, describing a book as not the worst one ever doesn't really say much. The story wasn't quite as hard to follow as it has been but boy did it kinda suck! Actually, in truth it was ok. This book also has put me in the odd position of being happy to see art by Chris Bachalo. Ramos has been so horrifyingly awful that I'm glad to get 'just awful' back. D+

X-Factor #18 - Yaaay! We're back on track after last month's series-first soft issue. This was excellent. I loved the scene where Rictor gave up SpongeBob SquarePants to the O.N.E. as a terrorist. It had me laughing for several minutes afterwards. I loved the way that PAD used Layla Miller to tie the eniter climax together. The rest was magnificient as well. The art was nice as usual. A

Anita Blake #6 - This was good. It was probably the strongest issue in the mini so far. They're taking a break until September now and that's kind of annoying but whatever. B+

DC
DC had a high B- average for the week and narrowly missed Publisher of the Week honors.

Flash #11 - I remember the last time that my Grandmother shot at me. I was also pissed off. So, I get where Barry's coming from. This book is good. I like it a lot. The story is gripping. I have no idea what's going on in parts but it's still compelling enough to pull this new Flash reader through. The cliffhanger at the end was great. Barry revealed to 2 police detectives that he was the Flash. I can't wait to see what happens next. The art was on the better side of average. B+

Robin #161 - This was great. I'm so glad that it was ifanboy's pick a few months ago and I started picking it up. It's a lot of fun and the story is good. Poor Robin lost his girlfriend to being a superhero. Damn if I can't relate to that! Huh? What? Right I'm not a superhero. Ok, well I liked it. The artist still needs to be changed but the story is great. Hey, who's the glowing guy? Anyone? A-

The Brave & The Bold #3 - Simply put: DROPPED. I have competing reasons why. First off, I'm really annoyed by this constant sexualization of Supergirl. I don't read her book. It may happen all the time. I don't care. It's not that I'm uptight or something. It's that she's 17 and she's SUPERGIRL. It's not necessary or cool. The last issue showed Hal Jordan being sexually attracted to her. This issue showed her pretending to flash Lobo. Which brings me to reason #2: Lobo. I don't want to read about Lobo. This was my first time. There won't be a second. The page at the end of the book that showed that next month is Lobo and Supergirl made the decision really easy for me. Additionally, the story sucks. There's too much fighting. It's difficult to follow and I just don't care about it.

Also, the person that made the decision to put the Cal Ripken comic into the book in the middle should be kicked in the head. I read a page and a half befoe I realized that it wasn't just some odd ass turn in the story. Bullshit.

The art was good I guess but very cluttered. F

The Spirit #5 - This issue of The Spirit was better than most books. It wasn't a great issue of The Spirit though. Cooke has set the bar REALLY HIGH. I was disappointed. It was bound to happen sooner or later.

The story was a little weak in this one. I didn't enjoy reading Mr. Carrion and Julia at all. For those of you that didn't read it, Mr. Carrion was a lunatic who was in love with his bird Julia. Julia was a vulture. I'm almost sure he was fucking the bird. I'm not joking. The Spirit busts into their office just as he's suggesting that they 'retire'. He says he loves the bird throughout the book and there's even some creepy human/bird hugging and nuzzling. Ick.

It was astonishingly beautiful as usual, beastiality of course withstanding. B-

JLA #8 - Eh, it was better than any of the 7 that came before it. It may have been better than all 7 before it put together. It was better than OK. I wish that this crossover was being written by Geoff Johns. It could be better. The art was OK.

I do have one nitpick though. OK really it's two. First, why in a book with 62 characters do they crossover with a book that has 174 characters and then decide that they two teams should search for 7 more characters from the JLA of the future? Second, must you name future JLAer #2 Karate Kid? Haven't I heard that name before? Where was it? Hmmm..... screw it. B+

DMZ #18 - This is a great book. Brian Wood writes this story stunningly well and Burchelli's pencils are beautifully terrifying. This is the first issue of the Friendly Fire arc. It tells the story of one soldier who joined the Army to avoid going to jail. He was soon after involved in a massacre in which 198 civilians died. Wood made me feel so deeply for this character that I want to root for him even though it's pretty plain to see how this will end for him. This book makes me sad and happy at the same time. A

Ex-Machina #27 - This was good. I wish that I read it in trade though. 2 months is so long to wait in between issues. The art was nice. B

Image Comics

Image had a not so great week with a average right between D+ and C-. They also had the Shit Book Of The Week with Drain #3.

Invincible #40 - This was all right. This isn't my favorite Invincible arc, but it'll do I guess. The story and pencils were solid as usual. B

Drain #3 - This sucked so much ass that I couldn't even finish it. Add to this that I can't even remember when #2 came out. I think it was 1984. Fuck you - DROPPED. F

Fred's This Week In Comics for April 11, 2007

This was an odd week. It was a stark contrast to last week when everything was good. The average this week was a B-. The Book of the Week was The Nightly News #5. The Shit Book of the Week was Punisher War Journal #6. The Publisher of the Week was Image Comics. Let's get into it.

Image
Image had the Book of the Week and was the Publisher of the Week as well with an A+ average.

The Nightly News #5 - No writer has ever made me want to plan their coronation with the first work that I read from them. Jonathon Hickman may well prove to be the first yet. There is one more issue of The Nightly News coming and while I do look forward to it, it will break my heart to see it end.

Hickman is a man who came along at a time when something needed to be said. He's certainly not the only one doing it, but he does do it with style and flair. One of the central themes in this work is the corruption of the media and the public's growing distrust of them. The focus of the book is on a group of people, who could be called a cult, who've been screwed by the media. They band together under the group's leadership to exact revenge on journalists and journalism. Hickman uses the book to express his and many people's outrage at the way the 'professional' media has grown ever and more deceitful, careless, and arrogant in this age of hyper-competition, the 24-hour newscycle, and the primacy of being on the air first and correct next.

The art in this book is great. It's very good and fitting. The pencils appear almost agitated and it works. The layouts in the book are amazing as well. I don't know that I've ever seen better. Also, the sidebars, charts, insets, and graphs all convey information while at the same time mimicing the format of news as it's delivered now. It's a wonderful device that works to use the tools of the media against it. Hickman's past as a graphic designer is evident as every inch of page in this book is used thoughtfully and deliberately.

YOU MUST BUY THIS BOOK! The trade is already available on Amazon(http://www.amazon.com/Nightly-News-Jonathan-Hickman/dp/1582407665/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-1112676-0104967?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1176348298&sr=8-1). It's scheduled to ship June 25th.

Magnificient. A+

Marvel
Marvel had a shitty week. Their average was a high C-. They also had the Shit Book of the Week with Punisher War Journal #6. It was unequaled or even rivaled in its shittiness.

