With the launch of Final Fantasy 13 in Japan yesterday (from publisher Square Enix) Sony has entered a crucial period that will seal the PS3's fate.

Final Fantasy is one of Japan's most popular games and in the domestic market number 13 will only be available on PS3. Analysts think that 500,000 Japanese households may buy a Sony console just to play it. The PS3 has lagged well behind Nintendo's Wii and Sony urgently needs to sell more consoles if it is to profit from subsequent software sales.

SCEA's head of PlayStation marketing John Koller told GamePro in a recent interview "We have a very firm stance – we're going to continue to support the PS2 wholeheartedly." With a lot of multi-platform titles still getting releases on the PS2 and also exclusives like Persona 4 still making money for the console it's great that they will continue to support the system in 2010.

"Online gaming on consoles may be popular now, but it wasn't always this way. Systems like the Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, and the original Xbox attempted to bring online gaming to the masses, however, they did so with decent success. The Xbox almost made it happen, especially with heavy-hitting releases like Halo 2 that persuaded gamers to invest in the LIVE service. It wasn't until the launch of the Xbox 360 that gaming online really started taking off. Nowadays, whenever you purchase a new game, there's a huge chance that it features a mode allowing you to play with or against real people (Army of Two - perfect example of teamwork in gaming). Of course, there are still many titles available that don't let players interact with others across the globe. Normally, this is due to many factors, like meeting a deadline or not having enough manpower.
