I have released music for a handful of independent electronic labels under my own name, but this is only part of what I do as a musician. This profile will be dedicated to the more abstract zither and noise music I make, which is generally completely improvised and recorded live.
For several years now I have been playing electric guitar laid flat on a table with various metal implements, the recordings of which find their way into my dancefloor beat tracks. As well as using them for this purpose I also enjoy improvising, looping little sounds made by hitting different parts of the guitar body, strings and pickups, and being fed through various effects. In autumn 2007 I built a special instrument for this, after about 2 years of planning and buying parts. Pictures can be found below.
Whereas before I removed frets from normal electric guitars and cut away unnecessary body parts, this one was designed as a fretless baritone zither, with a hand made string damper to keep open string noise to a minimum, and as well as 2 normal neck and bridge position humbucker pickups, a single-coil style humbucker is housed in the fretboard by the nut. This picks up the other side of the strings which are resonated by the way I play with a serrated metal bar, and results in some interesting effects.