Thunderbolts #113 - This was half-way decent. The middle 12 pages or so were very enjoyable. I'm willing to give it one or two more. My main problems were with the beginning and end of the book. In the beginning, Norman Osborn seemed to be genuinely concerned about Penance. I know they're just trying to show that's he erratic so whatever, but it was stupid. He's Norman Osborn - he doesn't care about people. Then at the end of the book, they had this briefing where Osborn kept calling the Steel Spider Spider-man. We get it, he's obsessed with Peter Parker. Spider-man is the reason he took the job. Let's move on. Who cares?

The art was better than it has been. It was almost as good as it was in #110 back when I wasn't bitching about it. C

Punisher War Journal #6 - I feel like Marvel's testing my will. Lately I've been dropping bad books left and right. I've promised myself that PWJ is out the door once this whole Cap thing is resolved. This issue was a complete abortion.

New(maybe one time only(I hope)) segment called 'the worst':

Worst Dialogue ever - seriously, who writes this shit? Matt Fraction's dialogue has all the charm of a colostomy bag. There's a sequence where Shield and Bridge are in pursuit of Castle. One agent has a shot at him and calls in to get verification to take it. This is what his superior officer says: 'Open Fire Dammit. You waiting for an e-vite or something?'. Who the fuck talks like that? Ever? Under any circumstances? Douchebag.

Worst Plot Ever - I would believe you if you told me that Matt Fraction wrote this story on the wall of the cardboard box he lives in. I have to unfold the story to explain it because of all the time-shifting and bullshit involved. Basically, a human trafficker brought 4 Arabs over the Mexican border. They were talking about attacking San Diego. They left their bag in his truck. He threw the bag over the border wall and called 911 to tell the police to go find it. Please pause while the call to 911 is used to make weak-ass phone sex jokes. Ok, we're back. Then Castle goes to Mexico (dressed as Disco Cap) to take on Hate-Monger as he and his crew burn up a Mexican village. Yes, that was Hate-Monger. Please insert after-school special here. Then book ends (begins actually) with Frank tied to a stake in the desert.

Really to stab yourself yet? Don't do that, stab someone else*. F

Iron Man #16 - The shine is gone. I'd had been suffering through IronMan and hating Tony Stark but then in #15 it actually all clicked. Rather I should say, Iron Man #15 didn't suck. By the time they got around to doing #16, it sucked again. I'm dropping this book. I can't take it anymore. The Mandarin is back if you give a fuck. The art was serviceable. D-

New Avengers #29 - I love this book. Bendis never lets me down. The story was great. The dialogue was great. The banter was on. I love that Danny Rand made a fool of Iron Man. I also love that Rand's lawyer threatened to expose Tony and he couldn't say shit. He will yet get his. Also, the thing where Dr. Strange conjured up the Mighty Avengers' fears was awesome. I love that Tony Stark is haunted by Steve Rogers. Fuck Iron Man.

Yu's art was better than it has been. I still dislike it but not as much as I did. I can't wait to see who Ronin is in issue #30. A-

White Tiger #5 - This was good. It was probably the best of the mini so far. There are some dialogue issues that bug me but it's not so hard to get past them. The art is fairly good as well. To be honest, if it hadn't ended with White Tiger fighting a crocodile wearing ripped purple pants it would've had a chance as my pick. For Christ's sake, it had a funny cameo by Deadpool. A-

DC
DC had a really strong week. In lesser weeks, either Green Arrow and Fables could've een the Book of The Week. Damn you Hickman! Their average for the week was a high A-.

Fables #60 - Fables is such a well done book all around. The story and art are always so great. This issue was no exception. This story begins a new arc in which Flycatcher has gotten the memory of his family and their fate back. Initially, he goes into a deep depression. However, Red Riding Hood is able to snap him out of it and he decides to get revenge. The issue ends with Fly talking to Boy Blue at the Farm about teaching him to use the Witching Cloak and the Vorpal Sword to go back to the homelands and slay every goblin that he comes across. Fly wants to be a Destroyer. It's so good. I can't wait for #61. A+

All-Star Superman #7 - This book is so pretty. I love Frank Quitely's art. I would buy it for the art alone. The story has been good. I didn't care much for this particular story. I hate Bizarro. I always have. I'm not so fond of Superman either but I like to read the good stuff. Bizarro does not do it for me. The reveal of Zibarro on Bizarro World ,or whatever it's called, at the end was the only thing worse than it being a Bizarro story. Zibarro - the backwards backwards Superman. Fuck you, that's stupid. Anyway, it was pretty so it'll ride on that. B+

Green Arrow #73 - This was excellent. This is the first month that I'm caught up. I just read the last six issues over the weekend. I'm so glad that I did. This was the first part in the final arc of the GA series as it exists now. The showdown between Ollie and Brick is set up. Also, Ollie's on the verge of being replaced as mayor. It was also revealed in this issue that he's intentionally losing the election as he's cut a deal with the guy who won to keep Mia out of trouble and to keep his programs funded.

The art was also good. A-

*Please don't stab anyone

Fred's This Week In Comics for April 4, 2007

This was a great week. Every single book I had was great with only one exception. Runaways #25 was given an incomplete because I'm reserving judgment until I see at least one more issue. I had a difficult time choosing my Pick of the Week and my Publisher of The Week. In a compromise, I've named Dark Horse the Publisher of The Week and American Virgin #13 as the Pick of the Week. I was incapable of picking a Shit Book of the Week. There weren't any bad books in my stack. Here's to hoping it keeps up.......

DC
DC had a great week. I was happy with all 4 books. American Virgin was my Pick of the Week. Their average grade was an A-.

American Virgin #13 - Did you ever love a book so much that you're angry with yourself for not reading it in trade? You know, because it's one of those books, the kind that end on giant nasty Alias season finale style cliffhangers. This is that book for me. This story is so great. I really can't say enough about how much I love it. It's so dysfunctional and fucked. In this issue, as in many of the issues, a lot of stuff happened. Also, there were the weird moments that are always present and amusing. Adam delivered a baby. Yes it was almost totally out of the blue. Also, Adam's hit man friend turned out to be a woman. There wasn't really any warning for that or at least I missed it. The art was awesome as usual. I love Becky Cloonan's work. A+

Detective Comics #831 - Paul Dini's back and better than ever. While the last two issues had their moments, I was glad to see his name on the cover. This issue was excellent. It was fun and cool and it just worked. It told the story of Harley Quinn's genuine transformation from super-henchwoman or whatever she was to an improved person. It featured Scarface which always makes me happy. It's such an odd character, but he always makes me smile. Maybe it's because he is so strange. The art wasn't terrible but there were spots where it definitely could've been much better. A-

JLA #7 - I'm not sure where my opinion on this really comes from. I liked it. Did I like it because it wasn't total crap? Did I like it because the Red Tornado was hardly in it? Did I like it because it was what #1 should've been? I don't know the answers to these questions for sure but I suspect that it's 'Yes' to all three. The art was OK. Ed Benes is cool in my book most of the time.

