I like stuff. I don't care for what's "in" or any fads unless of course, I like it cos I like it. Not cos its the thing to do. I like to think of myself as a non-conformist, but I have to admit, I do conform. Its not because "they" say I have to, but somehow I stumble upon something and just I do it. After all these years of existence, I can honestly say that I have yet to sell out. I do what feels right for me.
I think that hardcore non-conformist, never gonna give in, its this until I die... well, I think those people are just afraid of reality and this natural process that we all know as growing up. We live, we experience, we learn, we know. But yet, we never know it all. ok, enough of my rambling.

basics: I'm a mom, a partner, an aunt, a sister and a friend. a female.

I saw, I conquered. Its a hat.

Sometimes I look at an item and think, "pshaw, anyone can do that" but other times I just look away as if I have no interest. the majority of those times, I secretly wish I could make that whatever it is. I've always wanted to try making a hat, but for some strange reason I thought they looked too complicated. So I just accepted that I would never make a hat... besides my head is too huge to put one on it.

So anyway, I came across an upcycling tutorial that uses an old sweater to make two winter hats. I looked at it and thought it looked easy enough. I could get a knitted hat without actually having to know how to knit. sweet.

So, being that I live in Houston where it hardly ever gets colder than the 50s, I don't own too many sweaters. I learned of this tutorial on Tuesday. Its been cold here this week... like in the freezing temps cold. so that means I'm wearing all the sweaters I own, this week. So I really couldn't cut into one of my existing sweaters - no matter how ugly and worn they may be.

I ended up taking a trip to one of the many thrift stores in my neighborhood. Luckily for me on the day that I went, they had a half off sale on pink tagged items. I found a decent but really ugly sweater marked at $2.30. I hate that I didn't take a pic of the sweater in all its ugliness. It was the type that had knitted flowers on top of appliqued leaves with a cow like pattern on the front. One sleeve was black and one was white. The back of the sweater was plain white. I used that for my hat. oh, heehee the sweater even had :gasp: shoulder pads!!!! WTF?! hahaha

I wasn't able to follow the tutorial to the letter. I was lazy. I'm always lazy.
I tried to access the tutorial via my cell phone. I can get to the link, but the pictures don't come up. So I had a stab at it by trying to remember what I saw earlier in the day. (no, I don't read patterns. I too lazy to follow directions and I have this thing about breaking rules. :) )

I'm not much of a perfect circle cutter type of person. After I sliced off the sleeves and the collar and band, I folded the back fabric and cut what I thought was a good enough circle (it looked more like a rounded square). Then I went a sewing away. I ended up with an *ok* funky but not cute hat. I wore it.

I conquered the hat and wanted to do something else with the left over fabric. So I made a doggie sweater for our sweet little rat terrier we call, Girl. I used the sleeves of the sweater for this idea. Luckily, Girl is teeny-tiny and fit the sleeve perfectly. The black one is kinda sorta a camouflage sweater. Other than the red strip of fleece at the bottom, it blends well with the color of her fur.

Yes, she's not happy wearing it, but it DOES keep her warm so she's dealing.
And no I'm not taking orders... :P

Its been a while...

A very long while.

I'm going to blame it on Ike. yeah. Ike. Its all his fault.

anyway, I've been a sewing fool lately. woowoo.
I even had a hand in influencing two others to start sewing also. A nine year old and an older old. and that makes me happy.

I got really into making tea wallets.
Tea Wallets? wha??
Yeah, thats what I said.

Well, what happened was...
Ya know? Sometimes I get really bored (zero motivation, zero inspiration, whatever) and I read forum threads that I normally wouldn't read when I actually want to read a forum. So, yeah. I was very unmotivated one day... scanning the threads on Swap-bot, I come across someone wanting a tea wallet... hmmm... tea wallet... interesting... I read the thread. Saw some photos and thought to myself... hey, that looks easy enough... I think I'll try it. So I did.

I used my coworker, Angela as my guinea pig (she's always saying she likes my stuff, so hah! she's stuck with it!). Anyway, I used this really adorable fabric that I got a Joann's. I had been eyeing it for a while, but I didn't want to pay full price. Then one day, like magic, it was HALF price! heaven.

