After six years of performing in barbershop quartets, Derrek Wayne has developed into a vocalist with the skill to lead an audience of thousands. His vocal ability can be matched by few in the indie rock world.
He is also a talented songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Wayne recorded his first album on a four track tape machine, and played every instrument. The material on his debut ranges from country waltz, pop rock, finger picked acoustic guitar, free jazz, broadway standard and an adaptation of Sammy Davis Jr's version of the folk standard Frankie & Johnny.
After this release, Wayne moved to Portland Oregon where he met Alan Singley, an excellent pop songwriter in the tradition of Burt Bacharach. The two are a natural pair, and despite the indie rock saturation of their town, what they really love is 1960s orchestral pop.
Derrek Wayne's second release is entitled Down On The Yard. The tone of the album is a synthesis of Wayne's pop smarts and the underground digital ragas of Cameron Cope. Listen to it in hifi at derrekwayne.com/doty/