The story was good. I like that they finally got the team together. I like that they finally have a headquarters. I liked the Red Arrow story beats. I liked the Ollie story even more than that. If you've yet to pick up JLA but were thinking about it, do it with this issue. 1-6 were totally retarded and unimportant. A-

Scalped #4 - This was good. I'm considering switching to trade though. It's beginning to feel as though reading it this way is a bit disjointed. The same thing happened for me with Loveless. The story was good. The art was OK. B

Dark Horse
Maybe by the time this book concludes I won't find it strange anymore that I actually have a Dark Horse section. Dark Horse went 1 for 1 in amazing books. Their average was an A+. They were the Publisher of the Week.

Buffy #2 - This was awesome. I love this book. Whedon still has the voices of the characters perfectly. If I were to close my eyes (and still somehow be able to read it), I could imagine that I was listening to the show. I'm going to be really sad to lose that if BKV and Loeb don't have it. This issue was magnificent. It tied into the whole Buffy/Xander drama. It showed Giles which was nice. It began the battle with the Amy, the real enemy's proxy. It also featured the return of Willow on the last page. If this issue only brought Willow back it would've made me happy. Fortunately it did so much more.

The art is very nice as well. A+.

Marvel

Marvel also had a good week. Their average grade for the week was right in between a B+ and an A-.

Omega Flight #1 - To say that I expected very little from Omega Flight #1 is the same as stating that I would never choose Hoboken as a vacation destination. That is to say, it seems a foregone conclusion.

I was pleasantly surprised though by Omega Flight. It was fun. I enjoyed the story. With the [seemingly] slow build-up, it does seem odd that it will end after only 5 issues. I think I'd like to see more. The art wasn't great but it wasn't terrible. I want to see where this goes. B

Avengers The Initiative #1 - I kind of expected this book to be crap. I wanted to buy it anyway because of its apparent central location within the landscape of the present day Marvel U. That being said, it was actually kind of good. I don't really mind that the characters were all 85th string people or new people. It worked. I'm intrigued. Also, I love Cloud 9. She's great. I think that she's new. I've never seen her anywhere before. Trauma I could do without but he's not horrible.

OK, so this is a spoiler. Near the end of the book, hero candidate MVP is killed. The training camp is at Stamford. Stamford, for those of you living under a rock without a comic for the last year or so, was the site of the Stamford massacre that kicked off Civil War. The government decides to tell no one that MVP has been killed at Stamford. They don't want the bad press or natural symbolism. Doesn't it seem like Marvel is still making the Anti-Registration case? Isn't that super-fucking ironic that it's going on in the Initiative book? I'm confused. This is a relatively minor nitpick and doesn't affect the quality of the book.

The art was good. A-

Fallen Son Wolverine - This was great. I liked it a lot. The art could've been better but the story was great. This is what I'd expect Wolverine to do and how I'd expect him to act. It's a shame that Loeb writes him so poorly in his own book. I'm in for the long haul on Fallen Son. B+

Runaways #25 - Let me start y saying that I thought the art was ok. There's been a lot of discussion lately about how much people on the site hate it. I'm not one of you.

That being said, I don't know what the hell to make of this issue. It seems somehow wrong. Would the Runaways agree to steal for the Kingpin? I don't think they would. I know several of you will have examples that make you think it's plausible, but I don't buy it.

The Punisher? I love the Punisher when he's done well. I'm scared for how this'll turn out. Also, one of the cool things about Runaways was the relative lack of these types of appearances. I don't want to have to pick begin rooting for the Punisher and rooting for the Runaways. In the 'working for the Kingpin' scenario, I could see him legitimately going up against them.

In the end, this is Whedon's first issue. I'm not going to get screechy. I'll give him a chance. I'll even be nice and give this one an Incomplete.

The Incredible Hulk #105 - Let me tell you - Greg Pak is really good. This issue was the last issue of Planet Hulk and the last before the launch of World War Hulk. He's set up a hell of a story. I can't wait for Planet Hulk. He's pissed and Earth is FUCKED. Pak's range in this story was amazing. He was able at one point to make me feel horrible for the Hulk. He showed me how utterly alone he was and he tore his heart out by killing Caiera. The artist made the hairs on my arms raise with the last page. It's a two-page splash of the Hulk on top of his spaceship with a sword screaming in rage. Pak totally made that the ONLY WAY it could've ended with the story he told to that point. Great all around. A.

Ms. Marvel #14 - Hey, it's finally officially back on track. I really liked this issue. In this issue, Carol and her team find Julia Carpenter (Spider-Woman - one of them anyway) and reunite her with her daughter, get her a full pardon, and a job with Alpha Flight. It's actually possible to root for Carol Danvers again. She's not a complete Nazi asshole. The art was cool. A-

Punisher MAX #46 - This was good. This book always keeps going along. It's consistently good. B

Immortal Iron Fist #4 - Consistently great. It was again. Story rocks and it's so pretty. B+

Dark Tower #3 - Jae Lee and Richard Isanove should be required to work together always; perhaps even 24 hours a day. This is a ridiculously beautiful book. It seriously is. I can't say enough about it.

The story is equally great. I'm impressed. David, Furth, and King have all done a fine job. A

Fred's This Week In Comics for March 28, 2007

I was very surprised by this week. I had very low expectations coming into it. I was happy with the outcome. Did expectation play into that? Possibly, but I'm not too concerned with why. The Publisher of the Week was DC. The Book of the Week was Ultimate Spider-Man #107. The Shit Book of the Week was Wolverine #52. Read the Wolverine section for my previously hinted at big news.

The average for the week was a B+.

Marvel

Marvel, Marvel, Marvel - what am I going to do with you? They had the Book of the Week in Ultimate Spider-Man #107 and the Shit Book of the Week in Wolverine #52. Daredevil was amazing as always. Strong outings were damaged by bad art in Fantastic Four, Black Panther, and Ultimate X-Men. It's time for them to just fucking get it together already. Their average grade for the week was a B-.

Ultimate Spider-Man #107 - This was an EXCELLENT issue. I liked it a lot. It was so fun and the story that they're developing is so interesting to me. Bendis writes Peter Parker so well. The dialogue and the sens of humor are awesome. There was a lot of self-loathing in this issue too that rang true.

