I'm Knitting Flowers

There is something about the cold lately that made me get out my knitting needles and start stitching up a small mountain of cozy, yarn-y creations! I knit several of these flowers that I'll probably end up making a pin out of, or sewing them on something. You could also make up a bunch of these and create a pretty garland!

They are super easy to make. Here is the pattern:

I used a US size #8 needle.
Cast on 8 stitches.
Row 1: slip 1 purlwise, knit 7
Row 2: slip 1 knitwise, knit 5 (2 sts remain on left needle), turn and put yarn to the back.
Row 3: slip 1 knitwise, knit 3 (2 sts remain on left needle), turn and put yarn to the back.
Row 4: slip 1 knitwise, knit 3, turn.
Row 5: slip 1 knitwise, knit 5 (0 sts remain on left needle), turn.
Row 6: slip 1 knitwise, knit 6 (leaving 1 st on left needle), turn.
Row 7: slip 1 knitwise and begin casting off until 1 st remains, turn.
Cast on 7 stitches. Repeat 5 times to create 6 petals.
Cast off last sts leaving a long tail. Thread yarn on a wool sewing needle and weave sewing needle in and out of each petal along inside edge of hold and gently pull yarn together, closing hole.

Engraved Dish from India

Not only was last week my husbands birthday, but it was also the 6 year anniversary of when we first started dating. Sentimental, I know. Being the wonderful guy he is, he got me this beautiful engraved metal dish made in India.

I'm normally a fan of anything from India, but this seems even more special looking because of the black coating on the inside of the bowl. It makes a precious little dish for catching jewelry or nick knacks. I love it!

Birthday Celebration

Last week was my husbands birthday and we celebrated by going out to dinner. The result of that dinner was one entire week of the worst case of food poisoning I ever want to have. It was awful! I was pretty much decommissioned, thus my lack of blogging. I'm better now though!

I did want to show the presentation for his birthday gift. I took some extra special time and care to make it look nice. The theme was green and brown. Both wrapping papers are vintage and from estate sales. The ribbon is faux bois from the Martha Stewart craft line. I created the circle tag with my new circle cutter, also from the MS craft line. It was fun to put together, and he loved it too.

Beauty of Quilling

Among the many styles of paper crafts, quilling is some what of a rare art form. Quilling, or paper filigree as it is sometimes called, is the art of creating intricate shapes from strips of paper. The technique is simple: After a long, narrow ribbon of paper is rolled around a needle like tool, the strip is slipped off, arranged with your fingertips into the desired shape, and then glued to a background of contrasting paper, fabric, or wood.

Here are some beautiful examples from left to right:

Christmas Decor

My Christmas decor is a collection that I add to each year. Over the course of 2008, I've picked up lots of vintage ornaments of all shapes and sizes. I can only put so many in glass vases for display, so I decided to make a little "tree" to hang them on. I picked up this gnarly looking branch at an estate sale (yes, I bought a branch) and I painted it white. I'm sure you can find one on your own for free in your own backyard. Then I just hung some ornaments on the branches and put the rest in a pool at the bottom. The colorful baubles look pretty, if not a little whimsical. My husband said it reminded him of Dr. Seuss. What do you think?

After a month long hiatus, I'm finally back! My son was born in October and I've been focusing on being a parent for a little while. With such a long reprieve, I'm itching to get crafty again. And with the holiday season upon us, what better time! Here are some of my favorite Christmas crafts this year.
