datkan

Hrm. I already have a Myspace which is far busier right now, but I quite liked the look of this VIRB thing, with it's snazzy web2.0 looks and the whole encouraging users to use CSS thing.

Anway. My name is Datkan, which is a Chinese name if you haven't already guessed, though the spelling is a really crappy approximation. You may be thinking right now, what insane and cruel parents would give their child a name like Datkan, but I really rather like my parents. Now with that exotic name you would probably expect me to live somewhere nice lie Hong Kong, but I live in Coventry. Coventry is the 9th biggest city in the UK, and I also wouldn't doubt it if it was the 9th most poo.

In my spare time I'm a bit of a geek, especially with Adobe After Effects and Photoshop. Whenever I do something I have to do it right, so I obsess about it for hours and hours, reading magazines, surfing the net, checking every detail. Nerding out can get a bit tiring, so I also skate, which is how I got introduced to half this crap anyway. The route kinda went:
skater-->hypebeast-->video nerd-->present day.

Someday I hope to make a living from being a cool nerd. Someday is hopefully after I've been to a nice university and moved away from Coventry.

Well... A Lot Has Happened Recently

Not that I'm very good at remembering what's happened. But pretty much a transatlantic trip took place, and me, my ma and my bruddha ventured to New York, and hung out with my cousin for a while. Some shopping took place and a lot of cultural activities took place. Oh, and eating. Eating is not a problem in New York even on a tight budget, Chinatown is the place to be, near enough to SoHo and Nolita for all the cool stuff, and the food. Had some awesome Shanghainese dumplings at a joint my cousin showed us.

Here's a quick skimmable list of stuff I bought in NY

Dior jeans, 37 inch inseam yo.
AA bag
AA cardi
Uniqlo shirts
DVDs
aNYthing stuff
Underwear... yes I travel all that way and buy underpants.

Museums we hit up is pretty numerous, several commercial places and mostly public.

First two days we stayed at the Chambers hotel, really nice place, sort of inhabited by rich hipsters, not a bad thing I guess. If you're around that area of 5th av, go to the hotel, it's the place with the funny doors, and go to the Town restaurant. Decor was incredible and the food matched.

Rest of the time was spent at my cousins apt, where he has one of the world's cutest dogs with a rather chavvy name: Chelsea. She did like barking quite a lot, but still cuteee. I'll upload some pictures somewhere.

Well it's been a while hasn't it.

A fair while since I touched this. Since I last touched this blog I have realised several things such as my life really isn't that interesting even when I am on holiday, because other people have to do such frivolous activities as working. Which is why for the most part of this day I myself will be working on random web projects.

Things wot I have done recently:

Recently I picked up a copy of Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle, a really really good book, and I highly recommend you pick up a copy yourself. Yes... I know it's possibly in the science fiction section in your local bookstore, so you may have to trawl knee deep in nerds to get to it, still worth it. And nowadays we have such a thing as the internet. In fact you're on it right now. One word. AMAZON.

Right, other things I have done recently.

Well on the Saturday just gone past I went to Birmingham with Amy and Abi. The trains were handily down so it took me a fair while to get into Birmingham, but it was no biggie. Once there we decided the best course of action was to go to the Birmingham Museum and make me dress up as a maid. Lovely. This is one look I don't think I'll be able to pull off for a while.

That's me in the corner

Of course, they had lots and lots of fun sniggering at me. But I think I had the last laugh. I don't know how, but I just think I do. Probably something to do with my just plain superiority. Anyway once we'd had all our fun dressing up it was off to the beach. Now.. I have photos at the beach, but I'm not all that keen on them. You'll have to wait to see them. Beaching helped us get ready for a short shopping sprint, where we decided that Topshop was really rather crummy. And then it was time to go home. So I waited at Moor St with them for their train, of course because they're numb nuts they caught the wrong train and had to come all the way back to Birmingham to catch the right train, but that's a story they can tell you.

And here's a photo of me at Moor St

Oh, there's a new episode of Epicly Later'd up with Tim O'Connor in it. It is pretty awesome, and he takes the piss out of Jamie Thomas, which isn't all that difficult but still is funny. Watch it here

Today I was supposedly going to be seeing Hawwy Potter, but we pulled out 'cus Amy has some induction day. Hrm. See, you know when your life is boring when you start writing about stuff you are supposedly gonna do.

Oh and last night I went skating with the homeslices at Balsall Common skatepark. It was alright and I was stupidly hyperactive. Man of the day goes to Chris for his spectacular slam. When you give a skater a trolley of course he's gonna think of something stupid to do with it. Chris decided that his particular stupid thing would be a hippy jump. Now I've never ever seen Chris even jump as high as a trolley of his board, let alone on it. So when he rolled up to this hippy jump at a nice pace the results were quite spectacular. We were still picking up bits of Chris 10 minutes later. My only regret is that I didn't have a camera to capture this moment, but I'm still laughing over the mental image now so it's all good.