This was part 2 of the newest Ultimate Marvel Knights arc in which Peter teams up with Daredevil, Iron Fist, Doctor Strange, Moon Knight, and Shang Chi to take down the Kingpin. This issue saw Petter seemingly talk them out of killing the Kingpin. Moon Knight will don a disguise to infiltrate the Kingpin's operation as his bodyguard. They'll use him to get information on how best to take him down. It was also revealed that Iron Fist was a traitor to their group as a spy for the Kingpin. I'm betting that this will cause them problems.

There were several other points from other stories. The last issue revealed that Kitty Pride tranferred to Peter's school. In this issue, she has it out with Peter and reveals that she was thrown out of the X-Men for trying to help him. She's in his school because her mother moved to a house 8 blocks from it. At the end of the sequence, one panel shows Mary Jane having some kind of weird claw issue with her hand that makes you believe that she might not be 'healed' after her run in with the Oz chemical. Also, when Kitty is introduced as a new student and a mutant they had a very realistic and offensive scene where she had to show the other kids what she could do and answer questions. It's probably what would happen and it's sad really.

The art was solid as usual. A+

Ultimate X-Men #80 - More of the aftermath of the death of Professor Xavier. The story was solidly good. It wasn't as good as Ultimate Spider-Man or even as good as UXM has been, but still pretty good. Yanick Paquette sucks. He's seriously bad and needs to be replaced. I'll have example panels later in the week. It's almost distractingly bad.

This was part 2 of the Aftermath arc. It is revealed that Cyclops, Jean Gray, and Storm have been left the school by Xavier in his will, but that they don't have much money to continue running it. His lawyer advises them to sell all of the real estate holdings they were left to get some liquidity. They come up with a better plan. They ask Lilandra to continue supporting the school and she agrees to. Her only condition is that her man be allowed to stay on to observe because of their ages. Well, their man is with the Hellfire Club. Is Lilandra with them? Does she really believe Jean to be the Phoenix? Will the Dark Phoenix saga come back to life? Only time will tell.

Also in hanging threads, Bishop is sticking around. Xavier left the three a series of warehouses that they didn't know existed. What's in them? Good question. Wolverine left the team to take care of some things. Peter is staying with Northstar in Chicago. Iceman is still a douche. Nightcrawler is thinking of joining the Morlocks. Pyro wants to be a member of the X-Men.

Oh yeah, and Cyclops disbanded the X-Men and it was revealed that Xavier is still alive in the future as a captive of Cable. Almost forgot to mention those things. Of course I'm being sarcastic. Cyclops decided that the mansion was to become a school and that they'll open their doors to mutants everywhere to teach them to co-exist in society. Somehow, that's different from Xavier's dream. And Xavier with Cable(Wolverine) in the future, I don't even know what to say about that. I have to see it play out.

Paquette should think about becoming an x-ray tech or something. This art thing isn't working out. B-

Wolverine #52 - I can't believe that I'm saying this. Are you sitting now? How about now? Good. I'm DROPPING WOLVERINE AND WOLVERINE ORIGINS as of RIGHT NOW. Marvel can kiss my ass. I'm so sick of these assholes stealing from me because I'm too weak to end it. It stops now. No more. This issue, which is number 3 of at least 5, that covers 'the final fight' of Wolverine and Sabertooth was fucking tripe end to end. It ended with Loeb foreshadowing more Lupine(read furry) involement. Bite my d***. I'm out. F

Fantastic Four #544 - This was great. I like what McDuffie's doing and I have hope for his time on the title. It was fun. I liked the interplay between the characters. I liked the dynamic of BP, Storm, Torch, and Ben working together. I even like Uatu's joke. Yes, the Watcher tells jokes now. Whatever. It worked.

I do not like the art though. This guy needs to go away. I probably would've given the book a high B if it weren't for the art. As it stands, it gets a C+.

Black Panther #26 - I really like Hudlin's stories. I've enjoyed them 95% of the time in Black Panther's latest 26 issues. The problem though is that the art isn't steady. I don't know that they've had the same penciller for 3 consecutive issues during any point in the time since the relaunch. Also, most of the artists have been bad. This guy's stuff was a not so good. It was almost distracting. There were some minor inconsistencies in continuity between this and FF but I suspect that this will continue for the duration of Storm and T'Challa's time at the Baxter Building. It's not so important I guess. I'll make an effort not to whine about it. The art is going to cost them a letter. B-

Daredevil #95 - Do you think that Ed Burbaker and Michael Lark would adopt me if I wrote a nice enough letter? I have so much respect and admiration for both of them.

This is consistently the best book on the shelf every month. I loved the setup for the new arc. I loved the use of Matt's extended inner monologue as narration. I loved the use of Melvin Potter to show Matt again as a good man who believes in justice. I also loved that Matt's back out trying to take the kitchen back.

And the pencils? BEAUTIFUL. Michael Lark is so good. I love the look and feel of his art. The only people I'd put in his class right now are Darwyn Cooke, Alex Maleev, and Tim Sale. People who know me know that those three are like the holy trinity of what's good in pencilling. A word too on the page layouts: SPECTACULAR. I love the whole narration on the left, panels on the right thing.

I'm intrigued for the story that will be and I loved the issue. It would've been my pick if USM was a little less Amazing or a bit more had happened. The last bit isn't a complaint, it's an observation. Setup's a bitch. A

Image

Image had a great week. I only had one book from them but it did get an A.

Strange Girl #15 - This was a great issue. There are so many elements to this book that are great. It's funny, sad, touching, and it makes you want to root for this girl. Bethany is finally on the boat to Europe. Trouble is on the way. Beautiful looking book too. A

DC

DC had an awesome week. They had a slightly lower GPA than Image but I'm giving them Publisher of The Week anyway because it was close and I did only have one Image book. Their average grade for the week was a high A- halfway to A.

Batman #664 - The strangest thing happened this week, I opened my Batman comic and there was actually a comic inside. Odd, I can't remember when that last happened. Stranger still, I actually enjoyed it. It's been a while for that too. I believe it's been 5 months.

Anyway, this was fun and good. I'm intrigued by the story that they're building. I liked Batman parachuting onto the mountain to meet the woman. I liked him taking down a helicopter witha ski pole.

The art was good. A-

Superman Confidential #4 - Damned if I know what's going on this book, but it sure does look nice. It's been so long since the last one came out that I almost forgot entirely what the story was about. I think I remembered some of it by the end. Tim Sale's pencils and the coloring by Dave Stewart are just incredible.

UPDATE: After researching on Wikipedia, I think I understand this story now. I really wish that I didn't have to do that, but it is quite pretty. A-

DMZ #17 - This was really great. Brian Wood does such a great job with this book. Month after month he manages to kill me with the sadness and the horror of this reality that he's created. This was the conclusion to the Public Works arc. I can't wait to see what comes next. The art was cool as usual. A.

