"The man who clings to certitudes, to the comfort of the familiar, to the seemingly predictable, is not a man of faith. If everything is sure and certain, there is no need of faith. Certitude permits passivity and immobility but faith demands doing and acting , and action involves risk.
To laugh is to risk appearing the fool. To weep is to risk appearing sentimental. To reach out for another is to risk exposing your true self. To place your ideas your dreams before a crowd is to risk their loss. To love is to risk not being loved in return. to live is to risk dying, to hope is to risk despair. To try at all is to risk failure.
But risk we must. Because the greatest hazard to life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing does nothing, , has nothing , is nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow , but simply cannot learn, feel change, grow, love... live. Chained by his certitudes, as a slave: he has forfeited freedom. Only the person who risks can be called a free man. And only a free man can be called... a child of God."
