At some point recently, I realized that I have written quite a few songs over the past ten years or so. A lot of them are pretty forgettable or they just don't hold my interest any more. Some seem too explosive and controversial for our times. While some still take me to a happy place.
Back in college I recorded songs with a four track recorder, which used both sides of a cassette tape at once in order to separately capture a vocal track, a guitar track, an egg shaker, etc. It was a good intro, but the sound quality was very, very rough.
These days I'm using my trusty laptop, a digital recording interface, and recording software that an amigo set me up with. It's a wonderful step up from the four track, but I'm still figuring it all out. I could potentially record a song using up to 99 tracks, but I can only do so much with an acoustic guitar. Also, I realize that having a "chorus of Dave" can kind of freak people out, so I'm trying not to do that in every song. Maybe I could record myself clapping like 97 times to make it sound as if I'm playing live and have groupies.
Anywho, so the point is that I decided to re-record a number of songs that I had recorded previously in order to hopefully make them sound better. That is the "do-over" part. I also decided that I wanted to capture a lot of the songs that have been sitting around over the years and have never been recorded for whatever reason. That is the "leftover" part.
So these leftovers and do-overs are all pretty simple demos, meaning that they are a little bumpy and lack the polished sound that you may be accustomed to with the music that you buy. But, again, take them for what they are.
Also, I plan on posting more of these later this summer and beyond, so that may be some incentive to check back every so often. Because I'll need to make room, I'm not sure how long these songs will stay up. So, yes, you may download them for your betterment. Get 'em while they're hot.
Finally, I realize that by writing these informative behind-the-scenes comments I may be taking away some of the mystery. If so, then I am deeply sorry. But I just see it as another way in which I'm trying to get people to look past the former state champion lacrosse player that is on the surface to see that I am, indeed, just a man.