Fables #59 - This was really fun. This issue answered a series of reader questions in short one to three page stories. Each story had a different artist. I liked seeing the different art styles. It was cool. Nice to see David Lapham in the group too. It was cool. Fables - great again. A

Fred's This Week In Comics for March 21, 2007

My apologies for this going up a little late. I fell asleep in the last 6 pages of my last book last night. So I woke back up around 5:15 or so and got back to it.

Anyway, this was a strange week. I had a bunch of titles that were serviceable and some that were terrible. None of them were truly exciting, electric books. My pick of the week would have been The Spirit #4. I'm sure that comes as a big shock to all of you. If you're all ok we can move on. I'm starting something new this week. I'm going to do a shit book of the week too from here on out. This week's shit book of the week was Amazing Spider-Man #539. It very well could have been Deadman #8 but I frankly don't care as much about it as I do ASM. The publisher of the week was Image with an A average. The overall average for the week was a C+.

Marvel

I had 9 Marvel books this week with an average of a C. Marvel also put out the shit book of the week with ASM #539. Amazing Spider-Man #539 - Isn't it odd that after 67 issues of ASM JMS still has no idea who Spider-Man is? Well, it amazes me and frankly that's been the only 'amazing' thing about the book lately. The only thing that I liked about it was that the Kingpin had A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway on his desk - I love that book.

Let's get into the story. In #538, Aunt May was shot by a sniper hired by the Kingpin. This issue begins right as the last ended.

My Problems:

1) Peter runs out of thier hotel room screaming 'No More' over and over again. No, I'm not really sure what that was suppossed to be. Maybe he has Tourettes now and it's part of his tick. So then he GRABS A JEEP AND THROWS IT THROUGH A BUILDING AT THE SECOND OR THIRD FLOOR. Read that again and come back to here when you're done. All set? So, the Amazing Spider-Man is heaving jeeps at assassins now? I know that he has the proportional strength of a spider but come on. He threw a 2 ton fucking jeep 30 feet into the air and a couple hundred feet across a parking lot? I don't really buy that. If it does work logisitcally, it's only because JMS did some earlier fuckup that made it possible.
2) Peter brings May to the hospital and then just LEAVES HER THERE LIKE A JUNKIE WHO OVERDOSED ON HIS FLOOR? That doesn't work. It doesn't matter how much trouble Peter's in. He wouldn't do that.
3) So then Peter and MJ meet up to discuss the situation in TIMES FUCKING SQUARE. Seriously, was the 50 yard line of the Super Bowl taken? What the fuck?
4) Then Peter webs a policeman to the wall. I don't feel like he would do that. Maybe he has before in periods where I haven't read the book, but I've never seen anything that would lead me to believe that he'd do that.
5) After webbing the policeman, Peter goes upstairs to investigate the sniper's 'nest'. The jeep is still there and hours later it's still SMOKING FROM THE HOOD.
6) Peter finds a rifle scope in the house and decides that he's fucking Batman now. He takes it and goes off to investigate.
7) Peter goes to a warehouse to break the bones of some bad guys(no I'm not joking) and the entire time he's written and drawn like a constipated psychopath.
8) Then, the doctor tells MJ that Aunt May will **probably** die **eventually**. Fucking won't we all? Why not just kill the old goddamn bag and let the story go on? No, we can't do that. It's got to drag on.
9) Following this, the book ends with Peter promising the reader that he will find and kill the people who did this. I think I should point out that the this in the last sentence means the people who shot Aunt May and not the people who did the issue. Anyway, PP doesn't kill people. He's NOT THAT GUY. How does JMS not know that? Seriously, want to write some cool deaths? Take over Wolverine or Deadpool. Spider-Man is NOT A KILLER. It doesn't matter how right he is. It doesn't matter how bad the bad guys are. He's not a killer.

As you can tell, the entire book from start to finish was crap. I hope that JMS gets attacked by hobos with hepatitis. Fuck him. F

Ms. Marvel #13 - This was great. I liked it a lot. This title is coming back now. I'm glad that I had faith in it and hung in through all the Civil War bullshit. One of the problems that I've been having with the book is that I find myself rooting against Carol Danvers more than for her lately because of her stance on Civil War and her book during Civil War. With this first issue of Ms. Marvel's Initiative tie-in, they won me back. the book opens with her and Tony looking at the bodies of 96 people who were killed by A.I.M.. This throws Carol into a rage because they were fighting Cap and the Anti-Regs while they could've been preventing this A.I.M. strike. She promptly punches Tony Stark in his fascist fucking face (take that alliteration stan lee). The rest of the book was built around more of the agonizing 'who do I want to be' Ms. Marvel that I enjoyed so much before Civil War.

I think that this was Aaron Lopresti's first issue on pencils and it looked pretty good. I may be wrong. Let me know if I am. B+

Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Guilty Pleasures #5 - This is the book that apparently imagines itself as a Fiona Apple album, or at least that's what I can glean from the length of the title. All bitterness about having to type the title aside, it's good again. I was starting to question it last month, but I'm back on board now. This was a pretty good issue. It's odd. I almost don't want to admit liking this book. It's so cheesy. And the art, don't get me started. All of the men are drawn as if they were on the cover of a pulp romance novel. In the end though, it's pretty good. B-

The Punisher Presents Barracuda #2 - I have no idea what to make of this book. There are only 3 issues left so I'll probably stick it out, but it's kind of fucked up. I don't cringe and ask myself 'did they really have to do that' very often. This book has made me do that about 7 or 8 times in two issues. The story is ok, it's just a bit too extreme. C

X-Men First Class #7 - You know it took me a few issues to get over the continuity problems and the other things that drove me crazy about this. This issue brought them all back. Do you remember when Angel was dating the Scarlet Witch? Oh, you don't? That's probably BECAUSE IT NEVER HAPPENED AND NEVER WOULD. Christ Jesus. Also, the characterizations of Wanda, Pietro, Cyclops, and even to an extent Iceman are off.

Would Cyclops ever say: 'Is there some reason you're such a pain today? They're both grown-ups, they can do what they want without us interfering.'? NO, He would NEVER IN A MILLION FUCKING YEARS SAY THAT. He's Cyclops - he's the wet blanket. That's his role. Hey says things like: 'hey mister, no running near the pool' and 'look buddy, I think you got sand on my beach towel'. Assholes, read the book before you write the characters. Ugggh. D

X-Factor #17 - Peter David was bound to miss one of these months. So he's 16 for 17 now. It's not that this issue was terrible. It just wasn't great. I had a few problems:

1) We all enjoy the recap page. Everyone talks about how cute it is that PAD always mentions something in it about his daughter. In this issue's recap, he compared his daughter to South Park's retarded character Timmy. That was kind of odd.
2) Literally less than a week ago, I was posting with someone about X-Factor and I remarked that PAD didn't really use Rahne well. It seems that she shows up every few issues, turns into a wolf, and gets into a fight. This very thing happened this issue.
3) Pencils were done by Khoi Pham who just isn't Pablo Raimondi. Sorry fella.
4) The story wasn't super interesting to me. It was all right; it's just not great.

