David Story is an up-and-coming singer/songwriter whose sound and style is a musical journey towards a destination unknown, though he's just happy to be along for the ride.
A native son of the Midwest, David Story was born in the land of cool: Fairmount, Indiana--home of James Dean. Since his early days in the sleepy Indiana town, his musical journey has taken him all over the continental US. A gifted lyricist, David says his inspiration to write comes from the world around him, particularly his extensive travels. "If you were to heap all of my songs into one pile," Story says, "I think the reigning theme would be that I'm just looking for a travel companion."
Drawing strongly from contemporary acoustic stylings of artists like John Mayer, Nickel Creek, and Caedmon's Call, Story released his first album independently in September 2007, entitled The Hinterland. Acoustic rhythm accents bucolic rhyme, making The Hinterland a winding journey back home to small town America.
Like Fairmount's favorite son, Story has stayed close to his hometown roots. "The town I grew up in really seems unaffected by the outside world." Amid the noise of everyday life, The Hinterland was a response to the duties and deadlines of a fast paced world. Says Story, "I wanted The Hinterland to be a musical haven of sorts. Something people can listen to and feel at ease. To me, that's what the hinterland is--a place where the soul can breathe."
Story followed The Hinterland with a strong sophomore effort, Things Fall Apart, where he expanded his laid-back acoustic feel towards an edgier alt rock sound. Influence from major British rock groups like U2, Coldplay, and Radiohead can all be heard throughout the album as Story proved that his music could pack a punch.
From the piano driven "Remember Yesterday", to the ambient "Conceive", to the conceptual "Jump The Gun", Things Fall Apart found Story moving away from the carefree living of the hinterland and journeying towards a more dynamic, higher-energy sound. And, to be sure, a journey away from the quiet confines of home.
"If The Hinterland was the highway home, then Things Fall Apart is the road out of the hinterland and into the 'real' world," reflects Story. "Once you leave that haven, although you can still go back, there's a part of you that's been forever changed by what you've seen and experienced. And so in that sense, home as you know it is never really the same." Referencing one of his songs, he says, "It's a matter of contrast, and you don't really appreciate the light until you've walked through the dark."
As a songwriter, David delivers a unique blend of creative melodies and honest lyrics. "I think it is usually the things in life that are most important to me that find their way into my songs." With tongue firmly in cheek, he states, "There's a story behind every song."
Looking ahead to what's next, David is seeking to explore the deeper realms of music and poetry. "For the first time in my very short career, I am finally delving into music theory," he says. "And I am paying more attention to the messages my songs convey. I've been listening to the great singer/songwriters, past and present. Mainly Paul Simon and Bob Dylan. I have been studying their lyrical methods--how they convey their message to the listener."
Whether he's performing in coffeeshops, or writing songs in the solitude of his bedroom, David's ultimate goal is to get his music to more people. "I'm hoping to tour extensively in 2009, and to gain as many new fans as possible. I'm not after fame for fame's sake. And I'm certainly not in this for the money. I sing because it is what God has made me to do. I just want to make the most out of what He has given me, and to share my gift with as many people as I can."