And some others

Cute, huh?
well I think so. that's all that really matters. :P

So since I am all excited about these quick and easy wallets, I went ahead and tried my hand at creating a tutorial. I even busted out my illustrator skillz. check it.

Tea Wallet A quick and simple gift.

When reading this *tutorial* please keep in mind that I have had no formal sewing lessons nor do I know what all the terms are called. I just got a wild hair one day in the Fall of 2007 and bought a sewing machine. I've been having fun since. All I want to do is sew and craft. So with that, let's make a tea wallet!

Look through your fabric stash (who doesn't have one?) and pull out some cute fabric. I like cute, but you can use whatever you want.

Iron it to make it smooth... oh so smooth. Then, cut out two rectangles about 10" x 4" and one at about 2 1/2" X 10".

On the smaller piece, fold over 1/4" at the top and press to make a nice fold. (see, term... I have no idea) Stitch across the length of the piece over the fold. This will be your pocket panel.

Now get what will be your inside panel and pin the pocket panel to it. Grab the outside panel and face both panels to each other. Pin.

Now stitch a quarter-inch seam around three sides, leaving one short side open.
OK, now turn it inside out. Press it with the iron to make it look all smooth and pretty.

On the open side, fold in so you get two nice edges. Now press it so that its all smooth and stuff. Don't stitch it just yet. Whew!

Measure what would be a third of the wallet then stitch.. two stitches and you'll have three pockets. now that you have your nice and pretty pockets. Now let's decide on how you want to secure the wallet...

you can sew, glue, fuse a ribbon on the outside of the middle pocket. then tie a cute bow

you can sew in some Velcro.

add a fabric loop thing and sew on a button

use a snap button

You can pretty much do whatever you want. Just keep in mind that it is easier to pack the wallet if it is secure somehow.

Now once you've decided how you're going to secure it (or not) you can stitch the open side (add your loop at this point if you're going to do that).

Voila! Now you have a tea wallet.

once I figure out how to add the pdf, I'll include that as well. (yeah, i have a pdf. woowoo. I'm a bigshot wannabe)

Burning the Midnight Oil?

I should re-name this blog something like Midnight Craft Fool or something. Its like I don't get started with my crafting until dinner is made, dishes are washed, kitchen is cleaned, emails are read, kid is asleep... it is usually after 10 before I can get some me time to craft. I do it for a few hours and get in bed between 1 and 2AM.

I like to watch the local Fox station when I'm crafting. Here's the line-up:

10:00 PM TMZ - not really into celebrity stalking, but it could be funny at times. I think that blond dude is, well, he's just different.

10:30 PM King of the Hill - I wanna marry Hank Hill. Peggy is one lucky woman. :P

11:00 PM - Midnight Two episodes of That 70's Show - I don't know what it is, but I can watch that over and over. My only wish is that they would show the episodes in order. In the first one last night, Kelso and Donna ran away to California. Donna needed to get away after being left at the alter by Eric and Jackie minced Kelso's words and agreed to marry him.
Then the second episode, Donna is back with blonde hair and dating Kelso's brother, Casey and Jackie and Hyde are a couple.

Midnight - 1:00 AM 2 episodes of Scrubs - I had never watched this show until it started airing on Fox in syndication. I can't believe I never watched it.

So that's what keeps me company while I'm burning the midnight oil with my crafts.

Here are some of my latest projects:

It is a Breast Cancer Awareness Dotee. I made this for a swapper who was flaked on. I hope she likes it. I really think she's cute.

This one is for a Winner Take All Dotee Game. Its part of a group that I am in on Swapbot. (I think she's cute too)

I have been so into making zipper pouches. This one started out pretty big. I messed it up so I tore it apart, cut out the mess up parts and started over. Its about 2" x 2.5" and yes, I think its cute. I sent this to someone who says she likes pink. I really hope she does.

For a digital art post card swap I did this:

I had to include my name on the card. So since I'm in love with @gnomad I added him to my card. But if you look at his eyes, you'll notice they are not his. :) They are mine. Its a lot freaky looking but I think its cool.