Hey, it was bound to happen and it did take almost a year and a half. C+

X-Men #197 - The Hecatome is coming to eat the world! Oh no! Wait, what does that mean? I don't know and I read this bullshit every month. This book sucks ass. Really, it's terrible. The story is damn near impossible to follow and Ramos' art is a fucking joke. D-

X-23 Target #4 - This is OK. The book is very pretty. The story has been good. The story in this particular issue was kind of hard to follow. But overall, passable. C

Cable & Deadpool #38 - This is one of those books I never think about. I always forget it until the week it comes out. The worst part is that it's always great. These concepts do not follow for me. Whatever. I think that this issue makes 4 or 5 in a row with now Cable. That is a great decision. Deadpool is hilarious. He cracks the fourth wall with wild abandon and makes cheap jokes. He may be my hero. In this issue, two large-breasted women convince him to go to a Hydra base and break out Agent X. He succeeds. He also manages to get some Pym particles and get back to normal size. Go Deadpool.

One thing that I can say though is that the cover was horrible. Deadpool's head looks like a buttplug or something. Goddamn Skottie Young. A

DC

DC has the pick of the week with The Spirt #4. I had 7 DC books with an average score of a high B-.

Y The Last Man #55 - I'm going to miss this book. This issue was good. It seems like Vaughn is beginning to wrap it up and pull the ending together. I did have some nitpicks though.

1) I did not need to see 355 in S&M gear.
2) What are the chances that on their trip through Russia they happen to open a box that contains Lenin's corpse?
3) The Russians and the Chechens are still fighting after the gendercide. Glad to seem some things will never change.

The art was good as it always is. The cover was fantastic. B

Deadman #8 - I just finished the email to my LCS to drop this piece of shit book. 4 words for you: phantom inter-uterine baby switching. Seriously, this storyline from goddamn adults that to my knowledge aren't trying to win a gold medal for drooling or grocery bagging? Done. I will never read another Bruce Jones book for as long as I live. F

Detective Comics #830 - This was good. It wasn't great. I enjoyed having a two-part story these past two months, but at the same time I still miss Paul Dini. The story was passable and the art was not noteworthy or terrible. This was kind of a 'blend into the walls' type of arc. B-

The Brave & The Bold #2 - This was OK. I feel it was a bit better than the last. The strangest part about that is that I've never had any interest in Supergirl but she was kind of cool here. I haven't really read much stuff with her in it, but the concept alone is dumb. They are shifting back to Batman next month, but this time with Blue Beetle. I'm still not sure how I feel about the concept. I'll stick around for a few more issues I imagine to see if the shifting anthology/rotating story thing begins to work for me.

The art was solid. B

The Spirit #4 - Holy Christ Darwyn Cooke is awesome. He has yet to miss, or even come close to missing, on this book. I wish that this book came out weekly rather than monthly. It really is quite great. The story was awesome. It was told entirely from the perspective of CIA agent Satin Silk. That was a nice cool change. The character of Hussein was amusing.

The pencils, inks, and colors on this book are consistently amazing. It is the prettiest book coming out every month. I can't even express in words how much I love the look of the book. A+

The Flash #10 - This was good. I'm not as excited as I was last month, but I did enjoy it. I'm sure that I would've enjoyed it much more if I knew all of the characters and the backstory. The art was pretty good.

I have some questions. Please help if you know.

1) Who is Zoom?
2) Why is Bart's Grandmother trying to kill him?
3) Why is JSA Flash still running around Central City?

I'd give this a B.

JSA #4 - This book stuns the shit out of me every single issue. How can I love a book that I know nothing about? Seriously, I'm completely fucking lost when I read it. I don't even know who 3/4 of the characters are. BUT, it's so good. Also, I love Ted Grant and son of Ted Grant. They're GRRRRRREAT! Sorry, I'm better than that. Anyhow, the art is also cool. I think that next month is the much talked about JSA/JLA crossover so that should be interesting. Batman and Ted Grant in the same book. My oh my what a wonderful idea. A

Image

Image was the Publisher of The Week with an average grade of A.

The Walking Dead #36 - Kirkman does it again. This was great. Martinez, the character from Woodbury who snuck off at the end of the last issue to go tell the Governor where the prison was, was killed by Rick. He hit him with an RV. It was pretty awesome. They are now gearing up to be attacked as they realize that the residents of Woodbury will find them sooner or later. I can't wait until they do. There were a lot of great character moments in the issue.

The art was good as usual. A

Fred's This Week In Comics for March 14, 2007

Well this was certainly an odd week. I tried something new this week. I tried to read all of my books in order of expectation from lowest to highest. I won't ever do that again. My lord it was difficult to read all that shit in a row. My pick of the week was easy to make. It was The Confession by Bendis and Maleev. Nobody would've called that one. Let's get to it.

Marvel

Marvel had a fucked up week where they showed me just how good and how bad they could be at the same time. There were 3 Fs and a D in the 7 books I got from Marvel. The pick of the week came from Marvel. They still managed only a C- average.

The Confession - I really wish that Bendis wrote Civil War. I have to describe this in two parts as it was written in two.

In the first story, I finally began to understand Tony Stark's side. I don't agree with him on any level, but I do get it I guess. That's how well Bendis did it. This half ends with Tony admitting that it wasn't worth it. I not only understood that, but I even admired him on some level for admitting it. He admitted it to the corpse of a friend and a hero, but he admitted it.

In the second story, Bendis erased all the Tony good will that I'd developed in the first. Oh, that tricky Bendis! Cap quoted Twain for the second time. Damn if Steve Rogers didn't love Mark Twain. Both JMS and Bendis have found spectacularly fitting quotes from him. I was practically pumping my fist in the air and screaming in the interchange that followed. And then Cap admitted he lost after Tony leaves. It was sad.

The art in this book was amazing. Maleev does it again. I love his work. I only wish that there were more of it. Bendis and Maleev do it again. A+

Spider-Man Reign #4 - This was really good. It was a fitting conclusion to a great mini. I liked the messages of hope and perseverance. I liked that the Sandman helped Peter end the rule of the Reign. I also liked that Jonah went right back to being a bloviating douchebag when it all ended.