Oooo.... very fancy... new jukebox. Meh. Anyway. Work experience is over and there's still bits of administration to do for school but I guess summer holidays are basically here. God I hope the reality is as good as the hype. Today was fun if a little mundane. Went to Epic today and the place was bloody deserted. Only a couple of skaters there which meant that it was quite relaxed. Could piss about doing no comply shit and what not. Got back on the train at around 10-10:30 and cruised it home. Always fun. More people should skate from A to B rather than just sticking at spots. Tomorrow... last in the series for Doctor Who! Excited as a kid who's just been told that Father Christmas is actually real, and that people who say that he is not real are retards and should be podged.

Ah... finally. My poor little brain can rest and focus on pointless stuff. Finished the exams on Friday, with French which wasn't the most fun exam ever, especially straight after Physics. Anyway enough of exams. They're over, and that's that until results day.

Friday night was spent getting home and relaxing on the macbook. MSN and the whatnot.

Then Saturday arrived putting an end to a really rather rubbish Friday. At 10am I had a piano theory exam which was a bit meh. If I fail, I fail. No biggie. Then it was a rush home to pack for Leamington festival. A couple of items in hand I choo chooed off to said destination meeting Abi on the way. We got to Leamington at around 3:30, or at least that's what my brain's telling me now and found Rosie's house/ soon to be ex-house without making any telephone calls and with only the help of a tiny scrap of paper. Picked up DJ Mehdi - Lucky Boy (at night). This record gets a Datkan 3.5/5. Great for casual listening but few tracks REALLY stand out. Eventually we actually got to the Peace Festival which was a huge let down. With not a lot of other options we ended up eating Haribo on the trampoline and Abi CHEATED to get the last Haribo in the most intense game of Break The Egg I have ever played. I didn't really get a lot of sleep that night due to being an incessant chatterbox.

Now onto Sunday. Woke up, made some really good pancakes / everyone else made really good pancakes for me. Headed out to Leamington station... clambered onto a packed train to Coventry. Got home. Got redressed. Went out for disappointing family meal. Chilled with family. Went to skatepark, Chris and James were down there, and I decided it would be fun to do the most retarded tricks possible. I had fun.. other's didn't. Then chilled with fam again, watching TV and shizz nizz. Now on here typing this up.

Hopefully I'll be able to commit to keeping this one up. I'm not going to limit it to any one thing such as music or skateboarding this time, which should mean that I'll have enough material to post often enough to keep you entertained. Maybe I'll drag in a couple of other contributors.

It struck my mind today how awesome it would be to have a little zine or something. I've had a little pipedream called Biro Spiral, but it's never really taken off. I guess you need some kind of scene to make a zine around. No such thing in Coventry really. Maybe one day I'll actually get off my arse and make some material.

I tried going to that gallery in the Custard Factory today, unfortunately for me they were filming something there so I had to kinda just shuffle round pretty quickly. Was hoping to buy a sweatshirt but didn't get anything. Anybody fancy coming with me another day?

I love Chinese food

Food rules. Just had two bowls of fried rice with curry sauce, sometimes I hate being Chinese, but when there's good food about I usually like it haha. Being Japanese wouldn't be too bad either... (I'm not supposed to say that because some people still get pissed off about the rape of Nanjing). Instant Ramen is enough to live off! Shame the guy who invented it died before I could thank him in person. If you want to get on my good side buy me a packet of Tonkotsu Instant Ramen. mmm....

On a very different tangent.. Twee rocks my socks. I also need a tee with Twee as Fuck on it. Oof. attitude. Best thing about twee is that it instantly repulses non-happy people. Second best thing is that twee can become a point of conversation for two strangers, so easy to click with other twee people. Just like skateboarding and medium format cameras hehe.

Night people

Kings Norton park is badass. Craziest quarter in the world there, layback boardslides so far, smiths, stand up grinds, 50-50s round the curve. Awesomeness. Funbox ain't to bad either, deffo gonna go there again. The real standout thing there though is the floor. Why can't all skateparks have a gorgeous floor like that. Was good to meet some new people. Gonna be good this summer, get the BBQ out!

On another note, what have you got for my birthday? If you haven't got anything I hear that Tescos is open 24-7...

Night

Hrmm seems like noone was particularly bothered about my birthday... I'll play it cool for now, and I'll get that Dior trench off eBay. Not a lot going on right now so there's not a lot to blog about. Same old same old... wake up... go to school... go home... avoid doing work for as long as possible... eat... do work... fall asleep... wake up... I hate routine. It's just boring. Can't wait for the summer and all this crap is out of the way. TRUCK TEN... need to go to that. Oh and Blood Arm in the nearer future.