I know y'all have been wondering what I've been up to...
So here ya go...

I don't have photos of them all, but I finally finished all of the summer dresses I was making for the little girls, my sis and gran. Woooo... I made eleven dresses total and one blouse using the mock smock material stuff.
Here's one of the first ones. Since I've learned to make straps.

I finally figured out how to make a zipper pouch. This was one of the hardest things to do.
They even zip and don't catch! These are my 5th and 6th try.
Be proud of me.
The Roaming Gnome - An idea

A few days ago @ darkGracie gave me an idea.

I don't exactly remember what she said and I cannot locate the update. At the time I was just browsing Twitter on my phone. I wasn't involved in a conversation with anyone. But she said something along the lines of twitter and a roaming gnome....

--lightbulb!--

If you know me you know I love gnomes. I have quite a few just sitting here on my desk at work and they're all over my house. So anyway, I thought since I have one to spare, I could start this roaming gnome project.

I hope enough tweeps join in.

The gnome I am choosing is about 5 inches tall. I chose him because he is small and postage wouldn't be so bad.

Once I get the word out (and enough people wanna play), we'll set some guidelines. Two things that will be a must, first, is that you take a photo of it either with you or somehow indicating where you're located and second, that you send it on to the next tweep.

I'll also start a blog and whoever has the little guy can write a post about the guy's visit. Add your photo, etc. And of course, we'll start a flickr group. :)

So if you're interested in playing and/or helping me organize this, let me know!

My Pets - Digital Photo Swap

Note:
This is a dual purpose post. One because I need to start blogging again and secondly because I need to fulfill a swap on swapbot.

I haven't been much of a pet owner. We didn't grow up having a dog or a cat around. Well, I take that back.
We did have a huge Irish Setter named Rufus or maybe it was Cherry - gosh I can't remember - my dad had one at his house and we had one at ours... I forget who went where...anyway, when I was about 5-7 years old. My cousin and I would try to ride it like a horse, but she'd buck and we'd fall off. One day, we were on the porch and my cousin tried to ride her again... well she ended up busting her head on the brick pillars on our porch. blood everywhere. After that we didn't treat the dog like a horse.

So after that I didn't have a pet for a long time. I believe I was already out of high school (or it could have been my last year). I found a dog wandering the street so I decided to take him home. I named him PuppyLove. I had PuppyLove for a few months. He ran away three times. The last time he left, he didn't leave a note or anything like that, but I figured since he didn't want to be my PuppyLove so I just let him be. I hope he found a happy home. Obviously mine wasn't.

Oh wait, I do remember having another puppy that a boy from the next street gave me. It was on Valentine's Day. If I remember the boy's name correctly it was Chris. (he was crazy about me and I was like ughhh... a boy! heehee) I was probably about 8 or 9 at the time. Well, my mom didn't want the pup in the house, so I put him in the garage. We lived in a wood house and had a detached garage. The garage had no insulation. Valentine's Day, Winter, Garage, No insulation... can ya get where I'm going with this?? No? Okay... I'll tell ya... the poor thing froze. not a happy story. No wonder I'm not much of a pet owner...

Ok, now come back to 2006. My son, in the fifth grade, wants a pet. I say "No!" I mean, c'mon, I've had bad luck with pets...

Well, my son doesn't listen to me.

He brought home the cutest little doxie mix. OHMAHGAH I fell in love with her...

The dog had been found wandering on the school grounds for a couple of days. My son got attatched to her so the principal called me to ask if Damon could take it home. I said, sure. It was lost. My plan was to find this dog's rightful owner.

I put out flyers and gave it a week... but by that time I had already fallen in love. Thank goodness no one claimed her. She was ours and we named her Coco. Well earlier this year we moved into an apartment. Which meant no yard and no more wood floors. I also had gotten really busy with other life stuff and didn't have the time to care for her, take her on walks, play with her... and since I was the only one that acted like I had a pet (the luster had worn off for my son and Barry wasn't into her as he had been...) so I had to give her away. But I was not about to take her to the SPCA... or any dog killing factory... oh no. (I think I've contributed more than enough to doggie heaven) So I sent out an email (a long one at that) to find a good home. I had so many requests for her it was kinda cool. But I ended up giving her to a friend of mine who I knew would take good care of her. We still keep in touch.