The art was really cool. Also, surprisingly very little old man sack in this one. A

New Avengers #28 - I liked this a lot. The story was great. It had enough of the Bendis witty banter. It confirmed Quesada's statements that Cap is dead and that Ms. Marvel was lying to Spider-Woman. It also had some great Luke Cage/Wolverine scenes that I loved.

If I'm going to be honest though, I hate the art. I'm not sure if it's the pencils or the coloring but it's just not good. It's too rough and unfinished. It looks like someone quickly sketched the book while they were sitting at a table in artist alley or something. Bleh. B-

Moon Knight #8 - Yes, I know it's my own fault for buying it. This book sucks. I take back every back-handed compliment that I ever gave it. While reading it, I considered flinging myself off of a bridge, you know - cause it would suck less. Consider yourself dropped beeyotch.

What are the problems?
1) It never comes out. I can't remember the goddamn story. That certainly doesn't help.
2) The art is good but not worth waiting for
3) Huston's dialogue can be most kindly described as terrifyingly bad
4) Little brother syndrome - Much like Ghost Rider and Blade, Marvel will tack any motherfucking banner on this book that they can to sell it and then just jam it into the story in ways that are unimportant or make no sense.

What's wrong with this one?
1) Cap's characterization. I would suspect that Charlie Huston has never read anything else with Captain America in it. He comes off as a douche
2) This book takes place before Civil War 6 and 7. What? Didn't Civil War 6 come out like 3 years ago? Exagerration? never.
3) I was so lost and irritated that I didn't even read more than the first 3 lines of any of the word balloons after the midway point in the book

I literally threw it when I finished it. F

Wolverine Origins #12 - Well, it's been a month since the last one and I still can't think of a way to describe this book that doesn't involve the phrase 'fu*king c**ksucking horseshit. I'll keep trying. F

Thunderbolts #112 - The journey I've taken with this book in 3 issues has been strange. I loved #110. I really loved it. It was great. I gushed about it. I was into #111 but still a bit disappointed after the previous one. This issue, #112, was really bad. The art was a bit better than it was in #111. I'll give them that.

This issue was over the top. It was WAY over the top. It's like Ellis heard the praise for the first one and amplified the dickishness of the characters because he misunderstood why people liked it. The scene with Norman Osborn and Radioactive Man was ridiculous. Osborn's a cynical racist - yeah we get that he's a bad guy. I don't need to be reminded constantly as I'm not a fucking idiot. And going after the Steel Spider next? What the hell is that all about? Let's get a super-villian superhero team together and then we can capture FUCKING Z LIST CHARACTERS THAT PEOPLE HAVE TO LOOK UP ON WIKIPEDIA. fucking hell

and I can't recall seeing Penance once. The news thing didn't work in this issue like it did in #110. The Stan Lee cameo was retarded. Ellis needs to get it together and start hitting the goddamn ball again. D

Punisher War Journal #5 - I planned to drop this last month but then the whole thing where Castle may try to take over for Captain America thing happened and I have to stick in. The good news is that this book helps me stretch my mind trying to figure out if Olivetti or Fraction is less talented. I have no answer for you.

Why does this book have the corniest villains in it? This issue featured the Bushwacker. The Bushwacker, for those of you who don't know, has a cybernetic machine gun arm. My mistake, he has 2 cybernetic machine gun arms. This issue also featured a new character who became an auxillary police officer after 9/11. I'm really tired of reading 9/11 references and parallels in my comics. It's happening far too much lately. This thing was off the goddamn rails before it started.

The art is atrocious. I've seen more attractive things scrawled in feces on the wall in a bathroom. Fuck this book. F

DC

DC had a good week with a B+ average. Fables may have actually been my #1 book in a week without Bendis and Maleev.

Robin #160 - I liked this. It was odd to like a book again after the stretch I started out with. The story is cool and interesting and I'm not really lost despite the fact that I just started reading it with #159. Killa Nilla is a stupid character though. They just need to um .... not use him anymore.

A word on the art. I hate it. I like the book despite the art. It's just not good. It's very manga-ish. I suspect that Freddie Williams II has caused Freddy Williams I to change their name. Hell, I would. One more thing, why is Wolverine in the Lords street gang? Look at the drawings of them, you'll notice him right away.

Despite that, the story was cool enough. B

Fables #58 - This was a continuation of Bigby and family's trip to Grandpa's castle. It was a great story. It was fun. I liked that this issue was narrated by Ambrose (and from the future no less). The art was really cool. Allred's style is growing on me quickly. All of the panels look like they were drawn on wax paper. The people look like Shrinky Dinks. For some reason, it works. A-

Dark Horse

Dark Horse gets a rare $3 from me and completely earns it. Buffy was nearly my favorite book this week. It was #2.

Buffy #1 - I've been waiting for this for a long time. It feels like forever. I liked it a great deal. My favorite part was that Whedon still seems to have the voice of the characters down. Their dialogue felt like things they would say. The art was good.

There was one funny thing about it though. It's been a while since I've watched it and when they showed Dawn I remembered her as Tara. And then they started talking about her having sex with some guy and I went into a total snit about them 'transforming a lesbian character' when I remembered that she was actually Buffy's sister rather than Willow's girlfriend. I guess Xander's 'You could be her sister' line should've tipped me off. Oh well. I am an ass. A

Fred's This Week In Comics for March 7, 2007

This was a good week for comics. My POW, as if there were any real choice, was Captain America #25. It was excellent in a way that few books ever are.

Let's get into it:

Marvel
Marvel had the book of the week. They were also the publisher of the week with an average grade of slightly higher than a B.

Captain America #25 - I'll let you guys in on a little secret: I'm a real person. I get happy and sad. I have good days and bad. Many of my reviews and comments are loud and blustery and most of it's for my desired effect: that it be amusing in some way.

Sometimes I even read something and become profoundly affected by it. Captain America #25 is one of those books. It's also a book that I'll probably always remember in the way that many of you remember issues that touched, inspired, or amused you. This was the first superhero comic that ever made me cry. I wept bitterly and openly throughout the entire issue. It was amazing.

Ed Brubaker has proven once again that he should be, nay I say must be, the man to write the most important stories that Marvel has to tell. The way in which he told this story was astonishingly good. He used multiple viewpoints and narrative styles to tell the story. It began in flashbacks, and also used them throughout, to tell the story of who Captain America was. He talked about what he stood for, fought for, and meant to us. He also talked about what he meant to Falcon, Bucky, and Sharon Carter. He tore my heart out and he did it so well that, if he were here, I'd thank him for it.

His death at the hands of the Red Skull would've been enough. The use of Sharon Carter to kill him was heart-wrenching. I've never felt worse for a character than when they finally gave her the word and she remembered it. It was classic Red Skull. It was perfectly fucked up and sadistic. I don't even know what else to say. These reviews generally run more than 2000 words and I'm almost certain I could do that on Cap alone today. I'm going to leave it here, knowing that we'll probably be talking about this for weeks around here.

