Hello World. My name's Dave and the reason I started up this blog is because I'm kind of like the geek where I live and I have a lot of views and opinions about things going on in the world of technology but my friends and family (and especially girlfriend) are understandably getting a bit sick of hearing about stuff they don't really care about. So I decided I'll take advantage of the wonderful Web2.0 and start a blog. I'm sure nobody is going to read it but hey at least my friends will talk to me again.
Basically I love everything to do with tech. I run Linux at home as well as windows XP/Vista. I'm also very excited about the world of macs but I just don't have the cash to buy one. I pretty much spend my evenings browsing the web and reading other people's blogs and forum posts about these three platforms and feel I have a pretty decent knowledge of all of them (obviously not Macs as much as the others but i know what's new and exciting).
The reason I use Linux is because I love the idea of choice and freedom and community in computing. I love Web2.0. I love a community working only for each other to create the best experience for everybody. And with no personal gain besides knowing that you are helping out others as well as yourself. I think that's really great. It's really interesting to see how the world of Linux is kind of parallel to this idea of Web2.0. For years people have been together and sharing and helping and being a part of a community and now with Web2.0 it's happening with the rest of the Internet world and just growing in the world of Linux.
I love the simplicity of this community driven environment too. I love the fact that anybody can edit a wiki and take part in maintaining their favorite piece of software. I love the fact anybody can listen to a podcast and then take part in discussion online afterwards. Offering suggestions, help, questions. I love the fact that I can log on to twittervision every day and see what thousands of people are doing. It's just such a fantastic experience. I love Web2.0.
For a very long time I have felt like a spectator to all of this. I just read other peoples blogs. This is my very first. I read what was being developed in the newest builds of KDE and Gnome but didn't want to offer help. it's not because I didn't like the idea of participating in the community. it's just that I found it so compelling to sit back and watch it all happen. So for the past few years I've sat back and watched how everybody else deals with Web2.0 and this morning I decided I'm going to dive in myself.
So wish me luck,
Dave