So here are pictures of Coco. You can also check out her Dogster page. Its like a myspace for doggies.

Coco

Well, I thought I was done with pets. Until a few months ago when my son brought home a kitten. grrrr....
again, the luster has worn off but this time I'm not having any of that crap where I have to do everything for it. I will buy her food and litter... BUT I DO NOT FEED HER OR CLEAN HER BOX!!! Damon and Barry do it. Damon doesn't really want her anymore, but Barry isn't about to let me give away another pet. So I'm stuck with another pet (for now).

She's really cute and at times can be fun... but I've never been a cat person. I don't like cats. well except for Garfield. I love Garfield... but he's in either paper or plastic form. I can deal with that. I think this cat knows I don't like her so she makes it a point to only be near me. To follow me where ever I go...
GOSH! it is so annoying! but I do love her. I guess.

KittyKitty

I play Scrabulous (Scrabble) on Facebook, and this damn cat thinks she can play too.

Swap-Bot Photo Scavenger Hunt

I haven't talked about Swap-bot on this blog... I will one day. For now just a brief...

Swap-bot is a really addicting site where I get to go buy crafting stuff and actually use the stuff on a project!!! Well its just a place where you swap with other people... You'll join a swap and you either buy or create something and send it to your partner. I like to be creative so I join the swaps that let me make stuff.

I was led to Swap-bot by my wonderful tweeps, Twitter Knitters. A group of knitters who tweet on Twitter.(follow me if you are not already, I'll do the same) Well the lovely ladies decided it would be fun to have a swap and the rest is history....

I'll write more about swap-bot later, but the reason I wanted to brief you on it is because I joined a fairly easy swap where I get to go on a photo scavenger hunt. Of course its from my own stuff, but still.

In the rules, we were given the option to email the photos or put them in our blog... Ten bucks you can guess what I chose. (where's my $10?!)

Before we go on to my finds, I want to apologize to my fellow swap partners.
I am using photos that have already been taken and are on my flickr or photobucket pages.
I will also use PhotoShop to crop any of the photos that need cropping... So, in advance, I apologize if these are not what you wanted. :(

Photo Scavenger Hunt List

1. Something Red
2. Food
3. Child
4. Nature
5. Animal
6. Coffee/Tea

First I'll start off with Red

These are the pom poms that I made for the Wool Pom-pom Swap. They went on their way somewhere across the big pond.
hmmmm, wonder if they made it yet....I haven't heard. wonder if they got caught up in customs...

Second we have, Food.
I really like to cook. I really like to make easy stuff. And I usually just go by trial and error when cooking... my family doesn't complain especially when I come up with stuff like this...
So on this day I wanted to make enchiladas but I didn't have all the ingredients. I didn't have any sauce. So I improvised and came up with a sorta chicken quesadilla or maybe a chicken and corn tortilla cheesy pizza. LOL- If I were Rachel Ray, I'd have named it that. she's so cheesy just like me. hehheh

For my child photo, I introduce you my niece Mallory.
Her sisters and I were hanging out at my aunt's house when we found a pair of purple goggles. One camera plus silly girls equals a mega dose of goofiness... we kinda went wild. And had lots of fun.
Mallory knew how to work it as you can see in this picture.
Work it, girl!

So now we've got Nature.
This is my niece Marina. She lives in Northern California with her hippie parents. They went camping and her mom and dad decided she should be at one with nature. :) That's dirt you see all over her body... Now I don't mind her to be a little nudist, but I'm not about to show the world anything it doesn't need to see. Since I wanted to share my nieces pictures, I decided to put a cover up on her. I was going for the Eve look (as in Adam and Eve)... I think I got it.
She's cute, huh? well I think so. She's my Marina!

So that leaves us with Coffee/tea.
Folks, please meet my Mr. Coffee Iced Tea Pot. I use it daily. I'm not into hot tea or even flavored teas. For me its good ol' regular tea but with ice.
