Daddy Joel

I'm married to my wonderful wife of four years, Jen. It's been the best four years of my 26 by far. We have one handsome son, Evan. He's amazing. I work for a political consulting firm as the marketing director. I love the Church even though sometimes I can't stand church (note the small and big letter 'c'). Basically, I'm journeying with lots of other people who want to know what it means to be a Christian today, working in seemingly non-church types of jobs yet involved in some kind of faith community. I graduated from Lincoln Christian College with a degree in ministry, now I work with senators and such. What a strange journey. But its been great and I love my job, my co-workers, my boss and living in Florida. If you read this regularly, hopefully you'll learn more about me. I hope for this site/ blog to be an outlet for my writing. Glad you're here.

Missing you.
It's your presence.
Not the smell of you or the crying.
I don't necessarily miss the busyness.
I can do without the dirty diapers.
But you two, I can't do without.
I miss you. And you.
Just being here, that's what I miss.

authenticity

Are we even capable of being truly authentic? This is a question that has been nagging me lately. I am feeling pretty inauthentic. It's not a meltdown or depression. It's simply busy-ness. It's being too busy to explore the deep life of my soul. So I rely on pat answers and churchy expressions among fellow Christians and lean on pop-culture references and the news in conversation with pre-Christian friends. How pathetic.

Whatever happened to passionate, authentic, transparent living? Have you ever felt this way? Like you lost something you had once and you don't even know how? That's where I'm at. Now the hard part: figuring out how to reclaim it. To live authentically and passionately and out loud and openly. I want everyone who knows me to know the same person, not workjoel, churchjoel, daddyjoel, husbandjoel. Just joel.

The Balancing Act

It is truly a challenge to balance your life with a new baby. It's not as if you didn't want to be home when it was just you and your wife. Rather, the stakes are just that much higher. You fear your son not knowing you, growing up thinking his dad is a workaholic, all that stuff. It really is difficult. All the while there's this little voice telling you, "he's too little to know if you're around or not, get a lot of work done now." Of course I don't by that and perhaps more importantly is the fact that Jen deserves a break and to have me around. So I'm trying to take lunches at home as often as possible (the office is six minutes from home) and to limit my late nights. We just happen to be in a special election right now and have several large projects pending too. November and December should be pretty quiet though and I plan on enjoying it.
