David Elliott

My name is David Elliott and I like to write words and music and then try to put them together. Usually it doesn't work out too well.

I first got into music when I was a toddler. Growing up I had a plastic hammer that I would pretend was a guitar, it was affectionately called my hammie. This was due in part because my father played guitar; and that was my attempt at emulating him.

I grew up listening to great music (courtesy of Mom and Dad). Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Pink Floyd, Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Harry Chapin, and many other exceptional artists. This was what my folks listened to, so it's understandable that it's what I listened to.

During my pre-teen years I really began developing a taste of my own, although that isn't to say that artists from Mom and Dad's collection weren't a part of it. Around age 13 I began trying to write songs... and it's too bad I still don't have some of those, looking back I bet they would make me laugh today.... or violently ill.... or maybe a combination of the two. I would record these with my talkboy, or a boombox, whatever was available at the time.

Now, nine years later I'm still trying to write and record with a little more musical knowledge and a little better gear. Someday I'd like to put out a record... that's the plan.

Also, I rarely play anywhere but bonfires (or places with close friends)... because I'm an intimidated musical hermit.

Check out purebloom records. It's the moniker for my independent label and recording studio. Always looking to work with other artists in any step of the music creating and releasing process.

New Guitar!

So, my wife decided to purchase me the guitar that I've been talking about non-stop for the past year. It's likely a brand you have never heard of.

It's an Agile AL-3100M. It's basically a Gibson Les Paul knock-off, but don't be fooled into thinking that means it's cheap and crappy. It's much much better than the Epiphone Les Paul models and even rivals the Gibson LP Standard. This thing is about 4 to 5 times cheaper though.

Anyway, it isn't here yet - but it should be early next week.

For reviews on information on these guitars check out www.agileguitarforum.com and for a great and thorough review on Gibson Les Paul Standard vs Agile AL-3000, go here. It's by someone who owns each, and has compared them.

So, if you are thinking of getting an LP style guitar but have other expenses.... take a look at it.

Vacation Plans Ruined

Man, sometimes life sucks. Okay, so right now we're having some financial woes, although everything will be all good the first week in September. However, money is tight right now and that always sucks. So, a month or so ago we planned a vacation for the 21st through the 26th of this month. Our plan was to go camping with some friends.

So, the past couple weeks we've been fretting a little bit due to lack of funds and we remembered we have a family concert to go to on the 23rd (which would involve driving all the way back for that). We were still going to make it work though. Our plan was to camping in the National Forest (where we camped last year) and it's it's free (so that's all good), also we thought we could manage the drive there and back for the concert.

Well, now I just found out the people we were going to go with aren't going either.

So, my fun and exciting vacation is no longer. Either I decide not to take it and just work, or I stay home and we do nothing for the week.

Damnit.

Throw away your television!

So, in April my wife and I put away our TV. We just put it in our closet.... our goal was to not watch TV for the entire month of April. Once April was finished, we really had no desire to get it back out.... it wasn't a 'count-down-the-days' situation. Well, it wasn't until sometime in June it came back out and that was just to watch a DVD we own. Now, it resides in our spare bedroom on a dresser... hooked up... but used less than an hour per week (on average).

Isabella doesn't watch TV at home. She has seen some baby videos at her Grandma and Grandpa's, which I really don't think is bad. TV in moderation is perfectly fine.... but what is moderation?

It seems a lot of parents set their kids in front of a TV to get a break. There is no doubt that parenting can be a stressful, but did you ever think TV could be hindering their development? You could almost as easily set them down with a coloring book and some crayons (depending on their age) and they would probably be just as interested (especially if they aren't already addicted to the tube).

Also, Amy and I would much rather be playing with her anyway. It just seems there are so many more options than TV. Going on a walk, to the park, to the beach, to the pool, over to family or friends... outside grilling... playing music, listening to music.... and on and on and on.

I used to love watching TV, hell, I admit I still enjoy it, but when I really think about it though I believe we can all be more constructive and creative and do more exciting and interesting things in our lives in the time that we normally watch TV. This isn't to say that there aren't ever times to relax. We all need a break sometimes.... and if your kid is screaming and you know the ONLY thing that is going to help calm them is TV, then of course it's alright.... it's alright even if it's not just to calm them, but to have them watch something now and then. My point is that the amount that kids today watch per week is astounding!

And to be honest, a lot of television out there is shit anyways. When I did watch TV there was a lot I watched that I didn't even really like.

So, to get to the point I came across this article today on Digg.com, read here. and I thought it was really interesting. It outlines how TV watching for children age two and under can really delay developmental skills. It also outlines the statistics on how much television in hours per week that children watch.... and it's a pretty frightening statistic.

I suggest you try putting away your TV for a month.... see what happens. Maybe you won't want to get it back out and if you do want to get it back out.... it better only be to watch 'The Office'. Now that show.... it kicks ass and you better believe I'll be watching it.

ART Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp

I bought one. Even though it is a really basic and cheap mic pre, it will be WAY better than the built-in pre's on the MR8-HD. I've read that if you replace the stock tube it will make it even better, however I highly doubt that makes much of a difference... because I've also read the tube isn't used to full potential - it's more of an appeal thing to say it's a tube pre. It's funny because there is a Behringer mic pre that has several internal yellow LEDs that surround the tube so every time you turn it out they fade in and on giving the appearance that the tube has "come alive". Wow... talk about shady.

Either way I'm hoping it will be on its way soon, it was back ordered.
