ARTIST STATEMENT
DAN CUMBERLAND 2007
In this age of communication, I explore the fluxuating relationship between the self and the media saturated environment in which I live.
That Social structure presents patterns for living, and choreographs movement and behavior as though we were all in some gigantic POP band.
As I wonder through the environs of culture and consumerism, and navigate ethnographic instances of participation / observation, I explore the systems of sound and language. I like to play with the idea of myth and story telling. To subvert the everyday, through displacement, in order to realize a sense of perspective, that through routine, is often not seen.
I aim to evoke a sense of shared experience. That my work is not a record or representation of something lived but is itself, infused with the ephemeral presence of life.
Whilst trying not to close myself of by attributing one specific definition, my practice incorporates elements of performance and new media. I endeavor to generate environments and situations In order to provoke dialogue and discourse into and around the conceptual elements at play within my work.