Epting's art was fantastic.

A+ and Pick of the Week

Civil War The Initiative - I had mixed feelings on this. I enjoyed it. It set some things up for the future. I liked the Omega Flight setup. The art was a little touchy in spots. B-

The Mighty Avengers #1 - Wow. This was really great. I had low expectations going in. I was really only buying it because it was Bendis and Cho doing the Avengers. I didn't actually care about the team. I was REALLY wrong about the team. They are awesome and fascinating.

The story was really fun. It combined the team-picking issue that every team book has with the beginning of a huge protracted battle against the Mole Man. I always love a good team-picking book (when it lasts less than 6 issues - looking at you Meltzer). I do not traditionally love a big fight book. I don't give a shit about the Mole Man. I don't know what it is. I just prefer interaction more. BUT, it works here. I liked it a lot.

The art and coloring were awesome. I love Frank Cho. I know that he's being replaced for 4 issues or so by Angel Medina later this year. I already miss him and he hasn't gone yet. I'm glad that he will be the regular artist of sorts. B+

Fantastic Four #543 - There is a lot to talk about on this one. This issue has 3 stories. I'll be grading on the first one.

The first story marks the debut of Dwayne McDuffie and Mike McKone. It was a good story that announced that Reed and Sue were taking a break and would be replaced for a time by Black Panther and Storm. I enjoyed it. I have one nitpick though. Luke Cage is bald. I refuse to believe that McKone doesn't know that. It was lazy and stupid. Who's this Luke Cage guy? Dunno, give him a fade. B

The second story celebrated the 45th Anniversary of the FF. It was written by Stan Lee. It was OK. It was a bit more hammy and hokey than I'd care for but overall it was good. The art didn't work for me.

The third story was done by Paul Pope. It was nearly unreadable. It reminded me in plot and look of some bullshit Johnny Quest or Richie Rich cartoon from the 80s. Fuck that shit.

Dark Tower #2 - This was good. I like the story. I may actually go back and read the novels. I think that it's being really well done. Also, I think I'm adding the insult slumgullion to my vocabulary. That just kicks ass. The art in the book is fantastic. The pencils are great. The coloring is phenomenonal. I can't remember seeing better coloring ever. A

Ultimate Spider-Man #106 - Every time that I start to think that I've seen all the Ultimized versions of characters that will actually excite me Bendis whips out another. Enter Ultimate Jessica Jones. This was really good. In a slower week this would be much closer to the top. I like the prospects of the team up with Daredevil and also the new Kitty twist. Kitty Pryde has transferred to Peter's school. Much trouble and crying will ensue I'm sure. A-

Punisher MAX #45 - Each arc from Ennis to this point has been great. This is no exception. You can jump in at the beginning of any arc. This one began at #43 (I believe). B

The Incredible Hulk #104 - Who's easier to feel sorry for than Bruce Banner? The writers of the Hulk have done some really fucked up things to him. Anyway in #104, the Hulk is happy and he's found somewhere to belong. He has a wife and a child on the way. These people have conditioned me so well that even before they show the explosion I expect something terrible to happen to him. It ended on a cliffhanger but I expect he'll have a few more reasons to be pissed when he comes back to Earth for World War Hulk in a few months. Expect destruction. This was really good. B+

Bullet Points #5 - Hot damn it's over. Those words make me so happy. JMS should feel like he's personally removing food from the mouths of handicapped children every time he cashes one of the checks he got for this book. The ending was as bad as could be expected. At the end, Galactus showed up and Earth made some Independence Day style defense of itself and was ultimately saved. It sucked hot feces through a straw. F

NewUniversal #4 - This was to be a make or break issue. I was ready to drop it. I actually liked this one though. I think I'm in for at least one more. Ellis has been intrigued enough for that at least. The art is fairly good too. B-

Criminal #5 - Ed Brubaker does it again. This issue was the conclusion to the initial arc, Coward. It was a great story. The second arc begins in May and I can't wait. Sean Phillips' art was cool as usual. A-

DC

DC had a rough week with an average in between C- and C.

SHAZAM & The Monster Society of Evil #2 - In many ways, this was very good. I'm really enjoying this story. The art is great. The character of Billy Batson is one that I really want to root for. I'm still shocked that I even care. Shazam has never been a favorite of mine.

My problem: Attorney General Sivana. The actions and words of this character are obvious, ham-handed political comments on the present time. My problem is that Smith is making political statements. It isn't with what Smith is saying much the same as I'd have the same problem if it swung the other way.

Why is it a problem?
1. Tone shift - This is a fun book. It's not serious. The tone is light. It's very much a popcorn feel-good kind of book. The comments of the AG, and by extension the commentary of Smith, are shrill and not fun.
2. The Timelessness Thing - He's dated the book. One of the initial appeals of it was that it felt timeless. Smith is re-telling the origin of Billy Batson as Captain Marvel. He has set it in the present with his comments

This mini has been great so far. I honestly would've probably given this issue a B+, but I have to take a full letter grade for the Sivana character. C+

JLA #6 - Whoohoo the Red Tornado is a fucking robot again. Who cares? I mean other than Brad Meltzer, who's clearly in love with him, who cares? I'm so sick of the goddamn Red Tornado that I'll buy #7 but if he's too prominent in it I'll drop it. This book isn't good enough to keep me this irritated. D

Scalped #3 - This was good. It's developing into the story it will be. I like it more than I don't. The art however isn't very good. C-

Detective Comics #829 - First the review, then the entertaining part. OK, so Dini didn't do this issue and the issue is to be continued next month. Is he done with the book? I don't know and I haven't heard. Frankly I have far too many books today to look that or 'who is Stuart Moore and why does his name sound familiar' up. This was passable. I didn't hate it and I didn't love it. The art; I wasn't so into it.

Now for the cover: I kept looking at it and trying to convince myself that I was too good to make these jokes but well here we are.

This issue is called: Batman and the Boy Bukkake

I've seen this movie before but the version I saw had less young boys in it.

In the end, eh C+

Viper Comics

Viper earns the shit-bag publisher of the week honors with an F average. Way to go guys, I'm sure you'll change my mind in 5 months when the next one comes out.

Dead@17 #3 - I am so ready to say fuck this Josh Howard asshole. Who cares? This book could be so good and has shown flashes of going that way but damn it this is the first issue to come out since October if I remember right. I couldn't even remember the main character's first name. On top of that, half the pages in the book were single panels or had no dialogue. Some were both. So after having five months to put together one issue he gives us half an issue. One more try and I'm out. F
